Zaynab Bilyamin, a 24-year-old student at Federal University Dutse, has converted sachet water waste into kerosene and diesel.
Ms Bilyamin who is a student of the Department of Chemistry worked on the conversion as her undergraduate final year project.
Her project topic is: “Conversion of Low-Density Polyethylene and Mixed Low-Density Polyethylene with Polyethylene Terephthalate into Fuel.”

Ms Bilyamin stated that she was inspired to conduct the research after reading about the possibility of converting polymeric waste into fuel because in Nigeria, polymeric waste piles up on the street without recycling, posing an environmental risk, whereas this waste can be converted to wealth.
The young scientist appreciated the support from her parents and the project supervisor, Aminu Dauda, for their help in the course of carrying out the project work.
Speaking on the challenges encountered, she said, “I carried out the experiment in the lab, although it was okay. But during the experiment, an obnoxious odour which is not very pleasant to the nose was emitted. Had it been that there was a facility a little bit away from residential areas, it would have been so much better.”
She mentioned further how she had to take her product to Bayero University Kano (BUK) in Kano State for analysis as there was no equipment for such in her school.
“Had it been available in my school, then I would have carried out the physicochemical analysis myself in my school,” she said.
In the course of the research, Mr Dauda said they had to design and fabricate a machine (reactor) at the Kano Technology Incubation Centre which was used for the pyrolysis — the method used to convert the polymeric waste into fuel..
Ms Bilyamin, who hails from Jigawa State, said she would pursue a career in academia as she want to carry the research further in her Masters and PhD program.
She added that the research gulped more than N100,000 (about $150).
Ms Bilyamin and her supervisor therefore called on the government to invest in this area of research as it will ease the blockage caused by polymeric waste and at the same time serve as a source of revenue to the government and also means of reducing youth restiveness.

Fathia is the first chapter of the Qu’ran, and it is recited by Muslims in every obligatory five daily prayers.
According to the former Kogi State senator, the APC flagbearer is not a Muslim, but an emergency one who is trying to learn the basics of Islams only for political purposes.
Melaye, therefore, urged Nigerians to vote out Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming general election.
He wrote: “Fathia challenge: Dino defeated Tinubu in Quranic citation. Emilokan is not a Muslim but an emergency Muslim trying to learn the basics of Islam for political purposes. Vote him out.”
This has however generated mixed reactions, while many asked Tinubu to take up the challenge, others said that shows Tinubu isn’t a religious fanatic as feared by many that oppose the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Ade Akintunde said; “The only reliable information about EMILOKAN, is that he is a man, the rest are OLUWOLE.”
Micheal said; “Thank God that Dino has confirmed that Tinubu is not a fanatical Muslim as people are portraiting him to be and Dino’s assertion has made a mess of him criticizing the Muslim-Muslim ticket.”
Babatunde Samson said; “If he’s not a Muslim then what is he? His not a Muslim but goes to Mecca regularly? He bears Moslem names,if his not a muslim but he associate with Muslims more than d Christians,d Muslims will want to use him even if he’s half Muslim, they will use d principle of Taqiya for him, all I know is Apc will fall, PDP will scatter for Peter Obi to raise a new Nigeria where peace and justice shall reigns! O God of creation makes this noble course come to pass in Jesus’ mighty name.”

Bola Ahmed Tinubu of APC and Peter Obi of LP
Peter Obi stated this on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), as part of his nationwide campaign ahead of the February 25 presidential election.
“This country is sick and should not be handed over to a sick person. I am not saying that anyone is sick. We have been here for over two hours, we don’t want people who can’t stand for 30 minutes,” Obi said in an interactive session with the varsity’s Business School.

He identified character and trust as two cardinal attributes to look out for in the recruitment of leaders to pilot the affairs of the nation for the next four years.
“In the United States during elections, they go for debates. Somebody once asked Barack Obama questions that were personal and he answered. But here in Nigeria, somebody wants to contest elections, we don’t know his real age, we don’t know his name, we don’t know the schools he attended. Nobody knows his real identity and he is pushing to lead everybody.
“My name is Peter Obi. I can say I went to Christ The King College, went to University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Both the VC today, the DVC today, were my schoolmates. We came to university the same year and left the same year. The people I went to school with, I can see them here today, my seniors and my juniors. How come we now have people who do not have classmates? This is very important”
The former Anambra State governor, however, admitted that everybody can’t be educated equally or formally, but everybody’s records must be straight.
Afe Babalola once told me he never had the opportunity of going to a formal school. There is nothing wrong with that. There are so many people who have done well in life and never went to formal school.
On corruption, he said, “If you say you will fight corruption, let’s go to the road you have passed and see what is remaining there after you left,” stressing that “this year’s election must be based on competence as it requires physical and mental energy. It is not a retirement job.”
