Attack in Borno: Army General killed, Tinubu laments

The Defense Headquarters stated on Thursday that a concerted attack by insurgents on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State, resulted in the deaths of both terrorists and military personnel.

The military, however, did not confirm or debunk reports that the Commander of the 29 Brigade, Brig Gen Oseni Braimah, was among those killed in the incident. The Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, Zanna Ajimi, however, claimed that the brigade commander was among those killed in the attack.

“Yes, we just left the military base now, and I can confirm to you that the brigade commander is among the casualties,” Ajimi told the press.

Residents also reported that the insurgents attacked the base with sophisticated weapons, set combat vehicles ablaze, and burned shops near the military formation.

A resident, Musa Aji, said, “They didn’t just burn military vehicles; shops that are by the roadside were also set on fire. As of this time, we have yet to hear about the death of any civilian. But we heard soldiers were killed.” Efforts to reach the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt Col Sanni Uba, were unsuccessful as calls were not answered.

Maj Gen Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the incident began about 12:30 a.m. on April 9, 2026, when rebels attempted to breach the military installation’s defensive perimeter.

He said troops of Operation Hadin Kai, led by the Commander 29 Brigade, Brig Gen Oseni Braimah, responded with “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat.

“Continuing the Nigerian Armed Forces’ counter-terrorism efforts, troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade in Operation Hadin Kai came under a coordinated terrorist attack on their location at the Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State.

“However, the troops, led by the Commander 29 Brigade, Brig Gen Oseni Braimah, responded with exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower. “In a well-coordinated counteraction, the insurgents were decisively engaged and forced to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission,” the statement read.

The Defense Headquarters regarded the strike as a sign of desperation by insurgents who had suffered significant losses in recent operations, adding that the encounter resulted in the loss of some soldiers.

Unfortunately, the encounter resulted in the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

“The statement said, “The Chief of Defence Staff honors their heroism, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the defense of the nation.” The military also disclosed that clearance operations were ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping.

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu expressed his profound sorrow over the troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation Hadin Kai, who were killed in a well-planned terrorist attack on their camp in Benisheikh, Borno State.

He described the fallen troops as “unforgettable and irreplaceable” heroes. In a statement issued Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the courage of the soldiers who, he said, fought valiantly to prevent Boko Haram from overrunning the communities under their protection.

“I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers, led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country today in Borno State.

The President said, “The government will never forget their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will not be in vain.”

Tinubu framed the attack as an act of desperation by a weakened insurgency, saying the military had been conducting sustained land and air offensives that had neutralised many fighters and commanders.

He said, “From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense land and air offensives against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders.

“The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation.” The President urged the military high command and frontline troops not to be discouraged, promising continued government support in equipment and welfare. “Do not lose heart, do not be weary, do not be discouraged. Our officers and men should continue to serve with honour, courage, and patriotism.

He declared, “The government will always stand by the Armed Forces, provide more of the equipment needed, and ensure the welfare of all who risk their lives for our safety.”

Additionally, Tinubu urged Nigerians and the media to support the armed forces while warning against any actions that glorified or approved of assaults on soldiers.

“I urge Nigerians and the media to continue to support our military in their relentless battle against insurgency and banditry. “We should desist from celebrating or condoning the attacks against our troops. These soldiers are our heroes; unforgettable and irreplaceable,” He uttered those words.

The President expressed his sympathies to the government and people of Borno State, stressing the federal government’s commitment to collaborating with the state to achieve “total victory and lasting peace.”

Former President Obasanjo: “No One Will Fix Nigeria for Us Until We Unite.”

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has encouraged Nigerians to share accountability for the country’s advancement, warning that meaningful development will remain out of reach unless citizens unite to confront the country’s challenges.

Obasanjo made the announcement on Thursday during the Sixth Annual Colloquium held to mark the 65th birthday of Itua Ighodalo, founder of Trinity Church. The event, themed “The Future of Nigeria,” featured discussions on the country’s path forward.

On behalf of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute, Prof. Adedeji Daramola, the former president stressed that nation-building is a shared duty that cuts across all sectors of society.
He warned against expecting sudden miracles without deliberate action, saying every Nigerian, from market women to professionals and political leaders, must play a role in shaping the nation’s direction.

Obasanjo said, “Nobody will fix Nigeria for us until we come together to work and fix it,” adding that while leadership is vital, true progress depends on collective participation and accountability.
He also highlighted the importance of involving young people in governance and national development, describing them as the backbone of Nigeria’s future.

In his words, Nigeria’s large youth population presents a major advantage that must be harnessed through technology and innovation.

In order to empower young Nigerians and promote long-term progress, he urged stakeholders to take advantage of innovations like artificial intelligence.

U.S. Withdraws Embassy Staff From Abuja, Declares 23 Nigerian States ‘Do Not Travel’

The US Department of State has ordered family members and non-essential employees to leave the country’s Embassy in Abuja due to rising security concerns throughout Nigeria.

In a travel advisory released on Wednesday, the department urged Americans to reconsider travel to Nigeria starting April 8, 2026, citing rising crime, terrorism, kidnapping civil unrest, and limited healthcare services.

Nigeria is placed in the advisory’s “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” category, while 23 states are now on the more stringent “Level 4: Do Not Travel” category. Newly added to the Level 4 list are Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states. They join other northern states already considered high-risk, including Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and parts of Adamawa, where terrorism and kidnapping threats remain severe.

Due to significant crime and instability, some states in the South were also warned. These include Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers State, with the advisory specifically excluding Port Harcourt from the highest risk category.
The U.S. government warned that violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom are common, noting that American citizens are sometimes deliberately targeted. It also cautioned that terrorist attacks could occur without warning in crowded locations such as markets, places of worship, hotels, and public gatherings.

Concerns over Nigeria’s healthcare system were also brought up in the recommendation, which stated that medical services are still inconsistent and frequently fall short of international norms.

It was suggested that Americans who intended to visit Nigeria sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and establish clear personal safety measures before and during their stay.

500-Level Covenant University Student Dies After Football Match Breathing Complications Collapse

Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a 500-level Building Technology student at Covenant University (CU) in Ota, Ogun State, died after collapsing during a football match on campus.

In a statement signed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy A. Anake, the university attributed his d+ath to an undisclosed underlying heart condition and dismissed claims of negligence or inadequate medical care.

Tunmise abandoned the Chancellor’s Cup match due to leg pain and tiredness, according to the statement. Soon after, his condition worsened as he experienced breathing difficulties. Fellow students rushed him to the university’s medical centre, where medical personnel reportedly administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED), but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The university added that its management team remained present throughout the incident and supported the family.

Some students, however, contested this report, claiming that necessary supplies like nebulizers and oxygen were not available, and claiming that prayers were prioritised over urgent medical care. The Vice-Chancellor maintained that there was no shortage of staff or equipment. Meanwhile, a statement attributed to the deceased’s family raised concerns about discrepancies between the university’s account and eyewitness reports. The family questioned the speed at which conclusions were announced without an independent investigation and pointed to unresolved issues, including the timeline of events, his condition when help arrived, and the adequacy of the medical response.

They stated that they are investigating medical data and eyewitness accounts in order to obtain an unbiased assessment, noting that they have yet to acquire a clear medical explanation. Emphasising their commitment to truth and accountability, the family stated they are prepared to take necessary steps to fully understand the circumstances and urged transparency from all parties.

Drama in Kwara As APC Governorship Aspirant Resigns in Favor of a ‘Better Aspirant’

Today, a political event took place in Kwara State as a Aspirant for governor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Haliru Dantsoho Mahmud, publicly declared his ambition only to step down minutes later in favor of Ambassador Yahaya Seriki Gambari.

Mahmud, who represents the Kwara North Senatorial District, stated that his prior aspiration was driven by his zone’s historical isolation from producing a governor. But he stated consultations with key stakeholders led him to support Seriki, from Kwara Central, describing him as a “better aspirant” capable of uniting the state and driving inclusive development.

“For nearly three decades, Kwara North has stood loyal to our state, yet its time to lead has not come,” Mahmud said. “I have championed this cause because fairness and unity drive progress. Today, I step aside not in defeat, but in hope and faith that, together under Ambassador Seriki, Kwara will rise to new heights of growth, stability, and shared prosperity.”

Mahmud, also known as Dan’iyan Kaiama, stressed that supporters were consulted and the decision was reached after thorough consideration. He described Seriki as a unifying figure with a track record of youth empowerment, grassroots development, and bridge-building across communities, aligning closely with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

“This is not retreat; it is a rallying call. This is not weakness; it is wisdom. It is a sacrifice for unity and progress,” Mahmud stated, drawing applause from party members and supporters at the event held at an Events Centre on Old Offa Road, GRA, Ilorin.

Additionally, he used the occasion to praise the federal, state, and security agencies, for their response to the recent Woro incident, urging swift action to rescue abducted victims. This development represents a pivotal point in Kwara State’s political landscape in 2027.

Grandpa Drowns During Baptism As Pastor Says She Saw Him ‘Dancing With Jesus’

After a grandpa of seven drowned at a home baptism, a UK preacher was accused of manslaughter and she allegedly recorded a video saying she saw him “dancing with Jesus.”

Based on the Telegraph, Cheryl Bartley, 48, was live-streaming a ceremony in October 2023 for Robert Smith, 61, on the Facebook page of her Life Changing Ministries.

According to the report, Smith, a born-again Christian with Parkinson’s illness, was being baptized in a children’s paddling pool at the Birmingham home when the stream abruptly stopped.

Emergency services were called, but the grandfather of seven was already dead. A post-mortem revealed he died from drowning, West Midlands Police said when announcing charges Wednesday.

After the death, the pastor made a film about it, saying that she saw Smith in heaven, “dancing with Jesus,” according to the Telegraph.

She has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter — an offense which carries a sentence ranging between 1 and 18 years on average in the UK — and is set to appear in a Birmingham magistrates court on May 14.

Smith had spent 25 years living in the UK, but his birthplace was Jamaica. He was a barber in Brixton, London, according to the Guardian.

The Telegraph stated that although he had already been baptized, he desired the new ritual to become a “born-again believer.”

42 Years Old Married Lady Recently Declared Missing Found With a Man Inside Ondo Hotel Room

Olatunde Funke, a 42-year-old lady who was previously reported missing in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, was discovered in a motel in Ugbe-Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government Area, under circumstances that have sparked outrage throughout the state.

Her disappearance had initially triggered widespread concern among residents and family members after she reportedly left her matrimonial home without any prior notice. According to sources, her husband raised the alarm shortly after discovering her absence, prompting fears that she may have been abducted or harmed.

Ilara-Mokin and Ugbe-Akoko are separated by a distance of about 124 kilometres, with an estimated travel time of approximately two hours and forty minutes, making the development even more puzzling to those involved in the search. A source familiar with the incident disclosed to Roving Reporters that the situation caused significant panic within the community.

The source said, There was a lot of stress after her abrupt disappearance. Fearing the worst, family members and neighbors started looking for her right after. However, investigations later revealed that the woman was not kidnapped as initially suspected. Security operatives, acting on intelligence, traced her to a hotel in Ugbe-Akoko where she was found in the company of a 55-year-old man identified as Isa Alaba.

“She didn’t tell anyone before leaving on her own. The insider continued, “She was eventually found with the man in the hotel.” Further findings indicate that the woman has since been taken into protective custody while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her actions and the events leading to her disappearance.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, noted that the incident led to the deployment of security resources under the assumption that it was a possible case of abduction.

“This type of circumstance raises preventable concerns. Resources meant for genuine emergencies were mobilised because people feared a serious crime had occurred,” he said.

The police spokesperson used the opportunity to caution residents against actions capable of misleading authorities or causing unnecessary panic, particularly in cases involving missing persons.

Additionally, he emphasized the value of family communication, noting that many such situations could be prevented through dialogue and timely information sharing.

“There is a need for better communication, especially among couples. Issues like this can often be resolved through dialogue or family intervention instead of escalating into public concern,” Abayomi added.

He reiterated the Ondo State Police Command’s dedication to acting promptly to distress calls and safeguarding lives and property, while urging the public to always provide accurate and timely information when reporting incidents.

Drone Attack in Sudan’s Darfur Claimed The Lives Of Six Children And Other Victims

Twelve civilians were murdered in a drone strike on the paramilitary-controlled village of Kutum in the North Darfur province of Sudan, including six children, a medical source and local activists said on Thursday.

The attack on Wednesday coincides with a rise in drone assaults by both Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which have been at war since April 2023. A medical source told AFP that those brought to the hospital in Kutum included 12 dead, among them six children, including three female secondary school students.

Sixteen others were injured, including women and children, and are receiving treatment, the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity for safety reasons.

The pro-democracy El-Fasher Resistance Committee said that the army was responsible for the attack, which occurred in the Al-Salama neighborhood next to Al-Um Girls’ School. The United Nations reported last week that between January and mid-March, drone attacks had killed over 500 civilians, warning of “the devastating impact of high-tech and relatively cheap weapons in populated areas.”

Tens of thousands of people have died in the battle, which is almost three years old, displaced more than 11 million people and created what the UN describes as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis.
