Why I Turned Down Recording Deals – Niniola

Nigerian singer, Niniola has revealed the reason why she refused to be signed by a record label.
Recall that Niniola has been an independent artist despite approaches from record labels.
She explained that she rejected offers from record labels to sign her because she’s mindful of the business side of music unlike some of her colleagues.
She spoke in a recent interview with TVC.
“I have been an independent artist for 10 years. There are pros and cons of signing with a record label. I have seen the business side of doing music which a lot of people don’t see, they just focused only on making music.

“Being an independent artist gives me the opportunity to also do what I want. I’m in charge of my creativity.

“A label wanted to sign me after my debut single but I was sceptical because I didn’t want anyone to switch my style. Because at that time, nobody was doing Afro-house. They can dictate what you do because they are the ones financing you.

“For me, creative freedom is one of the major pros of being an indie artist,” she said.
Niniola also disclosed that she’s an introvert but music brings out the extrovert in her.

I Once Directed a Movie I Didn’t Understand – Kunle Afolayan

Movie producer, Kunle Afolayan has made a confession.
He stated that he once directed a movie he didn’t understand.
Afolayan stated this at the third edition of Kunle Afolayan Productions (KAP) Film & Television Academy’s Reel Circle, an initiative for film enthusiasts to learn from industry experts.
He said:
“I was asked to direct something I know nothing about. I tried to like bail out but somehow I was convinced that I could do it. But I knew, I did not know what I was going to do. I did not understand the story. It is an installation film, even at the time I didn’t know what installation film was.

“Before I agreed to it, I read the script, I did not understand it. I called someone Biodun Aleja, may his soul rest in peace, he read it and said ‘this is crazy’ and then a few other people. I spoke to the person who introduced me to the project that ‘can I meet with the producer? Maybe if she shares her vision, I would get it’.

“Then he flew me to London and we sat for like two hours and she was talking. She showed me her showreel and I knew there was a problem because the showreel did not make sense. It was a complete abstract installation, people just doing weird things and I am a narrative director. Then I called the link and said ‘I am not doing this, I would not even know what to say’.
“But he was like they are paying you $40,000, you have to do it. I said okay but I was like let us do an adaptation of a scene but even with it I did not know what to adapt. But because Biodun Aleja was there, he studied Performing Arts, so his literature is stronger. I was like look, we have to find a way. They are flying us to Miami and Chicago, we cannot turn that down.

“They did this and we went, we filmed in like the oldest museum. I was the director and there were five trucks of equipments. It’s like someone throwing you into the ocean and asking you to start swimming. I am like I am the director, so I have to use that power. But then I have always wanted to shoot in a space where they have large windows, where I can have a ray of light.

“So I was focusing on other things, I did not understand the story. Up till now, after we shot the film, if I watch it again, I am like what was the story? There was no story but guess what? They flew me to five countries to premiere the film and they were flying me in business class since 2007.”

Why I Rejected DMs of Footballers, Good-looking And Rich Guys – Media Personality Gbemi

Nigerian media personality Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi has opened up that she ignored DMs of several footballers, good-looking and rich guys.
She stated this in an interview with the Menisms podcast, while speaking on DM etiquette.
According to her, she’s afraid of such men screenshotting her chat and publicly posting.
Explaining further, she said:
“What is your take on DM etiquette

I don’t answer. When I was single, I didn’t answer. My phobia was they would screenshot the conversation and give it to a big chat. I am not going to lie. There were some rich people, good-looking guys, that would slide into my DM, and I wouldn’t answer. Footballers slid into my DM, I didn’t answer. I am not going to answer. See me in person and talk to me”.

Touching on dating younger men, Gbemi said she has no problem with it as her husband is younger than her. However, she has a specific age gap requirement as she doesn’t date men who are 5 years younger or older than her.

“I don’t have any problem with dating younger. My husband is younger than me. I have a thing that my man shouldn’t be 5 years older or younger than me”.

Court Adjourns Falana’s Suit Against Verydarkman Till Next Year

The defamation suit against social media influencer, Vincent Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, VDM has been adjourned till January 23, 2025.
The suit was adjourned on Thursday by a Lagos High Court.
The defamation suit was brought against VDM by human rights activist, Femi Falana and his son, Folarin, popularly known as Falz.
Recall that VDM had arrived in court dressed in a red native attire, surrounded by fans cheering him on, but the Falanas were absent.
It was gathered that the case could not proceed because most of the applications filed by the parties are not yet in the court file. The court had to adjourn the hearing to January 23, 2025.
Recall that on October 14, Justice Matthias Dawodu while ruling on an exparte application for an order of interim and preemptive remedy brought by the Falanas, held that they have legal rights to be protected from being slandered.
The court also ordered VDM to bring down the alleged defamatory video that he made on September 24, 2025, against the SAN and his son.
Justice Dawodu also restrained the self-acclaimed social media police from further releasing, publishing, or circulating any defamatory videos and comments against the senior lawyer and his son on all his online social media handles and pages pending the hearing of the suit filed by the duo.
The judge further ordered that all the processes in the matter be served on VeryDarkMan through his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju.
The Falanas had dragged the defendant before the court in separate suits, claiming N500 million each as damages over a video he posted on his social media platforms alleging that they collected N10 million from Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, to pervert the course of justice.
In their suits, the father and son submitted that the defendant knew all his comments were unverified and not true, yet he proceeded to publish the same to injure their reputation recklessly.
They also stated that the alleged defamatory publication is still trending on the defendant’s online handles and pages and as such, the injury to their reputation continues as long as the publication remains online.
In response, VDM applied to the court for leave to appeal the ruling.
He also submitted that a refusal by the court would amount to miscarriage of justice, as the case involves significant legal questions that merit further review.
He stated, “A refusal to grant leave may result in the enforcement of a decision that does not reflect a correct application of the law, leading to outcomes that may be detrimental not only to the parties involved but also to the administration of justice as a whole.

“The appellate court’s role in clarifying and, where necessary, correcting trial court decisions are vital in maintaining the integrity of the judicial system.”
