I Was Tired, I Wanted More For Myself – Nigerian Singer, Liya Reveals Why She Left Davido’s Record Label (Video)

Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, the Nigerian singer and songwriter, who is popularly known as Liya, has revealed why she left Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).

Liya, who was the first female artist to sign with DMW in October 2020, said she exited the record label because she wanted more for herself.

The singer had announced her exit from the label in 2023 during an Instagram question-and-answer session.

Replying to a fan who asked if she was still with DMW, she wrote, “Nopee, but #30bg for lifee.

Speaking on a recent episode of Wahala with Josy Anne, the singer said leaving the label was not an easy decision.

“Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself, as a person and as an artist. I wanted more for myself. It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision that I had to make for myself. Yeah, because everyone thought I had it all figured out,” she said.

Liya also said people judged her wrongly during that period and accused her of doing nothing.

“They called me names. People saying, Oh, she’s just lazy. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. They’re just pouring money on her, and she’s not doing anything for over a year or two years. They’d just be like, oh, yeah, you just don’t know what you’re doing. It was my fault,”she said.

She added that things got so bad that she stopped handling her Instagram posts by herself for about two or three years.

“And all that period, I just did not know how to post by myself. For the past two or three years. I never posted myself on Instagram. Yeah. I always have my manager post for me. I mean, we’ll put the pictures and stuff together, slides and everything. But then I just send everything to him. Oh, this is the first slide, second slide,” she said.

Liya, however, praised her manager for staying patient with her through it all.

“He was tired, but I’m so glad he understood. He was very patient with me. He never pushed me or forced me to post myself,” she added.

Why Davido Should Have Distributed N200m Birthday Donation To Music Legends – Singer Konga Speaks (Video)

Veteran singer Konga has expressed his disappointment over what he describes as the lack of support from the current generation of Nigerian artists toward industry legends.

Speaking in a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, the Kabakaba crooner said Davido should have supported Nigerian music legends with the N200 million birthday donations he received from his friends and fans in 2021.

Recall that Davido added N50 million of his own money, bringing the total to N250 million, which he donated to 292 orphanages across Nigeria.

However, Konga argued that it would have been better if he had used the funds to support struggling music legends, stressing that the funds could have rejuvenated their careers.

He said, “The present crops of Nigerian artists need to humble themselves. Nobody is dragging their money with them. But they have used peer pressure to chase a lot of Nigerian music legends into doing menial jobs abroad.

“If I were part of Davido’s management, one time his friends contributed money to him, I would have said – ‘Davido, carry this money, go and give it to all these legends… bring Baba Fryo back, bring Daddy Showkey. Give Daddy Showkey, Baba Fryo and others N5 million each.’

“If he had done that, the industry would have waken up. Our legends would have dropped a lot of comeback hits. Our music legends are running away due to lack of support. Look at Lord of Ajasa, is that a joke to you? And someone like Olamide will come out to say Wizkid is the greatest Nigerian artist internationally. Where is that coming from? We have been doing international shows for ages.

“You guys are only taking it forward from where we stopped. Fela, King Sunny Ade, Majek Fashek and others have been touring the world for years. Just because our achievements were not documented back then does not mean we did not do anything.”

Davido has reportedly unfollowed Dele Momodu on Instagram, sparking speculation about a possible rift between the Afrobeats star and the media personality.

This comes few hours after the publisher spoke about efforts to resolve the dispute between the singer and his niece, Sophia Momodu.

A check on Davido’s verified Instagram page on Wednesday showed that Momodu’s account was no longer listed among those he follows.

The development has sparked reactions online, especially as it comes shortly after Momodu addressed the ongoing issues between Davido and Sophia over their daughter, Imade Adeleke.

Momodu had shared that he received several appeals from fans during his visit to Liberia, urging him to help settle the rift between the former partners.

He stated that steps were being taken privately to find a peaceful solution and asked well-wishers to keep praying for the family.

Lawyer Fires Back At Nigerian Singer, Davido Over Social Media Harassment After Custody Case

A fresh wave of controversy has surfaced in the ongoing custody battle between Afrobeats star Davido and his daughter, Imade, after the singer opted to withdraw from the case. His decision, along with the public reactions that followed, prompted an official statement from the law firm representing the child’s mother.

Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, announced late Friday that he had opted to discontinue the custody proceedings, insisting that he never sought sole custody of his daughter but only requested joint custody.

He maintained that no party emerged victorious from the case, describing the situation as a loss for the child involved.

“I never asked for full custody … I asked for joint custody. Nobody won, nobody lost but Imade … so I don’t know why some pple r celebrating. There’s nothing to celebrate,” the singer wrote on X.

Explaining his decision to withdraw, Davido alleged that events during court proceedings took an unacceptable turn, claiming that references were made to his late son, an experience he described as deeply distressing.

“I’ve decided to drop the case because … until she brought out her last card! MY DECEASED SON! THAT’S A NO NO! Lowest blow!” He stated.

The artiste added that his actions were driven by love and responsibility toward his daughter, expressing confidence that his efforts would be understood in the future.

“My daughter will grow up knowing I fought for her … let’s move on. One love!” he wrote.

Davido also took to his Instagram story to criticise the opposing legal team, alleging unprofessional conduct during the proceedings.

“I disgraced you in the courtroom … I was teaching you your work … and then went on to mention my son. Like I said in the courtroom, I pray you never go through what me and my wife have gone through ever,” he posted.

The online outburst followed earlier social media commentary by a Lagos-based legal practitioner, Maruf Muhammed, who had drawn public attention to tense moments during proceedings at the Lagos State High Court, Yaba.

“Davido in High Court, Yaba now! Come and see drama in court. The lawyer made 001 lose his patience during cross-examination o! Be you never so high, the law is above you,”Muhammed wrote, later clarifying that the matter before the court related to the custody of Davido’s daughter, Imade.

In response to the public commentary and what it described as harassment directed at its partner, the law firm representing Imade’s mother, Sophia, issued a strongly worded statement defending its conduct and warning against intimidation of legal practitioners.

In the statement dated February 16, 2026, the firm said its attention had been drawn to inflammatory public statements, allegedly orchestrated by a Nigerian Afrobeats artiste on social media, concerning a custody matter currently before a court of competent jurisdiction in Lagos State.

“That matter is sub judice. It will be decided by the court alone, on evidence and law, and no amount of media commentary will sway that process or our approach to the case,” the firm stated.

It stressed that it would not comment on the substance of the case, citing adherence to the highest standards of professional conduct, but warned that threats, intimidation or harassment of counsel outside the courtroom pose a serious threat to the administration of justice.

“However, if legal practitioners are to be threatened, intimidated, or exposed to harassment outside the courtroom for asking questions, testing evidence, or discharging their professional duty to their clients, then the very foundation of justice is imperilled,” the statement said.

The firm added that fearless advocacy remained essential to the justice system, warning that when lawyers were forced to weigh personal safety against professional duty, the rule of law was weakened.

“It will not begin with us,” the firm declared, noting that it would deploy every lawful measure available to resist any attempt to intimidate counsel or undermine judicial proceedings.

It further called on the Nigerian Bar Association and lawyers globally to condemn what it described as an aberration and a gross violation of the legal profession.

The statement was jointly signed by the Management and Board of Partners of the firm.

Meanwhile, the custody dispute continues to attract public attention, with fans and observers calling for peaceful co-parenting, even as both sides maintain their positions amid heightened public scrutiny.

Daddy Freeze Weighs Into Davido And Sophia Momodu Custody Drama; Calls Out Nigerian Lawyers (Video)

Daddy Freeze, the Nigerian media personality, has weighed in on the ongoing custody dispute between singer Davido and Sophia Momodu concerning their daughter, Imade Adeleke.

According to him, someone close to the lawyer involved had reached out to complain about the backlash she has been facing online after Davido publicly called her out.

While he said he does not support intimidation, bullying, or harassment of any kind, Daddy Freeze stated that the situation highlights a deeper issue in Nigeria’s legal system.

He explained that lawyers often use harsh words and personal attacks in court just to win cases, noting that he had also experienced insults during his  court proceedings.

Freeze particularly questioned why deeply sensitive issues, including references to Davido’s late son, were allegedly brought up during arguments, describing such tactics as unnecessary low blows.

He added that while someone might win in court, social media remains the “court of public opinion,” where outcomes can be very different.

Drama As Davido Drags Nigerian Gospel Singer, Tosin Bee Into Child Custody Battle With Sophia Momodu

The child custody dispute between Nigerian singer Davido (David Adeleke) and his first child’s mother, Sophia Momodu, escalated dramatically after the musician launched a scathing attack on popular gospel singer Tosin Bee.

The incident comes in the wake of Davido’s outburst in court over the custody of his daughter, Imade Adeleke, which had already drawn widespread public attention.

During the court proceedings on Thursday at the Lagos State High Court, Yaba, Davido fumed at a lawyer representing Sophia for referencing the death of his son, Ifeanyi Adeleke.

In a post via Instagram, Davido further slammed the lawyer identified as Ebelechukwu Enedah, who was involved in his child custody proceedings.

He wrote, “@Belachukwu, I disgraced you in the courtroom. I was teaching you your work, you couldn’t even take it and then went on to mention my son.

“Like I said in the courtroom, I pray you never go through what me and my wife have gone through ever, and you were still smiling, smirking.

“You are a wicked human being. You are the worst lawyer ever. I beat you in court. You are not learned.”

Shortly after venting his frustrations, Davido reposted a post from gospel artiste, Tosin Bee, to his Instagram story on Friday , mistakenly assuming a connection between the gospel artist and Enedah.

Davido wrote, “And she has a son. Tosin you will live long amen with the rubbish you dey sing. So your son nah musician Bella Chukwu. You no even get sense. Make we help am. Useless people.”

The repost triggered an immediate backlash, with fans attacking Tosin Bee’s Instagram page under the impression he had a personal connection to the lawyer Davido mentioned.

However, reacting to the sudden wave of hostility, Tosin Bee clarified the situation, describing it as a case of mistaken identity.

He wrote, “Hello Mr David, I don’t know anything about the post you made. As a matter of fact, my mum went to be with the Lord eight years ago.

“I guess this is a case of mistaken identity. So sorry you had to deal with this, but my prayers are with you. I love you brother.”
