Minimum Wage: States Have No Excuse Not To Pay Beyond N70,000 — Employers Association

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has stated that state governments have no excuse for not paying civil servants above the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage, pointing to rising federal allocations and the growing cost of living nationwide.

NECA’s Director General, Adewale Smatt-Oyerinde, stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

He argued that the surge in monthly revenues shared from the Federation Account has weakened the claims by some state governors that they cannot meet the new wage benchmark.

President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law in July 2024, raising the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 after months of negotiations with labour unions, the private sector, and lawmakers.

Since then, some states have gone above the federal threshold. On August 27, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma announced a new minimum wage of N104,000, while Ebonyi State approved N90,000 for its civil servants a day later.

Smatt-Oyerinde maintained that given these developments, no state could reasonably claim financial incapacity.

“No state really has an excuse in the context of the current reality to stay at N70,000, especially with people struggling with the price of petrol. While many states are still doing a lot with the CNG buses, more still needs to be done.

“A lot still needs to be done in the context of food security and shelter. Once you deal with that, the conversation would not really be about minimum wage because the quantum of that N70,000 will be able to buy enough for an average household.”

He stressed that workers remain critical drivers of both the public and private sectors, adding that poor wages weaken productivity.

“If you are hungry, if you have issues with shelter and transport, hardly would you be productive at work. Whatever will improve productivity will increase motivation, especially within the context of ongoing reforms.”

The NECA boss urged governors to view the civil service as the “engine that drives the system” and to treat workers as vital contributors to economic growth, not as expendable costs. He concluded by echoing the International Labour Organization’s principle that “workers are not commodities.”

Sevilla Terminate Kelechi Iheanacho’s Contract

Kelechi Iheanacho’s contract with Spanish club Sevilla has been terminated.
The club and Iheancho reached a mutual agreement to end the contract, which was originally set to run until June 30, 2026.
Iheanacho, who joined Sevilla on a free transfer from Leicester City last summer, struggled to establish himself at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. He made 15 appearances across all competitions in the first half of the 2024/25 season, scoring three goals, before being loaned to Championship side Middlesbrough in January.
During his spell in England, the 28-year-old registered one goal and two assists in 15 matches, but his performances were not enough to earn a return to Sevilla’s plans.
He failed to make the matchday squad for the club’s opening three league games this season, signaling the end of his time in Spain.
A club statement confirmed the departure:
“Sevilla FC and Kelechi Iheanacho have reached an agreement to terminate the contract of the Nigerian striker. Iheanacho joined the club last summer after ending his contract with Leicester City.”
The Super Eagles star is now strongly linked with a move to Scottish champions Celtic, where he could reunite with manager Brendan Rodgers, his former coach at Leicester City.
Iheanacho’s next move will be crucial as he seeks to revive his career ahead of Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations.

I Can’t Appoint Just Anybody – Tinubu Explains Difficulty In Releasing Ambassadorial List

President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the challenges and delays surrounding the appointment of Nigerian ambassadors.

Tinubu said he can’t appoint just anybody, hence the difficulty in releasing the list.

Stressing that he still has some ambassadorial slots, Tinubu appreciated Nigerians for their patience.

In a video, the president said he needs to cure the state economy and bring hope to Nigerians before unveiling his ambassadors.

“I couldn’t appoint everybody that I could have appointed, thank you for your patience till now. I still have some slots for ambassadorial positions that too many people are craving for, but it’s not easy stitching together those names.

“First of all, cure the economy, bring hope to the people as that is what we stop for and that hope is here, thank you for believing in me,” he said.

The last set of Nigerian ambassadors were appointed during the past administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, he is yet to appoint ambassadors despite mounting pressure from Nigerians.

He Cannot Hold Nigeria by The Jugular Like You Did in Lagos – Dele Momodu Tells President Tinubu

Publisher Dele Momodu has sent a message to President Tinubu Tinubu.
According to him, Tinubu cannot hold Nigeria by the jugular like he did in Lagos.
He claims to have been close to President Tinubu for over 32 years, with their relationship dating back to their time in exile during the struggle for democracy.
Momodu, who is very critical of the Tinubu government, states that he holds no grudge against the president. However, as a “true friend,” he believes he should be able to tell Tinubu that he cannot ‘control Nigeria as he did in Lagos.’
A post he shared on X this evening reads;

‘’I have been very close to PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU in over 32 years. We became closer in exile from 1995-98. After we returned to Nigeria from England, he became Lagos Governor for eight years and has locked down the state in the last 26 years. Rather than join his band of acolytes, I humbly decided to build a global brand and God answered my prayers, the reason I have been able to survive on my modest income. I have nothing personal against the PRESIDENT but a true friend should be able to tell him that he cannot hold Nigeria by the jugular like he did in Lagos. He should sell his achievements to deserve a second term and not by use of direct and subterranean Federal might… It is that simple…”

Court Orders Two DNA Tests on Mohbad’s Son

The Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has given an order for two Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) tests be carried out on Liam Aloba, the son of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The order was granted by Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
This is coming after an application was filed by the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, who sought a paternity test.
The late Mohbad’s wife, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent in the application brought under the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009.
The application requested that samples be taken from the remains of the deceased at the Military Hospital in Yaba for use in conducting the tests, either within Lagos or in another recognised facility outside the state.
It further sought approval for a separate test to be conducted abroad at the applicant’s expense.
In court filings, Aloba argued that uncertainty about Liam’s paternity made it necessary to conclusively settle the matter, stressing its importance for maintenance obligations and the child’s welfare.
At the hearing, Aloba was represented by Augustine Adegbemi from the chambers of Dr Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared for the respondent. The application was moved without opposition, leading the magistrate to grant the request.
The court directed that the tests be conducted in accredited hospitals in Nigeria and abroad, with both parties or their representatives present during sample collection.
The matter was adjourned to November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
The 26-year-old singer died on September 12, 2023, after sustaining an injury on the back of his right arm.
He was treated and given an injection at his Lekki home by a nurse, and d!ed shortly after he developed a sudden convulsion.  He was buried the following day.
Following a massive public outcry, the body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy on the orders of the Lagos State Government.
The findings in that autopsy concluded on April 29, 2024, showed that the cause of death couldn’t be ascertained as the internal organs were already “in a state of moderate to severe decomposition”.
The second autopsy was ordered by the Coroner in June 2024, after the deceased’s family made an application for an independent review.

You Can’t Sack Tinubu With Same Method Used Against Jonathan – Kwankwaso Warns El-Rufai

Musa Ilyasu Kwankwoso, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has sent a message to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai.
According to him, El-Rufai can’t remove President Bola Tinubu the same way he orchestrated the removal of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Kwankwaso stated this ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued to journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Kwankwaso described El-Rufai’s approach as outdated and ineffective, warning that the same tactics used against former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 could not be replicated against Tinubu.
“You cannot oust President Bola Tinubu from the presidency in 2027 by engaging in the same method you did to former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, using poverty, insecurity and economic devastation. Your blackmail is clear to all,” Kwankwaso said.
The APC chieftain maintained that President Tinubu had made notable progress in addressing insecurity and stabilizing prices of commodities, crediting National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu for ongoing improvements in the security sector. He accused El-Rufai of being displeased with these gains, insisting that Nigerians could clearly see the government’s efforts.
Kwankwaso further challenged El-Rufai to present evidence to support his allegations that the Tinubu administration was sponsoring banditry and other criminal acts. “In the absence of such evidence, El-Rufai should desist from further comments and allow the government to continue the good things it is doing for Nigerians,” he added.
He also alleged that El-Rufai was attempting to instigate the northern region against the Tinubu administration, but stressed that northerners were “not stupid” and could see the progress being made in areas like Birnin Gwari, Sokoto, and Borno.
Tagging the emerging coalition of opposition politicians as “a failure,” Kwankwaso argued that figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and El-Rufai had nothing better to offer Nigerians. “Who amongst them has performed as good as Tinubu when he had the chance?” he asked.
The Kano APC stalwart also recalled recent successes recorded by security agencies in arresting commanders of bandits and terrorists. He called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Tinubu administration while discarding “all forms of blackmail perpetrated by opposition figures.”
