UEFA Gives Clarifications After PSG’s Penalty Call Against Liverpool Was Overturned

After the VAR ruling, UEFA provided a detailed explanation to overturn a penalty initially awarded to Paris Saint-Germain during their Champions League semi-final first-leg clash with Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes.

The Ligue 1 winners had a 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, when Liverpool’s situation appeared set to worsen in the 70th minute. Ibrahima Konaté was adjudged to have fouled Warren Zaïre-Emery inside the penalty area, with referee José María Sánchez immediately pointing to the spot and showing the defender a yellow card.

But VAR stepped in right away and suggested a review. Replays showed that Konaté had made a fair challenge and won the ball before any significant contact with the PSG midfielder. After a brief pitchside check, Sánchez overturned his initial decision, cancelled the penalty, withdrew the yellow card, and awarded a free-kick to Liverpool.

Later, UEFA provided clarification on the call on its official Champions League live blog, saying:
“Decision overturned: no penalty. Penalty cancelled – no foul. Liverpool player No. 5 challenged for the ball in a fair manner without committing a foul.”

The incident sparked debate among pundits. Speaking on TNT Sports, Ally McCoist backed the decision, saying: “I thought it looked a brilliant challenge. He comes from behind, but it seemed like he got the ball cleanly.”

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson disagreed, arguing: “Konaté gets on the wrong side and isn’t goal-side. He does get a touch on the ball, but I think he catches Zaïre-Emery first.”

Less sure, Stephen Warnock added: “I’m still not convinced either way. He may brush the player before the ball, but I’m not sure it’s enough to warrant a penalty.”

PSG won 2-0 to seize control of the match, and Liverpool was unable to react even if the decision went in their favor. I

UCL: Diaz shines, then self-destructs as 10-man Bayern beat PSG

Bayern Munich secured a crucial 2-1 Champions League win over defending champions Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes on Tuesday, despite being reduced to ten men before halftime.

Former Liverpool winger Luis Diaz was both hero and villain, scoring twice in the first half before being sent off for a reckless tackle on Achraf Hakimi.

Diaz shines, then self-destructs

Bayern made a blistering start, taking the lead inside four minutes when Diaz pounced on a rebound after Michael Olise’s shot was parried by Lucas Chevalier.

The German side dominated play and nearly doubled their advantage through Aleksandar Pavlovic and Serge Gnabry, who struck both posts in one attempt.

Diaz eventually got his second, dispossessing Marquinhos and calmly slotting home. Bayern appeared in full control until disaster struck moments before halftime, Diaz launched into a dangerous two-footed challenge on Hakimi, earning a straight red after VAR review.

PSG rally but fall short

With Bayern down to ten, PSG pressed relentlessly after the break. Luis Enrique introduced Goncalo Ramos and Joao Neves to tilt the balance, and Neves eventually pulled one back with a superb volley from Kang-in Lee’s cross.

Despite sustained pressure and several late chances, including another Neves header that went narrowly wide, PSG couldn’t break down Bayern’s disciplined defense.

Upamecano stands tall for Bayern

Dayot Upamecano delivered a standout defensive performance, repelling wave after wave of PSG attacks as Bayern held firm to claim a vital away victory.

Barcelona stunned as PSG snatch late Champions League win

Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season as Paris Saint-Germain secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory in their Champions League clash at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Tuesday night.

The Catalans took an early lead through Ferran Torres but failed to build on their dominance, allowing Luis Enrique’s depleted PSG side to fight back and claim all three points courtesy of a late strike from Gonçalo Ramos.

Barcelona start strong but fail to capitalise

Barcelona began on the front foot, with Lamine Yamal pulling the strings in attack.

After Torres squandered a golden opportunity from Yamal’s superb trivela pass, the forward quickly redeemed himself by tapping home Marcus Rashford’s cross to open the scoring.

However, PSG responded well and levelled before half-time. Nuno Mendes drove through midfield before setting up 18-year-old Senny Mayulu, who fired past Wojciech Szczesny to make it 1-1 in the 39th minute.

Missed chances prove costly

The home side pushed to restore their advantage after the break and nearly did so when Dani Olmo’s close-range effort was cleared off the line by Achraf Hakimi.

Barcelona were left frustrated again as PSG created openings of their own, with Lee Kang-in hitting the post after a dazzling solo run.

Ramos delivers late blow

PSG’s persistence paid off in the final moments. Substitute Gonçalo Ramos struck in the 90th minute to complete the turnaround and hand the reigning champions a vital away victory.

Barcelona will be disappointed at squandering their lead, particularly against a PSG side missing key players including Marquinhos, Joao Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé.

Dembele hails ‘wonderful’ Yamal, insists ‘he’ll win several Ballon d’Or awards’

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele has hailed Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal after edging him to the 2025 Ballon d’Or on Monday night in Paris.

Dembele, who spearheaded PSG’s historic treble-winning campaign last season, claimed football’s top individual prize ahead of Yamal and Vitinha.

Dembele’s treble-winning campaign

The Frenchman registered 37 goals and 16 assists across all competitions as PSG secured their maiden Champions League title alongside Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France.

His heroics left voters with little doubt as he clinched the Golden Ball at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

Barcelona also enjoyed a stellar year under Yamal’s influence, lifting La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

However, their Champions League semi-final exit tilted the balance in Dembele’s favour.

Classy words for Yamal

In his emotional acceptance speech, Dembele lauded his teenage rival: “Lamine Yamal is an exceptional young man. A wonderful player with great maturity. I believe he will win several Ballon d’Or awards.”

Tribute to family

The PSG star also fought back tears as he thanked those closest to him. “To my mother, I want to thank you. You have always been there for me, mama,” he said.

“To my family, we have experienced so much together. We have been through it all. We will always be together.”

Future battle for football’s biggest prize

Dembele’s prediction for Yamal may not be far-fetched. At just 18, the Spaniard has already carved his name into football’s elite, recording five goal contributions in his first three games of the new campaign before picking up an injury.

Dembele himself has also been nursing a knock but is expected to feature when PSG host Auxerre in Ligue 1 next weekend.

Super Cup: PSG edge Tottenham on penalties after late comeback

Paris Saint-Germain lifted the Super Cup after coming from two goals down to beat Tottenham on penalties.

Europa League holders Spurs struck first through Micky van de Ven just before halftime, and captain Cristian Romero doubled the advantage early in the second half.

However, Lee Kang-in pulled one back with a powerful strike five minutes from time, before substitute Goncalo Ramos equalised in stoppage time to force a shootout.

PSG held their nerve from the spot to deny Tottenham a long-awaited trophy, beating them 4-3.

Hakimi maintains innocence over rape allegations

Paris Saint-Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi has publicly addressed the rape allegations against him for the first time, insisting he is innocent and confident the truth will prevail.

Speaking to Foot Africa, the Morocco international described the experience as “horrible” and “unfair.”

He adds, “I am calm. Being falsely accused is horrible, unfair. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

“I know the truth will come out. I have nothing to blame myself for, and those who know me are aware of that.”

Hakimi is accused of raping a 24-year-old woman in March 2023. French prosecutors have called for the case to go to trial, alleging he invited the woman to his Boulogne-Billancourt home while his wife and children were away.

The 25-year-old says he remains focused on his family and football, reiterating that he expects full exoneration once proceedings conclude.
