Election Violence: SERAP Tells INEC To Commence Investigation Or Face Legal Action

Nigerian civic group, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent a message to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group told Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the INEC to immediately seek the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate allegations of electoral offences and other electoral violence, including bribery during the recently concluded general elections.

SERAP disclosed this in a letter on Saturday, signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP deputy director.

The statement partly read, “Identifying, arresting, investigating and prosecuting those suspected of perpetrating electoral violence and other electoral offences during the 2023 general elections would act as a deterrent against electoral violence in future elections.

“We would be grateful if immediate steps are taken to implement the recommended measures within seven days of the receipt and publication of this letter. If we haven’t heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel INEC to comply with our request in the public interest.”

Recall that the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections were conducted on February 25.

Also, the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections were held on March 18 across 28 states out of 36 states in Nigeria.

Sen. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, won the Presidential election after defeating strong contenders, the PDP’s Atiktu Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi. Tinubu has already received his Certificate of Return from INEC.

Twenty-six (26) Governors-elect have been announced so far by the INEC and will be presented their Certificate of Return later this month.

Why I’m Not Nice To Everyone — Skit Maker, Kiekie Opens Up

Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, a content creator, aka Kiekie, has talked about her relationships with other people.

She said that she does not try to be nice to everyone, as not everybody will like one regardless of what one does.

Speaking during an interview on the Tea with Tay podcast, she said, “I don’t believe that things should be handed to me. I believe in owning it. I believe that I am enough. I don’ try to be unnecessarily nice or friendly with people. That is one reality many people are not really open to. No one likes everybody or everything. There are some foods that one does not like. So, why should everybody like one?

“I said to myself if I was not given a platform, I would create one myself. As of that time, I had started posting fashion content, and I had 20,000 followers on Instagram.”

Kiekie also noted that she was very mischievous as a child.

She said, “I am the last child. Being the last child comes with a lot of mischief. I was very mischievous as a child. And, that made me to get away with many things. I attended a girls only school, and I stayed in the hostel. Since I was very young, my parents had known that I was going to be a child of wonders. At no point did they try to stop me.”

Opposition parties are trying to truncate my inauguration – Tinubu

Tinubu has raised an alarm over alleged plots by opposition parties to truncate his transition process, coming up on the 29th of May, 2023.

Festus Keyamo, his spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday, March 25:

“We have watched with great concern the condemnable activities of some persons and groups who are desirous of truncating our democracy.

For reasons best known to them, these persons have remained embitt£red that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared winner of the 2023 General Elections.

Repeatedly, but unfortunately, these misguided individuals have called for either the cancellation of the results or that the President-elect should not be inaugurated on the 29th of May, 2023.

We wish to reiterate and emphasise that these positions are not in tandem with our constitutional provisions or our electoral laws. We would have taken these as mere wishful thinking, however, because of their implications for national security and public order, we have therefore considered it necessary, if not expedient, to call them to order.

We are aware of the intentions of those engaged in these treasonable and subversive acts. We also know those involved in the many plots being contrived to undermine the transition in particular and democracy in general.

They have done it in this country before and it threw the country into avoidable cri§es for many years and they want to do it again. They are bent on delegitimizing the new government.

Some have made treasonable insinuations and openly called for military take-over. It is for these reasons that they are de§perate to incite the people against the incoming Government.

It is perplexing to see that those contesting the results want to be in the courts and on the streets at the same time. However, if their intention is to truncate the inauguration of the President-elect and Vice-President-elect, they should immediately bury the thought.

It is gratifying to note that the President has set in motion steps for the actualisation of the swearing-in ceremonies.“
