Gov Election 2023: Sanwo-Olu Wins Polling Unit

The governor of Lagos state and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, defeated Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Abdulazeez Adediran of Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, at Polling Unit 6, Eiyekole, Lagos Island, in the ongoing governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

Sanwo-Olu polled 121 votes while Adediran and Rhodes-Vivour secured only one and two votes respectively.

The Independent National Electoral Commission officials as well as the security agencies arrived as early as 7:30 in the morning and voting started at exactly 9 am.

Addressing journalists shortly after casting his votes, Sanwo-Olu sued for peaceful conduct of the election while expressing satisfaction over the turnout of voters.

He said: “We are happy with the turnout of voters in this election. I was told INEC officials came right on time, and voting is on.

“I think it’s time for us to see and understand that this process is not meant to be one of violence. The election that leads to a democratic process is the best form of validating what true democracy is all about.

“I want to reiterate that this contest is about peace, progress, and prosperity. Everyone has the right to be able to advocate for everyone to freely express themselves, fairly, and transparently.”

Several persons sustained injuries in the early hours of Saturday, as supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, clashed in ward 7 of Ibarapa East East Local Government Area of Oyo State as the gubernatorial poll is about to begin.

According to reports, trouble started when some suspected supporters of PDP allegedly attacked a bus carrying some people to the election ground.

In a reprisal attack, some supporters of APC were said to have traced the leaders of the attackers to their hideout where a free-for-all ensued, leaving many people wounded.

At least, one of the wounded was said to be on danger list at an undisclosed hospital in the town.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to contact the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, to comment on the matter, proved abortive, as calls placed across to him were not answered.

Operatives of Osun Amotekun Corps have arrested a 35-year-old man, Tunde Abidoye in the state.

Abidoye was arrested with a single barrel gun in Ile Ogbo, Ayedire local government of Osun State on Friday following a complaint lodged at the Ayedire Command of the security outfit.

The complaint was that Abidoye was unleashing terror on residents of the town and destroying their properties.

I Was Only Joking, I Did Not Threaten Igbos In Lagos – MC Oluomo Clarifies

Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo, the Chairman of Lagos State Parks and Garages (LASPG), has dismissed claims that he threatened Igbos in the viral video which sparked outrage on social media.

In a viral video shared on Thursday, March 16, Oluomo urged his members to vote for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He went on to state that if “Iya Chukwudi” meaning “Chukwudi’s mum” doesn’t want to vote for APC on Saturday she should sit at home. Many people took his comment as a threat to Igbos ahead of the state governorship election.

”We have begged them. If they don’t want to vote for us, it doesn’t call for a fight. Iya Chukwudi, if you don’t want to vote for us, stay at home.”

In a video shared on Friday, March 17, Akinsanya, who described Iya Chukwudi as his sister and good neighbour, said he has always been related peacefully with the Igbos living and trading in Oshodi.

“At no point did I threaten anyone. We’ve enjoyed a long harmonious relationship. Not at this point will I do that. I buy things regularly from Iya Chukwudi and was only joking with her. Mischief makers took our friendly conversation out of context just to label me as a bad person. Lagos State has been peaceful and we don’t pray for violence in our state” he said

In the video said MC Oluomo related well with her and always buys items from her shop. She expressed surprise that their friendly conversation was taken out of context.

“It was my daughter that called my attention to it on social media. I and MC Oluomo have been friends for ages. My people, there’s no iota of truth in what people are sharing on social media. MC Oluomo is my good neighbour,”

COVID-19 May End This Year – WHO

The World Health Organisation has predicted that the ravaging COVID-19 virus may likely end as a public health emergency in 2023.

The Director General of the Organisation, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus disclosed this at a virtual media briefing on Friday, March 17.

Recall that COVID-19 was declared a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020, when there were fewer than 100 reported cases of COVID-19 outside China, and also no reported deaths outside the Communist country.

A public health emergency of international concern is the highest level of alarm that the WHO can sound under international law.

During the briefing, the WHO chief said there were now almost seven million reported deaths from COVID-19, although the actual number of deaths was much higher.

“We are certainly in a much better position now than we have been at any time during the pandemic. It’s very pleasing to see that for the first time, the weekly number of reported deaths in the past four weeks has been lower than when we first used the word ‘pandemic’ three years ago.

“I am confident that this year we will be able to say that COVID-19 is over as a public health emergency of international concern.

“We are not there yet. Last week, there were still more than five thousand reported deaths. That’s five thousand too many for a disease that can be prevented and treated. Even as we become increasingly hopeful about the end of the pandemic, the question of how it began remains unanswered,” he said.

Ghebreyesus urged China to be ‘transparent’ in sharing COVID-19 data in efforts to determine the disease’s origins.

‘John Wick’ movie star Lance Reddick is dead

Actor Lance Reddick, famous for his roles in The Wire and the John Wick franchise, has passed away at 60 due to natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, according to his representative.

The death of Lance Reddick struck many by surprise and has since left the internet space with memories and tribute to the actor.

The Wire creator David Simon released a statement to the Hollywood Reporter to express his grief.

“A consummate professional, a devoted collaborator, a lovely soul and a friend. This is just gutting and way, way, way too soon for any of us who knew and loved him to contemplate,” he wrote.

In a tweet, Wendell Pierce, Reddick’s co-star in the show paid tribute;

“A man of great strength and grace. As talented a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of class. A sudden unexpected sharp painful grief for our artistic family. An unimaginable suffering for his personal family and loved ones. Godspeed my friend. You made your mark here. RIP,” he wrote.

Reddick’s acting credits also include the sci-fi series Fringe and the action thriller White House Down. He was recently doing interviews for his role in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 but chose not to attend the film’s New York premiere earlier this week.

His most notable role was playing Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels in HBO’s crime drama The Wire, which had a predominantly black cast, making it a rare and extraordinary experience for Reddick.
