Tinubu Calls for Stronger Child Inclusion as Nigeria Marks Children’s Day in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has called on governments at all levels, families, and communities to go beyond symbolic gestures and build a culture where children are truly listened to and actively involved in decisions that affect their lives.

He made this declaration at the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja.

Delivering his message through the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the President told pupils and students from primary and secondary schools in attendance that their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations are central to Nigeria’s future.

He described the assurance that “your opinion matters, your ideas matter, your well-being matters” not as mere rhetoric, but as a guiding principle for the country’s democratic renewal.

The event was held under the theme “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” and the President used the occasion to stress that inclusion must serve as the moral bedrock of national development.

He emphasised that no child whether from a remote community or an urban centre, physically challenged or socially vulnerable should feel overlooked or left behind.

Every child, he said, deserves equal access to quality education, healthcare, protection, nutrition, digital opportunities, and a sense of belonging.

Linking these ideals to concrete policy action, President Tinubu pointed to several programmes under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including the Renewed Hope Social Impact Intervention–774, Nutrition 774, ANRiN 2.0, and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), as evidence that children’s needs are being translated into actual budgetary commitments.

He also highlighted investments in STEM education and the Ministry of Education’s NEDI platform as tools to equip children with digital skills for the future.

On child protection, the President noted that while the Child Rights Act has been domesticated across the country, the federal government is currently reviewing both the Act and the National Child Policy to ensure they remain effective and up to date.

He added that through the 2025 Costed Action Plan, the government is backing its commitments with financial resources to tackle violence against children, child marriage, and female genital mutilation.

He further encouraged state governments to strengthen the Nigerian Children’s Parliament, describing it as a vital platform for nurturing leadership, civic engagement, and democratic participation among young Nigerians.

The President also urged children to steer clear of violence, cultism, substance abuse, cybercrime, and bullying, warning that such vices rob young people of their futures.

He encouraged them instead to embrace discipline, hard work, honesty, and patriotism, and to use technology responsibly.

In her welcome address, the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, represented by the Acting Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, Hajiya Mukhtar, said the FCT

Administration with support from UNICEF Nigeria is reinforcing community-based child protection structures, training social workers, and tightening oversight of homes and orphanages to safeguard children’s dignity and safety.

One of the most moving moments of the event came from Jessica Nufi, a student of Government Secondary School, Garki, Abuja, who delivered a passionate appeal to the government on behalf of children across the country.

She called for free and accessible quality education, stronger protection from insecurity and violence, and an end to early marriage, cultism, drug abuse, and environmental dangers.

Jessica painted a sobering picture of the realities many Nigerian children face daily, noting that poverty keeps millions out of school, while insecurity, early marriage, and social pressures continue to rob many children especially girls of their futures and sense of safety.

She appealed to governments at all levels to make education universally accessible, strengthen healthcare for children with special needs, and create safe environments in schools and public spaces

She also called for a Nigeria free from drugs, cultism, and environmental hazards one that the next generation could be proud to inherit.

Closing her speech with a pledge on behalf of Nigerian children, Jessica promised that if adults fulfilled their responsibilities, children would do their part by obeying their parents and teachers, studying hard, shunning vices, and becoming responsible leaders of tomorrow.

Her words were met with resounding applause from children, parents, and officials in attendance.

Deadly Shootout in Oyo as Security Forces Hunt Down Suspected Kidnappers and Rescue Captive

The Oyo State Police Command has announced that its officers, working alongside local hunters and other security agencies, killed three suspected kidnappers and freed a captive during a joint security operation in Otu, within the state’s Oke-Ogun region.

The announcement was made in an official statement on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.

The operation was triggered by a distress call received on May 25, 2026, from local hunters who had come under attack by suspected kidnappers while on a hunting expedition in Otu.

No casualties were recorded among the hunters during that initial confrontation.

A response team made up of police officers, local hunters, and other security personnel was promptly deployed to the area.

Upon arrival, the suspects opened fire on the team, resulting in a gun battle.

Through coordinated tactical action, the security forces overpowered the criminals, neutralising three of the suspected kidnappers.

During the operation, a kidnap victim identified as Mosudi Gbolagade, approximately 50 years old was rescued.

He had allegedly been abducted in Okaka and was being held in the Otu area. Gbolagade sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

One of the local hunters was also injured in the exchange of fire and is currently receiving hospital care.

Security operatives recovered an AK-47 rifle without ammunition, a single-barrel gun, and a machete from the scene.

The State Commissioner of Police commended the bravery of the local hunters and all security stakeholders involved in the rescue.

The command also reaffirmed its dedication to sustained operations against criminal activity across the state, while calling on residents to stay alert and share useful information with security agencies.

World Cup Fear as Messi Suffers Fresh Injury Scare Before Argentina Campaign

Lionel Messi is at the center of injury worries just weeks before the FIFA World Cup, after Inter Miami confirmed on Monday that medical evaluations revealed muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.

The MLS club gave no specific timeframe for the Argentine star’s recovery, following his sudden withdrawal during Miami’s 6-4 win against Philadelphia on Sunday, where he came off in the 73rd minute.

The 38-year-old was seen grabbing the back of his left leg before requesting a substitution, though he appeared to walk without difficulty as he headed to the dressing room.

In an official statement, Inter Miami said that further tests pointed to an overload linked to muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, and that his return to physical activity would depend on how well he progresses both clinically and functionally.

The update leaves much uncertainty surrounding the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s availability as Argentina gears up to defend their World Cup title at the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which begins on June 11.

The defending champions are scheduled to open their campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi’s playing time has been carefully managed, with the club often resting him during busy fixture stretches. MLS has since entered its World Cup break.

While Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation in the tournament, he is broadly expected to feature in what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.

Argentina’s squad announcement is expected next week, with the team set to play pre-tournament friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9 on American soil.

Midnight Horror in Kwara as Bandits Storm Emir Palace Kidnap Wives Children and Residents

Gunmen suspected to be bandits launched a terrifying midnight assault on Yashikira town in Kwara State’s Baruten Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday, May 25, 2026, carting away 10 people including three wives and four children of the local emir, Alhaji Umar Seriki.

According to eyewitness accounts shared online, the heavily armed men rode in on motorcycles around midnight, firing into the air as they stormed both the emir’s palace and a nearby police station at the same time.

Security personnel at the palace were overwhelmed, allowing the gunmen to break into the inner quarters of the royal residence.

One resident, who posted details from a phone call with his father still in the community, said people scattered in all directions as bullets rang out, with some sustaining injuries while fleeing.

Another local, Tukur Ahmed, confirmed the attackers went straight for the palace, seized the emir’s wives and children alongside other residents, torched several vehicles on the palace grounds worth millions of naira, and then fled into the night. The emir himself was reportedly not home at the time.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that while the attack on the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters was successfully repelled, 10 people were taken to an unknown location.

The Commissioner of Police has since activated a joint rescue operation involving the military, forest guards, vigilantes, and other agencies, who are now combing nearby forests and suspected hideouts.

Kwara North has seen a worrying surge in banditry in recent months, with armed groups escalating from isolated kidnappings to large-scale coordinated attacks on communities, highways, and security bases across Kaiama, Baruten, Edu, and Patigi LGAs.

One of the deadliest episodes occurred on February 3, 2026, when a massacre in Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama LGA shocked the region.

In a related development, the Chairman of Ekiti LGA in Kwara State, Gabriel Awelewa, has indefinitely banned night vigils in worship centres across the council, following a deadly attack on a church vigil near Ikerin-Opin in which three worshippers were killed and 15 others abducted.

Awelewa noted that the church had been warned repeatedly through the Christian Association of Nigeria and the League of Imams to stop holding isolated night services, but continued anyway.

Religious groups in outlying areas have now been directed to move services to community centres within towns, with daytime services capped at two hours.

“Faith cannot be practised at the expense of life,” he was quoted as saying, adding that the hilltop location of the church made it impossible for security forces to respond quickly when the attack happened.

The council says it will work with state authorities and security agencies to rescue the abducted worshippers and improve surveillance in vulnerable communities.

Doctors Raise Alarm as Dangerous Pregnancy Trend Puts Mothers and Babies at Risk

Medical experts specialising in maternal health are urging women who delivered via caesarean section (CS) to allow a minimum of 24 months before getting pregnant again, stressing that the surgical scar on the womb requires sufficient time to heal fully before it can safely support another pregnancy.

The gynaecologists, who spoke to a health publication, cautioned that conceiving too quickly after a CS delivery puts both mother and baby at serious risk.

Potential complications include a weakened uterine scar, anaemia, excessive bleeding after delivery, poor foetal growth, premature birth, and in the worst cases, stillbirth.

Women with a CS history are medically considered high-risk, even if they appear to be coping well outwardly.

The experts also took aim at misleading social media trends, urging women to rely only on medically verified information rather than viral content that could endanger their health.

This comes against the backdrop of a growing online trend known as “two-under-two,” where mothers have children in very rapid succession a pattern doctors say could worsen Nigeria’s already alarming maternal mortality rates.

A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Uyo, Prof. Aniekan Abasiattai, explained that the incision made in the womb during a CS must heal completely before any subsequent pregnancy.

If it doesn’t, the scar risks rupturing during a future labour a life-threatening emergency.

He added that no obstetrician would permit a woman to attempt vaginal delivery if she had not adequately spaced her pregnancies after a CS, meaning she would automatically face another surgical delivery.

Beyond the scar, he warned that closely spaced pregnancies also raise the chances of anaemia, gestational diabetes, placenta complications, and severe postpartum bleeding.

Women who are already anaemic, he noted, are particularly vulnerable to haemorrhage after delivery.

He also pointed out that women need time after childbirth to shed the weight gained during pregnancy roughly 12.5 kilograms on average before their bodies are ready to carry another baby safely.

Prof. Abubakar Panti of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, described short birth intervals as a significant public health concern in Nigeria.

He stressed that women should ideally allow at least 24 months between a birth and the next pregnancy, which effectively means maintaining about three years between children.

He also flagged the added burden on breastfeeding mothers who fall pregnant too soon, warning that the physical demand of simultaneously nursing an infant and carrying a new pregnancy can lead to preterm birth, restricted foetal growth, low birth weight, and even newborn death.

Prof. Panti identified poor uptake of contraception, cultural pressure to have children quickly, and late marriages as key drivers of dangerously short birth spacing in Nigeria.

He acknowledged that some women with fertility concerns may intentionally avoid spacing pregnancies out of fear that their fertility will decline with age but stressed that this reasoning does not outweigh the medical risks.

Both experts called on healthcare providers to make postpartum family planning counselling a standard part of care for every woman who gives birth, rather than treating it as an optional conversation.

They also urged the media and health workers to step up public awareness campaigns on the dangers of short birth intervals, particularly for CS mothers.
