Dismiss Three Opposition Parties’ Petitions Against Me – Tinubu Begs Tribunal

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Bola Tinubu has asked the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) to dismiss petitions filed by three opposition parties challenging his victory in the February 25 election.
NAN reports that the APC called on the tribunal to discountenance the petitions in three separate responses filed at PEPC’s Secretariat, Sunday night by Thomas Ojo, a member of the party’s legal team led by Lateef Fagbemi, in Abuja.
The three political parties: Action People’s Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM), had, in separate petitions, challenged the emergence of Tinubu as Nigeria’s President-elect.
AA, in the petition, sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu, APC and Hamza Al-Mustapha, its factional presidential candidate and former CSO to late General Sani Abacha.
APM, in its petition, joined Tinubu, Kashim Shettima, INEC, APC and Kabir Masari, who stood as a vice-presidential placeholder during the primaries before he was substituted with Shettima.
APP dragged INEC, APC and Tinubu to court as respondents.
In the suits, marked CA/PEPC/01/2023, CA/PEPC/04/2023 and CA/PEPC/02/2023, AA, APM and APP are respectively challenging the result of the presidential poll on the grounds of alleged substantial non-compliance with the electoral laws of Nigeria, as well as the INEC guidelines.
Responding, the APC faulted the claims by the political parties.
Meanwhile, the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party (LP) ‘s counterpart, Peter Obi, are also challenging the election outcome.
Tinubu and Shettima, the Vice-President-elect, are, however, within time to respond to all the petitions by the political parties.
However, based on provisions of the law, a respondent has twenty-one days to reply to a petition after a service.

JAMB announces new date for 2023 UTME

A new date for the beginning of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) has been announced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Dr Fabian Benjamin, the Head of Public Affairs and Protocol made the announcement in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.

According to the board, the UTME previously scheduled to commence on April 29, will now start on April 25, 2023. Additionally, the board has rescheduled its mock UTME to take place on April 18, 2023.

Statement on New Date for UTME

”It would be recalled that JAMB had earlier conducted its 2023 Mock-UTME on Thursday, March 30 in 725 centres across the country.

” However, the exercise ran into some technical hitches in some centres, thereby denying some candidates the opportunity to sit for the examination.

” The board’s mock examination was designed for the purpose of testing its preparedness and that of its partners for the UTME as well as give prospective candidates the opportunity to have hands-on experience of the CBT test environment.

”It is, therefore, in order to give those candidates, who were unable to sit for the examination owing to no fault of theirs, the opportunity to take the examination that the mock examination had been rescheduled to hold on Tuesday, April 18.”

According to Dr Fabian Benjamin, candidates who underwent screening for the examination but were unable to take it will now take the mock examination on April 18.

Benjamin also confirmed that the results of candidates who participated in the mock examination on March 30 have been released.

”By so doing, the board hopes that no citizen will be denied the opportunity of exercising their civic responsibilities.

” It should be noted that the board does not have the liberty of shifting forward its examination as other public examinations are billed to commence their exercises in the early part of May 2023.

“Yet another factor is the need to accommodate those institutions with stable academic calendar to resume as scheduled,” he added.

I Paid Crazy Money As Ransom For My Father’s Release From Kidnappers’ Den – Mikel Obi Reveals

John Obi Mikel, the former Nigerian and Chelsea midfielder, has made a disclosure about his father’s release from kidnappers.

He disclosed that he paid some “crazy amount of money” to get his dad, Pa Michael, out of the kidnapper’s den in 2018.

The football star made this known while speaking with Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport.

His father, Pa Michael Obi was kidnapped along with his driver, Ishaya John, along the Markurdi – Enugu road in 2018 while on their way from Jos in a grey coloured Toyota Prado jeep.

Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, had in 2018 said he was informed about his father’s kidnap about four hours before Nigeria’s final World Cup match against Argentina.

Mikel noted that he received the shocking news while travelling on the team bus to the stadium in St Petersburg.

According to him, a family member had called and told him that he had to call the kidnappers on a designated number. After he did so, he was ordered to pay a ransom.

He further explained that although he was distraught by the news, he had to put it aside and play the match.

“I was emotionally distraught and I had to make the decision about whether I was mentally ready to play. I was confused. I did not know what to do but, in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down. I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff and only a very tight circle of my friends knew.

“I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody. I also did not want to discuss it with the coach [Gernot Rohr] because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to him or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game. As much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not,” he said.

However, days after, they were rescued by the police, around 2:30 pm in Egede Udi forest of Enugu State.

“The abductors then started calling the families to demand a ransom of N10 million but the operatives acting on intelligence information swooped on them. A gun duel ensued which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued,” the police said in a statement.

Mikel Obi who bravely led the Super Eagles against Argentina four hours after he spoke with the kidnappers who kidnapped his father.

“They [the kidnappers] said listen, we know, it is Mikel he would pay. If he doesn’t, we are going to shoot his dad. They said they had nothing to lose. They would shoot my dad and dump him somewhere,” Mikel Obi said.

“It was horrible. After the game, I got back on the phone, tried to negotiate with them and spoke with them. They were calling some ridiculous amount of money for a start, and in the end, I still had to pay some crazy amount of money to get my dad out.

“Even now, I still go through it. Even when I got a flashback, I had to speak to the guys on the phone. There was a gunpoint at his head. They said they would shoot him, kill him. I have not told my kids about it, but a few months ago, they looked at my phone and saw the news about it. Obviously, I have not told them about it because they are young kids, 7 years, but one day when they grow up, I will be able to share the story with them,” he said.

I Was Popular But Didn’t Have Money – Singer, 9ice Reveals

Alexander Adegbola Akande, the popular Nigerian singer, who is better known as 9ice, has made a new revelation.

He revealed that when he started his music career he was famous but broke.

The ‘Gongo Aso’ crooner disclosed this in the latest episode of Chart with Sims podcast.

He said, “Don’t become popular o, make money. When I started, I was popular but I didn’t have money.”

He added that money finally started coming after he put in works.

9ice said, “The money didn’t just come in, I had to do the right thing. As at then we were depending so much on Alaba International Market. Then we didn’t have Facebook, Instagram and the rest. If you want your song to be popular in Kaduna, you have to go to Kaduna to do a radio interview. You have to be there for people to see you.”

“So, when the money started coming was when we put in the hustle and we marketed the brand by doing print interviews like newspapers, magazines; putting your face out there. I mean, there are sometimes people have good songs and they [fans] don’t even know what you look like.

“I think it is not just about getting popular. But putting your brand out there. Market it, promote it. Let your face be known and the money aspect will come later,” he added.

I Drank Strong Alcohol, Went To Graveyard To Play Role In ‘Gangs Of Lagos’ – Tobi Bakre Reveals

Tobi Bakre, the former Big Brother Naija reality show star and actor, has talked about how he got fit for his recent movie role.

He revealed that he did all manner of gritty stuff to fit in his role in ‘Gangs of Lagos’, a feisty crime thriller.

Tobi played Obalola, a street King (Eleniyi – the owner of men) who started up nondescript with a childhood nested with scars of little beginning.

He said it was his first time playing a lead character, and the first time he really let himself go to embody a character.

He featured in the recent episode of Menisms audiovisual podcast.

Tobi said, “For ‘Gangs of Lagos’, that was challenging because like for the first time… you know as guys now, we build so many walls like you are ready for all the possible sad outcomes in life mentally. Like you don’t know it but… I was now playing the role of a strong guy but then in the same movie, he had moments when he had to be vulnerable. Bro, I had the toughest time. I had to tear my walls down.

“You know those plastic [herbal bitters] drinks na? I drank two within the space of five minutes. I just felt like I drank water because I didn’t feel anything. I was listening to the saddest music. This is the song I always remember from Gangs of Lagos, Celia song by Tiwa Savage. It is a very emotional song. I wasn’t trying to fake it [my role]. I needed to be actually sad, I needed to be there. So, I was putting myself in the scenario of this character.

“I was self-reflecting. There was a graveyard right in front of where we were shooting. So my head was in different places. And eventually, we shot that scene. After we shot it, and they said ‘cut’, everyone stayed quiet. And people in the background were sobbing. It was almost as if for that moment everybody forgot that we were acting and some people were actually tearing up.”

The ex-TV reality star said he rolled on the floor and rubbed sand on his face to fit into the role.

He, however, said his challenging task was the character’s vulnerability.

He revealed that he struggled to leave the character for a while after the movie.

Tobi said, “It [the character] leads sometimes like my wife now when I got home initially… Hardly, anger is the last emotion you can get but my fuss became shorter. On the road I’m driving, my fuss is a bit shorter because of this character I’m currently infusing. So, after the whole thing I had to just ease out.”

‘Gangs of Lagos’, produced and directed by Jade Osiberu, is the first African Original for video streaming platform, Amazon Prime.

The movie follows the story of three friends: Obalola (Tobi Bakre), Gift (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) and Ify (Chike-Ezekpeazu Osebuka), who each have to navigate their own destiny, growing up on the rough and bustling streets of Isale Eko, Lagos.

It hit the screens on April 7, 2023.
