Tax System Requires Trust, Transparency – Peter Obi Reacts To Nigeria-France MoU

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has stated that reforming Nigeria’s tax system hinges on trust and transparency.

Obi made the statement via his verified X handle on Wednesday, in reaction to recent reports concerning a tax cooperation Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, between Nigeria and France.

He said that while international collaboration is not inherently objectionable, agreements relating to tax administration, revenue systems, and data management demand a high level of openness because of their direct impact on public trust.

“It is therefore worrisome that an agreement of this significance appears to have been concluded without the full terms being made public, and without a clear effort to explain its objectives, scope, and expected outcomes to Nigerians. Transparency is essential in matters that directly affect public revenue and institutional credibility.

“That said, I am not opposed to engaging foreign expertise. However, such engagements must be clearly justified, with a transparent explanation of the specific gaps they are intended to fill, why those gaps cannot be addressed locally, and, above all, the concrete benefits to Nigerians.

“This is especially important because Nigeria is not lacking in tax expertise. The country has a strong pool of qualified tax professionals, advisory firms, and globally recognised consultancies already operating locally, with the capacity to support tax reform and modernisation.

“In light of this, it is reasonable for Nigerians to question why external partnerships are made a priority instead of strengthening and leveraging existing local capacity. Sustainable reform should build institutions from within.

“These concerns arise at a time of significant economic strain. Over 60 per cent of Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty. Youth unemployment remains widespread. Small and medium-scale enterprises are burdened by multiple taxes, while government borrowing continues to rise without commensurate gains in productivity.

“In such circumstances, policy attention should focus on simplifying the tax system, closing revenue leakages, broadening the tax base fairly, and ensuring prudent use of public resources.

“Any agreement or policy initiative that lacks transparency, public confidence, and clearly defined, measurable benefits risks further eroding trust in government. It is therefore imperative that the Federal Government publishes the full MoU, clearly explains its rationale, and outlines the mutual benefits—particularly the tangible advantages Nigeria stands to gain.

“Leadership demands openness, accountability, and commitment to the interests of the Nigerian people. Decisions of this nature must always be guided by what best serves the nation,” he wrote.

Nigerian TikToker, Jarvis Confirms Breakup With Peller, Appeals Against Mockery

TikTok content creator Elizabeth Amadou, popularly known as Jarvis, has confirmed the end of her relationship with fellow influencer and livestreamer Hamzat Habeeb, known as Peller. She also urged the public to stop mocking him in the wake of his recent car crash during a live broadcast.

Jarvis made the disclosure in a live video shared online on Tuesday amid widespread reactions to Peller’s hospitalisation after the incident on the Lekki‑Epe Expressway in Lagos.

Addressing online commentary surrounding the crash and the couple’s relationship, Jarvis said public ridicule was exacerbating an already painful situation.

“It’s always people will mock me. Because I can see concern about this online. People will mock him, stop mocking him. Stop shading him,”
she said.

She stressed that the incident should not be used to define Peller’s character, insisting she never portrayed him as a bad person.

Acknowledging Peller’s emotional challenges, Jarvis described his struggle with emotional control as the core issue rather than malice.

“Yes, he cannot control his emotions. He cannot control. That’s the problem. I can control mine, but he can’t control his. We need to join hands together to help him,” she said.

Confirming that they are no longer together, Jarvis said the breakup was necessary and should not be misconstrued as abandonment.

“Peller is a sweet guy, I do not even want it to even end but it has happened, it has happened,” she said.

Jarvis emphasised that the focus should now be on supporting Peller’s wellbeing and healing.

“The relationship is not the thing now. It’s not saying let’s go back to who we were. The solution is let’s put our heads together to work on him. To be better. Not space of we not talking, it is space of this relationship thing. It is over for now,”
she said.

She explained that the separation was intended to give space for healing and urged supporters and social media users to desist from harmful narratives.

“Stop your shading. How is it helping? It’s not helping. Don’t use it against him. Encourage him. Encourage us. Help us. Stop using our pain to mock us,”
she added.

Expressing emotional distress, Jarvis said the online reactions had deepened the pain surrounding the situation.

Jarvis urged the public to be thankful that no life was lost in the crash and to prioritise wellbeing.

“All you people should be saying is thank God for life. Thank God for Peller. Thank God nothing happened to him.

“I love him, but for now we need to be okay. I’m not okay anymore. I want to be okay. He needs to be okay, he needs to be fine,” she said.

She concluded by noting that breakups do not always stem from hatred but sometimes from a need for clarity and calm.

Earlier, 626Blaze reported that Peller sparked concern on Sunday after crashing his car during an Instagram livestream titled “RIP Peller” on the Lekki‑Epe Expressway.

In the footage, Peller was seen alone in his newly acquired Mercedes‑Benz, visibly distressed and crying during a phone conversation believed to be with Jarvis amid rumours of a breakup.

At several points during the broadcast, he appeared agitated and made alarming statements, including, “I will use this car and have an accident right now,” and later, “I’m scared. I’m scared.”

In a particularly worrying moment, he said, “If you break up with me, people will be mocking me… Thank you, I’m going to kill myself.”

Moments later, the vehicle was seen veering off the road before crashing into a stone barrier.

Subsequent videos circulating online showed Peller being assisted by bystanders before he was taken to a hospital.

I Bypassed NFF And Called Buhari For 2018 World Cup Bonus – Mikel Obi Reveals

John Obi Mikel, a former Super Eagles captain, has revealed that he reached out to the office of then-President Muhammadu Buhari, through his Chief of Staff Abba Kyari, to secure the players’ bonuses for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, following months of delays by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Mikel said the intervention led to the delivery of millions of dollars in cash via a private jet to the team’s hotel, just days into the tournament.

The former Chelsea midfielder disclosed this on his Obi One Podcast, released on Tuesday, where he criticised the NFF over persistent failures in handling players’ welfare and bonus payments.

He explained that FIFA releases what is known as parachute money ahead of major tournaments, which federations typically use, sometimes through borrowing, to pay players’ bonuses before being reimbursed.

“Talking about fighting for players’ bonuses, I went above the president of the NFF to get those bonuses, which is what I did a couple of times during the World Cup,” Mikel said.

“Leading up to the World Cup, we were owed money.

“We had been asking for this money for months before the tournament. They kept telling me, ‘Oh, Mikel, don’t worry, the money will be sorted when you come to camp.’ I said, ‘Okay, no problem, but make sure the money is there because the players are asking me about their bonuses, and I have to make sure these bonuses are there when we arrive.

“We got to camp, and I spoke to the team secretary and the president. I asked, ‘Where is the money?’ Again, they said, ‘Don’t worry, Mikel, we’ll sort it out.’

“A week went by. The players kept coming to me saying, ‘Mikel, we need this money. Once the World Cup is over, we don’t know if we’ll ever get it.’”

Mikel said the situation worsened after arrival in camp, with players repeatedly approaching him over fears they might never receive their bonuses once the tournament ended. With no solution in sight, Mikel said he contacted Abba Kyari, who was then Chief of Staff to President Buhari.

“I called him and said, ‘Mr Chief of Staff, we have a serious issue in the national team. We need this money to settle the players. This is what was promised.’”

“24 hours later, a private plane arrived. The money was delivered to the hotel, hand to hand. Millions of dollars,”
he said.

“I took the money and handed it to the team secretary and told him to hold it. I said, ‘Make sure this money does not go to the president or anyone else; I don’t want to leave it in my room. This money belongs to the players.’”

Mikel said his actions angered senior officials, including the then NFF president, who summoned him to a meeting two days later. He added he attended the meeting aware of the tensions and faced what he described as the “whole cabal” without fear.

His words, “They said, ‘Mikel, why did you do this? You’ve made us look like idiots; we don’t know what we’re doing or our job.’

“I said, ‘Are you serious? I’ve been asking you for this money for months.’

“I gave you the benefit of the doubt, I respected you, and I didn’t want to go above you from the start, which I could have done.

“When you fail, I have to take responsibility because my players need the f**king money,” Mikel said. “This money is owed. It is not a favour.”

Mikel also questioned the circumstances surrounding William Troost-Ekong’s recent retirement from international football, saying it was uncharacteristic and likely driven by unresolved internal issues.

“You cannot have your leader, Captain, retire two weeks before a major tournament; you cannot have that happen. There’s something going on there that has not been made public right now. I know Troost-Ekong very well; he’s not the guy that quit; he’s very passionate and loves his country. I was there when the young Ekong came into the national team, and I know he’s still passionate.

“For him to retire three weeks before the tournament [AFCON], there’s something ongoing. Even if he’s not a starter or playing anymore, as a leader, someone that I know, he’s not the selfish guy who says, ‘I have to be on the pitch.’ I believe he’s the leader that helps the young guys.”

Beyond the 2018 bonus saga, Mikel also criticised the current state of Nigerian football administration, insisting meaningful progress would be impossible without changes at the NFF.

“If Nigerian football must go forward, they [NFF] have to go. It’s crazy that we’re killing the talent and potential that we have in this country just because of greed from people that don’t want to do the right thing, that don’t want to get football back to where it should be. People that don’t have an idea of how to treat players grow the football in our country,”he said.

Stay Back And Build Your Country – Shehu Sani Reacts Following US New Visa Ban

Former lawmaker and ex-representative of the Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has called on African leaders to stay at home and focus on rebuilding their countries.

Sani made the call on Wednesday in a post on his verified X handle, following the recent visa ban imposed by the United States Government on some African countries.

Earlier, 626Blaze reported that United States President Donald Trump signed a new proclamation further restricting the entry of foreign nationals into the country, adding 15 more nations to the list facing partial travel limitations.

Reacting, the former lawmaker said, “They said the first visa ban focused on those who engage in acts of religious persecution, and many jubilated on social media. The second visa restriction is for everyone and Nigeria is listed among 23 others.

“The recent list has no Arab countries but mostly Black Africans and Caribbeans even though safety and security was used as the basis.

“The message is very clear. Third World migrants are not welcomed. Stay back and build your country or deal with your problems.”

The newly added countries include Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Proclamation continues full restrictions on the original 12 high-risk countries: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

2025 AFCON: What Late Stephen Keshi Told Me About Corruption In Team Selection – Mikel

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has disclosed what the late former Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, told him regarding corruption in the team selection process.

Mikel made the disclosure while drawing a comparison between Keshi’s squad and Nigeria’s team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

According to Mikel, Keshi told him that highly placed individuals attempted to influence his selection, but the late coach resisted the pressure and selected players purely on merit.

“I remember the late Stephen Keshi when he wanted to make his World Cup selection, called me up and say Mikel, I want to make the squad but these f****s keep calling me trying to influence my decision,”
Mikel said on his Obi One Podcast.

“They say I have to pick this player but you know me, I will always do what’s right and I will pick the players that I think deserve and will go and help this country do well in the World Cup.”

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles already have 25 players in camp as preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations intensify in Egypt.

Nigeria are scheduled to face Egypt in a friendly match on Tuesday before travelling to neighbouring Morocco for the tournament.

The Super Eagles will play Tanzania, Uganda and Tunisia in Group C of the AFCON.

Nigeria’s campaign begins against Tanzania on December 23, followed by matches against Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda on December 30.

Peller Car Crash: Roads Are Not Filming Locations – FRSC Issues Fresh Warning

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned celebrities, social media influencers, and content creators against using public roads for online content creation, describing the practice as both dangerous and illegal.

The Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, raised the alarm after a video went viral showing a popular TikTok, Peller, live-streaming while driving which led to a road crash.

Mohammed said using a phone to record, stream or create content while driving distracts drivers and puts the lives of passengers and other road users at serious risk. He stressed that such behaviour is a clear violation of traffic laws.

He directed the Lagos state sector commander to begin legal action against anyone involved in reckless driving, phone use while driving or any form of distracted driving, in line with existing laws.

The FRSC boss also called on actors’ guilds, entertainment groups and influencer communities to educate their members on safe and responsible driving.

“Celebrities and influencers have a strong influence on young people and should promote safety, not dangerous behaviour,”
he said.

Mohammed warned that the FRSC would enforce the law against anyone found breaking traffic rules, regardless of their social status. He added that no social media trend or online popularity is worth a human life.

He reminded Nigerians that roads are not filming locations but shared public spaces meant to protect lives. He also urged citizens to report dangerous driving.

Petrol Marketers Begin Implementing Fuel Price Drop Nationwide – IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has announced that its members will begin implementing Dangote Refinery’s latest fuel price reduction from Tuesday through next week.

IPMAN spokesperson, Chinedu Ukadike disclosed this to DAILY POST exclusively, noting that Nigerians would start feeling the impact of the fuel price cut.

This comes as Dangote Refinery last cut its gantry by N129 to N699 per liter from N828.

Aliko Dangote on Sunday said, following his gantry price drop, Nigerians ought to be paying for petrol at N740 per liter.

“So from Tuesday and next week, you will see the reactions and the dividends of this reduction in petroleum price,”
he said.

Speaking on the renewed feud between Dangote and the chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, he said that both need to collaborate for the benefit of Nigerians.

“But I also believe that NMDPRA and Dangote should collaborate to ensure that there is a steady supply of petroleum products and to enable the masses to enjoy the benefits of this reduced price,”
he appealed.

A Daily Post market survey on Monday showed that Bovas filling station in Abuja’s Wuse Zone 6 had crashed its retail fuel price to N865 per liter, down from N910 earlier on Monday.

Empire Energy, Ranoil in Gwarimpa, Abuja, have adjusted their pump to 912 and 910 per liter.

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NIPCO) and AA Rano filling stations in Abuja dispense petrol as of Monday night at N915, N905, and N910 per liter, respectively.

The MRS retail price remained unchanged at N910 per liter but may come down from Tuesday.
