Olamide Adedeji, the popular Nigerian rapper and music executive, who is simply known as Olamide, has opened up on why he didn’t sign singer Omah Lay to his YBNL Nation label.
The YBNL boss said he wanted to sign Omah Lay in the early days of his career, but the singer informed him that he already had a contract with another label.
Baddo, as he is fondly called, disclosed this in an interview with British-Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide, aka Shopsydoo.
Olamide said, “Somebody sent me Omah Lay’s song, ‘Bad Influence,’ I had to like search for him on Instagram. I messaged him that I want to sign him but he told me that he got a [recording] deal already.”
The rapper also revealed that he was depressed for about four years after running out of hit songs.
He, however, said he got his “swag back” after releasing hits like ‘Wo’ and ‘Motigbana.’
“Till date, songs like WO, MOTIGBANA, are like magic to me. I thought I could never get myself again. I was going crazy,” he said.
Olamide, one of Nigeria’s most successful and popular rappers, has revealed that ‘Sapa’ inspired his record label YBNL Nation, adding he didn’t want to spend unnecessarily and extravagantly.
The artiste decided to reinvest into the music business for wealth recycling.
The YBNL boss, who has signed artistes like Lil Kesh, Fireboy DML, Adekunle Gold, Viktoh, Davolee and several others, revealed in an interview with Nandi Madida of Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio, how he decided to make it his passion for music a business.
Speaking to the host, he said: “The world was in love with my stuff, (and) I was grateful for that. But, I also felt it was time to make sure I reinvested in that same thing that was making people love and appreciate me. It used to be just about passion, but I figured it was high time I stepped up, reinvested and made it a proper business.
“I set up my own record label and started signing artistes because I did not want all that money to just go wasting on ‘ballin’ (having fun). All that money had to go back into the business. That was how the whole thing started.”
Talking about his forthcoming ‘Unruly’ tour, the YBNL CEO said: “I think the last time I was on stage was last year at Mr Money (Asake)’s concert in London, United Kingdom. But, this December, I will be having my concert in Nigeria. Also, I will be going on tour next summer to the United States of America and Europe. I am going to be back on the road.
“My fans have been asking me to ‘come outside’. And now, I am ready. I have been on the ground, trying to put in work and get my stuff together, because the new wave is so crazy right now, and one has to figure out a way to be in tune with the times, which is not easy. So, I have been working on that for so long. That’s why it took me so long.”

Nigerian musician, Skales has shared how his senior colleague, Olamide rescued him financially after he left Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).
Skales revealed in a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo that he became homeless and broke after EME refused to renew his contract due to the label’s inability to make profits from him.
He said Olamide called him and asked if he wasn’t going to shoot a video for his song ‘Shake Body.’
Skales however, replied that he was broke and homeless. Olamide sent him money for the video shoot, after which the song became a success.
He said: “My deal with them was done and they refused to continue because I wasn’t doing well at that time.
“Olamide contacted me and said he loved one of my songs, Shake Body, and asked if I wasn’t going to shoot the video. I told him I was homeless and couldn’t possibly shoot a video and he sent me money. My God turned my life around after that video shoot”

Olamide, the popular indigenous rapper has talked about a really embarrassing moment.
The rapper shared an incident that left him utterly pissed and embarrassed at the same time.
The incident, he explained, happened many years ago when he was still under his one-time boss, ID Cabasa.
Recounting the embarrassing moment, Baddo said: “I was in the studio when this senior artiste came in to record a song, and he said he was hungry. Who else will he send to buy food if not me who was the youngest in the studio?
“The money he gave me was not enough for his meal, so I decided to add my own money. I even used my money to pay for transportation.
“When I got back to the studio with the food, guess what this guy said to me? “Cabasa, tell this your boy to give me my change. If he wants money, he should tell me and I will give him. He should not use a trick to steal my money.
“I almost got angry, but one look from ID Cabasa calmed me down. Today, the guy is one of my biggest fans and he is planning to do a song with me.”
Pheelz, a Nigerian music producer/singer, has revealed that he convinced Olamide to sign Adekunle Gold to YBNL.
