BREAKING: There’s No Going Back, New Tax Laws Will Commence On January 1, 2026 – Tinubu Says

President Bola Tinubu has announced that the new tax laws will take effect as scheduled on January 1, 2026, despite objections from various quarters.

The President made the declaration in a statement on Tuesday in which he explained that the new laws are not designed to raise taxes but to drive harmonization.

President Tinubu noted that his administration is aware of agitations in some quarters over the new tax laws, but added that no substantial issue has been raised to warrant a suspension of the implementation process.

He promised that the government would ensure due process in the implementation of the laws and work with all stakeholders, including the National Assembly, to resolve all identified issues against the new tax laws.

“The new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned.

“These reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country.

“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract.

“I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage.

“Our administration is aware of the public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws.

“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures.

“I emphasise our administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws. The Presidency pledges to work with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any issue identified.

“I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” the statement read.

Nollywood Actress, Sarah Martins Exposes Staff Who Stole ₦3 Million From Her Bank Account (Video)

Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has accused a newly hired staff member of making unauthorized transfers totaling ₦3 million from her account, an incident she detailed in a video shared online.

In the video, Martins said she employed a 20-year-old man as her videographer and business sales manager about two weeks earlier.

She claimed that ₦2 million was transferred from her Zenith Bank account on December 22, followed by another ₦1 million shortly after.

According to Martins, she initially suspected a banking error when she noticed the first transaction and did not immediately link it to the staff member. She explained that the transfer allegedly occurred during a high-profile event she attended earlier in the month, which delayed her suspicion.

The actress, who appeared visibly distressed in the video as bystanders tried to calm her down, later apologised publicly to Zenith Bank for initially doubting the institution. She commended the bank for what she described as its swift response and detection of irregular activity.

Martins also said the experience has made her more cautious about future hires, especially as she continues to engage in charity and business activities.

It is important to note that the claims were made solely in the video shared by the actress, and no official confirmation or court ruling has been issued regarding the alleged theft.

EPL: Arsenal thump Aston Villa 4-1 to finish year five points clear

Arsenal produced a ruthless second-half display to dismantle Aston Villa 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium, closing out the year firmly in control of the Premier League title race with a five-point cushion at the summit.

The contest was delicately poised at the interval, but Mikel Arteta’s side shifted through the gears after the break, exposing Villa’s resistance and underlining their growing authority as genuine frontrunners.

Second-half surge breaks Villa resistance

The breakthrough arrived three minutes after the restart when Gabriel Magalhaes, making his first start since returning from injury, forced the ball home from close range following another well-worked Arsenal corner. Despite Villa protests over a potential foul on Emiliano Martinez, the goal stood.

Arsenal quickly seized control. Martin Odegaard’s aggressive press in midfield led to the second goal as he teed up Martin Zubimendi, who calmly poked past Martinez to double the advantage and tilt the game decisively in the hosts’ favour.

Goals flow as Arsenal take control

Leandro Trossard made it 3-0 with a precise low finish from the edge of the area, after a lengthy VAR check confirmed he was onside.

Substitute Gabriel Jesus then added further gloss with a curling strike late on, before Ollie Watkins bundled in a stoppage-time consolation for Villa.

Unai Emery’s side, who arrived on an 11-game winning run and had beaten Arsenal earlier in the month, showed early intent but ultimately lacked the cutting edge to trouble a composed and clinical home side.

The victory caps an outstanding year for Arsenal, who have lost just twice in the league and now sit five points clear ahead of second-placed Manchester City who although, have a game in hand.

Man United 1 Wolves 1: Zirkzee scores, but familiar flaws cost United again

Manchester United’s inability to manage games resurfaced at Old Trafford as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves, gifting the visitors only their third point of the season and squandering a clear opportunity to climb the Premier League table.

Joshua Zirkzee marked a year since his lowest moment at the club by scoring the opener, but his goal – deflected and unconvincing, did little to mask another disjointed United performance that showed lingering structural issues under Ruben Amorim.

Zirkzee moment fails to change narrative

Zirkzee’s opener in the 27th minute came after sustained pressure, with the striker benefiting from a deflection following Ayden Heaven’s driving run into the box.

It was a rare positive moment, but not a transformative one.

Despite the goal, United remained laboured and predictable in possession. Zirkzee, starting more through seniority than form, struggled to impose himself and was eventually substituted.

This drew a reaction from the crowd that underlined his uncertain standing at the club after a modest return since arriving.

Tactical choices hand Wolves control

Amorim’s decision to revert to a back three against Wolves’ matching system played directly into the visitors’ hands. Wolves were comfortable without the ball and repeatedly exposed United’s inability to break down compact shapes.

Wolves grew in confidence as the half progressed and were rewarded just before the break when Ladislav Krejci guided a header home from a corner, punishing United’s poor defensive organisation yet again.

Another missed opportunity compounds concerns

United improved marginally after switching shape in the second half, but Wolves continued to create the clearer chances.

Late pressure failed to yield a winner for United, with a disallowed goal in stoppage time summing up a frustrating night.

EPL: Defensive lapses cost Chelsea in 2-2 draw against Bournemouth

Chelsea’s struggles for consistency continued at Stamford Bridge as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth, dropping points for a third successive Premier League match despite racing into a first-half lead.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez were cancelled out by defensive errors that once again exposed the Blues, particularly from set-piece situations, leaving Enzo Maresca’s side with growing questions to answer.

Chaotic opening defines the contest

Bournemouth took the lead inside six minutes after Chelsea failed to deal with a long throw, allowing David Brooks to convert from close range after Robert Sanchez parried his initial effort back into danger. The goal set the tone for a frantic opening spell.

Chelsea responded quickly. Palmer levelled from the penalty spot following a VAR review that ruled Antoine Semenyo had fouled Estevao.

Eight minutes later, Fernandez completed the turnaround with a superb strike from the edge of the area, briefly putting the hosts in control.

Set-piece weakness proves costly

Chelsea’s advantage did not last. Another long throw caused confusion in the box, with a defensive header looping to the back post where Justin Kluivert was left unmarked to tap home and restore parity for Bournemouth.

Fernandez later missed a clear chance to win the game, firing over after Neto’s cross fell kindly to him, while Bournemouth wasted a late opportunity of their own through Enes Unal.

Pressure builds as form dips

Despite late pressure, Chelsea could not find a winner and were forced to settle for a point, following a draw with Newcastle and defeat to Aston Villa. Their last league victory remains the December 13 win over Everton.

The pattern is increasingly familiar: attacking quality offset by defensive fragility. Until that imbalance is corrected, Chelsea’s momentum will continue to stall.

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles seal perfect group stage with 3-1 win over Uganda

Nigeria booked a flawless group-stage finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 3-1 victory over Uganda, reinforcing their status as one of the tournament’s most efficient performers.

Already qualified before kick-off, the Super Eagles combined squad rotation with ruthless execution to close Group C with maximum points and clear momentum heading into the knockout rounds.

Head coach Eric Chelle rang the changes but kept his team aggressive and structured.

Nigeria lined up in an attacking 4-4-2, pairing Victor Osimhen with Paul Onuachu, while debutant Ryan Alebiosu earned his first start at right-back.

Despite the changes, Nigeria’s intent was unmistakable: dominate possession, apply pressure, and finish clinically.

Uganda start brightly

Uganda, needing a win to stay alive, showed early ambition. They pressed high, moved the ball confidently, and created problems through Mutyaba’s midfield control and Mato’s wide deliveries. Nigeria initially absorbed the pressure before asserting control.

Onuachu breaks the deadlock

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute. After missing an earlier chance, Onuachu capitalised on a well-worked move, finishing from close range after a composed assist from Dele-Bashiru. The goal shifted momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favour.

Uganda’s challenge collapsed early in the second half when goalkeeper Jamal Salim was sent off for handling outside the box while trying to stop Osimhen through on goal.

The dismissal left Uganda a man down and stripped them of any realistic control.

Onyedika takes over as Uganda pull one back

Nigeria wasted no time. Raphael Onyedika doubled the lead in the 62nd minute, calmly converting after being released by Samuel Chukwueze.

Five minutes later, he completed his brace, finishing another Chukwueze assist to make it 3-0 and effectively kill the contest.

Uganda salvaged some pride when Mato pulled one back with a delicate finish following an Okello pass, but the goal had no bearing on the outcome. Nigeria managed the closing stages with composure and control.

The win sealed top spot in Group C with nine points, marking only the second time Nigeria have completed an AFCON group stage with a 100 percent record. Tunisia finished second after drawing with Tanzania.
