Mr. Peter Obi,the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 general elections, has said the security crisis ravaging the Southeast region can only be tackled if the leaders are united.
The former Anambra governor stated this in a message he delivered during the Southeast Summit on Economy and Security, in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
According to Obi, the people of the Southeast, who are predominantly businessmen, have gradually lost their sources of income due to criminal activities perpetrated by hoodlums in the zone.
The LP presidential candidate, whose message was aired at the summit, urged the leaders of the Southeast to come together and speak up on ways to end the embarrassing insecurity in the region.
He said, “This summit which is focusing merely on security and its economic impact on the Southeast has come at the most auspicious time. It’s very necessary that as a people we come together, and put our heads together to find a lasting solution to this problem of insecurity in our homeland.
“Our mainstay as a people is business, no business and indeed any other economic activity would thrive amid insecurity.
“If we put our minds to it and work in unity and mutual trust, we will find a way out of this problem that is alien to us.
“Let me therefore commend your excellencies, the governors of the Southeast for initiating the idea of the summit and working together to make this a reality.
“Let me urge everyone at this summit and those of us who are unable to attend in person to speak up, contribute ideas, and be part of the initiatives or actions that would be agreed upon at this summit to bring an end to the problem of insecurity in our region.
“God to guide us, grant us the wisdom, strength, and courage to take the necessary steps to end insecurity in our homeland so that we can continue to work with our God-given talent and energy to restore peace, tranquility in the Southeast and indeed our dear country Nigeria.”

The Nigerian striker has two years remaining on his contract.
A renewal seems incredibly unlikely at this stage, making a departure within the next 12 months a realistic possibility.
Funke Akindele, the famous Nollywood actress, has urged up-and-coming artistes to study and understand the contracts they have with their labels.
Akindele said this on the sidelines of the premiere of the Prime Video Five Part Mini Series tilted: ‘She must be Obeyed’, held at Filmhouse, IMAX Cinema, Lekki, Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the mini series is about the lives of three successful music stars, their rivalries and the backstabbing activities they engage in to outshine one another.
The series which premieres on Sept. 29 on Prime Video, features an ensemble cast led by Funke Akindele, Lateef Adedimeji, Nancy Isime and Akah Anani.
Patience Ozokwo, Mike Ezuronye, Rachael Okonkwo, amongst others, are in the cast.
Akindele emphasised on the need for young artistes to be educated noting that they must be patient and careful in their proceedings.
“It is extremely important for young and up-and-coming artistes to ensure that they study their contracts to know the details and know what they are going through.”
“We put out a content that affects young artistes and that is why we came up with this series so that when they watch it, they would learn a lot of things and be very careful.
“Young artistes need to be educated and we need to organise a lot of seminars, workshops for them to know that they are important.
“The young talents are very hungry to be seen as they want to showcase their talent but unfortunately, they don’t study their contracts, they don’t get a lawyer or families that are experienced to educate them.
“The series will teach them a lot of things that will help them grow and learn the basic things in the industry,” she said.
She noted that the series centres on the competition in the entertainment industry.
“The main character, ’SHE’, is very condescending and a bully, just like in every sector, you have bullies everywhere as along as there is hierarchy.”
“You get to see competition, drama, fashion, music and we had to showcase what young talents go through.
“The series is an eye opener for everyone and most importantly, it is very educating as well as entertaining, so, I encourage everyone to watch it.” she said.

On Friday, the governorship election petition tribunal in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, rejected the petition presented by Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It would be recalled that Sen. Omo-Agege had challenged the victory of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sheriff Oborevwori in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.
The tribunal presided over by Justice A.C. Ahuchaogu dismissed Omo-Agege’s petition for lack of merit.
In a swift reaction in a statement by Sunny Areh, his media adviser, Omo-Agege said he will appeal the dismissal of his petition by the election tribunal.
He noted that he had detailed his legal team to proceed to the Appellate Court to challenge the tribunal judgement.
Omo-Agege said the appellate court is expected to dispassionately evaluate some flaws which were allegedly ignored by the tribunal judges before arrival at their verdict.
“The gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has directed his legal team to immediately proceed with an appeal against today’s judgment of the governorship election tribunal that upheld the election of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as governor of Delta State.
“Senator Omo-Agege said the Tribunal failed to reckon with the fundamental flaws in the March 18, 2023 governorship election that mortally rendered the declaration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner untenable.
“It is a no-brainer that the Tribunal operated under a very challenging environment. It therefore ignored the unassailable evidence adduced to question the validity of lawful votes as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“I respect the decision of the Tribunal, but it is flawed. I have no doubt that these flaws which the Tribunal failed to address will be dispassionately evaluated at the Court of Appeal.
“I have, therefore, directed my legal team to immediately proceed to the Court of Appeal and continue with the fight to restore the sanctity of the people’s vote.”
