VeryDarkMan Mobilises Ratel Movement For Nationwide Community Service (Video)

Nigerian social media critic and activist, Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has launched the Ratel Movement, mobilizing his followers for a nationwide community service initiative.

In a viral video shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, VDM said the movement would commence monthly sanitisation of communities from Saturday, November 29, 2025.

According to him, the new civic initiative is aimed at tackling environmental decay and promoting patriotism among Nigerian youths.

“Starting from the 29th of November, 2025, which will be on a Saturday, we the Ratel Movement are taking over Nigeria, we are shutting down this country.

“That being said, we are not shutting down in terms of violence, we are shutting it down in terms of impact,” he said.

VDM explained that the activities would include cleaning public spaces, clearing drainages, rehabilitating school facilities, and other grassroots community services.

“We are going to start what has never been seen before in Nigeria. We are going to be moving from just being on social media claiming to be Ratels to presenting ourselves in real life and impacting our society,”
he said.

I Don’t Hate Ronaldo, But Messi Is A Better Player – Wayne Rooney Says

Former England striker Wayne Rooney has insisted that he holds no ill feelings toward Al Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, he insisted that Lionel Messi is a better footballer.

Rooney and Ronaldo were at United together between 2004 and 2009, winning three Premier League titles and a Champions League.

“I absolutely love Messi, love watching him play and that was the only reason because I think Messi had a little bit more in terms of how he played and taking players on and whatever,” Rooney said.

“Ronaldo’s a killer and people think because I’ve said Messi is better than Ronaldo, I don’t like him or speak down on him.”

Rooney played in the United team that lost two Champions League finals against Messi’s Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

Naira Abuse Driving Up Printing Costs – CBN Warns

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has expressed concern that the persistent abuse of the naira is significantly increasing the cost of printing and replacing currency notes.

The warning came on Wednesday at the flag-off of a nationwide sensitisation campaign on proper naira handling, held in Abuja.

The Deputy Governor, Operations Directorate, Dr Bala Bello, was represented by Dr Adedeji Adetona, Director of Currency Operations and Branch Management Department, who delivered the speech on his behalf.

“The Naira is more than a means of payment. It represents our national pride, our sovereignty, and our shared destiny as a people. Unfortunately, careless practices-folding, tearing, spraying at social events, writing on notes, and even outright mutilation undermine the dignity of our national symbol and increase the costs of maintaining it,” Bello said.

He warned that if corrective measures are not taken, Nigerians will continue to bear the consequences.

“If we do not act today, poor handling of our notes will continue to raise the cost of printing and replacement of the currency, cause frustration in everyday transactions, and weaken confidence in our national currency,” he added.

The campaign, themed “Naira Our Pride: Handle with Care”, is aimed at changing behaviours and instilling respect for the national currency.

The Deputy Governor stressed that the CBN cannot achieve this goal alone and called for the collaboration of banks, transport unions, traders, schools, civil society, religious organisations, and the media.

“Every stakeholder has a critical role to play. Banks must continue to educate customers and ensure fit notes are always in circulation. Markets and transport operators must help discourage the rejection or abuse of Naira notes, the media and civil society must amplify the campaign and take the message into every household, while all Nigerian citizens must see themselves as custodians of the Naira. This is how we will move from sensitisation to true behavioural change,” he said.

Bello also cautioned against hoarding cash, particularly as the festive season draws closer.

“As the yuletide season approaches, I must also emphasise that cash hoarding harms us all. It denies others access to cash, disrupts circulation, and puts undue strain on the system. Here again, collaboration is important. I therefore call on all stakeholders to encourage responsible cash use, promote alternative payment platforms, and help curb hoarding practices,”
he said.

He explained that if Nigerians handled their notes with care, the lifespan of the currency would be extended, avoidable costs would be reduced, and the naira’s position as a symbol of unity and pride would be preserved.

The sensitisation exercise, he said, would reach every state and community across the country.

In his welcome address, the Director of Currency Operations and Branch Management Department, Dr Adedeji Adetona, who was represented by a Deputy Director, Mr Kazeem Olatinwo, said the campaign was not only about clean notes but also about national pride and public confidence in the financial system.

He assured Nigerians that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure a sufficient supply of banknotes during the upcoming festive season.

“As we approach the yuletide, the Bank has made sufficient arrangements to ensure an adequate supply of banknotes to meet demand nationwide. What is needed is proper handling to keep our notes clean and fit for use,”
he said.

Also speaking, the Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department, Hakama Sidi-Ali, reminded Nigerians that issuing legal tender currency and ensuring the availability of clean notes are core mandates of the CBN under sections 17, 18 and 19 of the CBN Act 2007.

She called on citizens to take ownership of efforts to protect and preserve the integrity of the naira, stressing that it is not a task the apex bank can achieve alone.

According to her, the apex bank remains committed to enhancing Nigeria’s payment system while also protecting consumer rights.

She encouraged citizens to embrace alternative payment platforms to reduce pressure on cash usage.

Earlier in May 2025, The PUNCH reported that the CBN spent N315.18bn on currency issue expenses in 2024, marking an increase of 306 per cent compared to N77.67bn recorded in 2023.

Currency issue expenses cover the printing, processing, distribution, and disposal of banknotes.

The over 300 per cent rise in currency expenses is likely due to the massive printing of new notes, the logistics of redistributing cash across the country, and the destruction of old and damaged banknotes.

EFCC Asked To Release Interim Report On $4bn Refineries Fraud Probe

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been urged to publish an interim report on its investigation into the alleged $4 billion fraud tied to the abandoned rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries.

Anti-corruption crusaders, under the aegis of Concerned Nigerians for Transparency and Justice, CNTJ, made the demand in a statement on Wednesday.

A probe was reportedly launched into the inconclusive rehabilitation projects about six months ago but the outcome of the investigation is yet to be disclosed.

Calling for an update on the probe, the stakeholders said six months is sufficient for Nigerians to be informed about the progress of the probe and any funds recovered.

CNTJ, in a statement signed by Comrade Obinna Francis and Adamu Musa, insisted on the transparency of the probe efforts.

The statement noted that the refineries have failed to produce at full capacity despite high-profile commissioning ceremonies which promised an end to fuel imports.

CNTJ pointed to the severe economic implications of the alleged mismanagement, noting that the $4 billion — equivalent to trillions of naira — could have funded critical sectors like healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The stakeholders argued that continued dormancy has exacerbated the soaring fuel prices and attendant high level of inflation in the country.

They made reference to yet to be confirmed claims that $1 billion was diverted to finance the All Progressives Congress, APC, 2023 election campaign, potentially violating provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

CNTJ insisted that the EFCC must address the allegation and other questions surrounding the alleged $4 billion expenditure, including who authorized disbursements and whether there funds were laundered.

“We write as a civic coalition deeply invested in promoting accountability and protecting public resources. Corruption, when left unchecked, undermines democracy and impoverishes millions of Nigerians,” the statement said, pointing to the “public outcry over the alleged embezzlement of $4 billion, with the refineries remaining idle despite promises of restored functionality, leaving citizens questioning where the money went”.

Commending the EFCC for launching the probe, CNTJ however stressed that Nigerians deserve a detailed update on the investigation’s progress to maintain trust in the anti-corruption agency.

CNTJ described the probe as a critical test of EFCC’s commitment to accountability, especially given its recent handling of high-profile cases like that of former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello.

It argued that the $4 billion fraud is not an abstract issue but a direct contributor to Nigeria’s economic woes, with the Minister of Finance admitting struggles to fund the national budget.

The missing funds, according to CNTJ, could have alleviated severe hardship faced by Nigerians, pccasioned by hike in transport fares and soaring food prices.

The statement added, “The controversy over the refinery rehabilitation fund cuts to the heart of Nigeria’s current economic crisis. At current exchange rates, the missing $4 billion translates into several trillions of naira — enough to finance substantial portions of the federal budget, pay down debts, and provide direct relief to millions of suffering families.

“The situation is doubly tragic because it compounds the hardships already facing ordinary Nigerians

“Our findings bring to light a troubling allegation: that $1 billion from the refinery funds was diverted to finance the 2023 campaign of the APC. If true, this represents not only misappropriation but also a violation of the Electoral Act 2022.

“If $1 billion went into campaign activities, then Nigerians must be told: what became of the remaining $3 billion? Who authorised such disbursements? Into whose accounts were these sums transferred?”

CNTJ warned that failure to provide clarity risks eroding public confidence in governance, particularly at a time when Nigerians are bearing the brunt of economic mismanagement.

“We urge the EFCC to release an interim report, or at least a detailed public briefing, outlining the findings to date. Such a report should clarify how much of the $4 billion was disbursed, who received it, and what results have been achieved.

“Particular attention should be given to tracing the alleged $1 billion campaign donation and the other $3 billion in question,” the statement added, stressing that where credible evidence of wrongdoing is found, those indicted should be charged to court without delay.

Ballon d’Or 2025: LaLiga Explains Why Lamine Yamal Was Denied Award

LaLiga president, Javier Tebas, has claimed that Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal was denied the 2025 Ballon d’Or because of his age.

Tebas has however expressed his optimism that Yamal will soon win the award.

Ousmane Dembele of Paris Saint-Germain finished top in the Ballon d’Or voting this year, with 18-year-old Yamal as runner-up.

Yamal however went home with the Kopa Trophy for best young player, a prize he has now won back-to-back.

“If he had been older than 23, he would have won it, too, I’m sure, but since he was younger, they gave him the other one [Kopa trophy],”
Tebas said.

But unlike Tebas, Barcelona President Joan Laporta had admitted that Dembele won the prize because PSG lifted the Champions League trophy.

According to her, she only has the urge for intimacy only when she’s in love.

I Was Kicked Out Of Super Eagles For Not Passing Ball To Yekini – Siasia Opens Up

Former Super Eagles forward, Samson Siasia, has revealed the reasons behind his removal from the national team during a stage of his playing career.

It was one of the most difficult moments of the former striker’s football career.

Siasia said that it was simply because he refused to pass the ball to his teammate, Rashidi Yekini that saw him temporarily dropped from the team.

Siasia, who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles, was reflecting on the golden generation of the national team between 1990 and 1998,

Siasia told Emmanuel Babayaro on UTVAfrica that it was normal for him not to pass the ball to Yekini, insisting that the striker failed to utilise earlier chances he had created.

The striker spoke about his on-pitch relationship with the late Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s all-time top scorer.

It was during a 1994 World Cup qualifier with Nigeria playing against Ivory Coast at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Abidjan.

Siasia preferred to shoot instead of passing to the better-positioned Yekini.

Then national team boss, Clemens Westerhof saw this as a selfish display and dropped Siasia from his squad.

“I am a striker. Rashidi Yekini won’t give me that ball if it was him, that’s the truth,” he said.

“Sometimes you miss, sometimes you score. Rashidi has been one of the greatest strikers ever I have played with. May his soul rest in peace.

“My downtimes? First was when I didn’t pass the ball to Rashidi Yekini and they had to kick me out of the team and I had to hustle myself back into the team. Trying times are always there to make you stronger.

“A lot of people talked about why I didn’t pass the ball to Rashidi Yekini. The one I passed to him he couldn’t even score too, so things happen, we don’t take it personal.”
