Real Madrid edge nine-man Getafe to reclaim La Liga lead

Real Madrid battled to a narrow but crucial 1-0 win over Getafe in a tense Madrid derby at the Coliseum, returning to the top of the La Liga table after a hard-fought encounter.

Xabi Alonso made a bold selection call by benching Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler, opting instead to start Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes alongside Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman missed an early chance when his effort was denied by Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.

The hosts, however, nearly broke the deadlock through Alex Sancris, whose fierce volley narrowly missed Thibaut Courtois’ post. Despite efforts, both teams went into halftime without a goal.

Vinicius sparks chaos as Getafe go down to Nlnine

Madrid increased their pressure after the break, and the introductions of Guler and Vinicius Junior changed the game.

Moments after coming on, Vinicius was involved in a clash that saw Getafe’s Allan Nyom receive a red card for an off-the-ball incident.

Minutes later, Guler set up Mbappe, who finally broke the deadlock with a fine finish past Soria.

Getafe’s frustration grew when Alex received a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Vinicius, reducing the hosts to nine men.

Courtois preserves Madrid’s lead

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Getafe came close to snatching an equalizer deep into stoppage time, but Courtois produced a vital save to deny Abu Kamara.

The win sends Real Madrid back to the top of La Liga, two points ahead of Barcelona.

Tinubu’s Presidential Pardon Can Damage Investors’ Confidence – CPPE

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s recent presidential pardon could undermine investors’ confidence in Nigeria.

The Centre noted that a situation whereby persons convicted of economic and financial crimes benefit from the presidential pardon raises questions about policy consistency, contract sanctity, and investment security, thereby discouraging both domestic and foreign investors.

CPPE Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muda Yusuf, raised the concern in a statement on Sunday.

According to the economic think-tank, while the prerogative of mercy is a legitimate constitutional instrument, its application to serious economic and financial offences and other criminal acts demands utmost discretion, transparency, and alignment with Nigeria’s commitments to anti-corruption campaign, drug control and the sanctity of human life.

CPPE urged the Federal Government to urgently review and rationalise the list of beneficiaries of the presidential pardon.

“Reaffirm Nigeria’s zero-tolerance position on corruption, drug trafficking, illegal mining, and financial crimes; uphold institutional integrity and ensure that justice is never compromised for convenience or political expediency; and strengthen transparency and accountability in the exercise of executive clemency to safeguard public confidence and investor trust.

“Nigeria’s aspiration to build a competitive, diversified, and globally respected economy rests on the credibility of its institutions and integrity of its governance. The perception of weak sanction regimes towards economic and financial crimes is incompatible with this goal.

“To preserve investor confidence and social stability, government must demonstrate unwavering commitment to accountability, effective consequence management and the rule of law. The credibility of Nigeria’s economic reform and investment promotion drive depends largely on it,” CPPE stated.

Recall that on October 11, 2025, the Presidency released the names of 175 persons granted clemency, including illegal miners, drug traffickers and kidnappers.

Tinubu’s decision had triggered public outrage and condemnation.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, clarified that the list of those pardoned is subject to review.

Maths And English Remain Compulsory For O’Level Students – FG Clarifies

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain mandatory for all students registering for their O’Level examinations, despite the recent changes to tertiary institution admission requirements.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government said the new policy on streamlined admission criteria does not exempt any candidate from registering or sitting for the two core subjects.

According to the statement signed by Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the clarification became necessary following misinterpretations of the new O’Level admission framework.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, explained that the reform was introduced to promote flexibility, inclusiveness, and fairness in tertiary education admissions, ensuring that capable students are not denied access because of deficiencies in subjects unrelated to their chosen courses.

“The streamlining ensures that deserving students are not denied access to higher education due to credit deficiencies in subjects that are not directly relevant to their chosen fields of study,” Alausa said.

He added that the new framework aligns with global best practices and corrects imbalances in the previous admission system by allowing institutions to admit candidates into certain programmes where credit passes in either subject are not compulsory, but all students must still register and sit for both.

The ministry stressed that the adjustment only affects admission criteria for specific programmes, not the requirement to study or take the subjects.

“All students must continue to take both subjects as part of their Senior School Certificate Examinations, as they remain vital components of a sound educational foundation,”
the statement partly read.

The ministry said the policy supports the Federal Government’s broader goal of equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development, while upholding education quality and integrity.

It also urged students, parents, and education stakeholders to rely solely on the ministry’s official communication channels and verified social media platforms for accurate updates on reforms and policies.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to building a credible, inclusive, and globally competitive education system anchored on integrity, excellence, and equal opportunity for all learners.

It had earlier been reported that Nigerian senior secondary school students in arts and humanities will no longer be required to present a credit in mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examination, organised by the West African Examination Council and National Examination Council, as a condition for admission to universities and polytechnics, the Federal Ministry of Education.

Ned Nwoko Breaks Silence, Accuses Regina Daniels Of Drug And Alcohol Abuse After She Alleged Domestic V!olence (Video)

Senator Ned Nwoko has claimed that his wife, popular Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, is struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, which he described as the main cause of the ongoing issues in their marriage.

In a statement released on Sunday via his official Facebook page, the Delta North senator expressed deep concern over Regina’s health and safety, claiming that her substance abuse struggles have led to violent behavior and erratic conduct at home.

In the statement titled, ‘Regina’s Unprovoked Carnage And Rampage In My House And In My Absence,’ Nwoko said Regina was not always “like this,” adding that she must continue her rehabilitation program, or he fears for her life and safety.

The lawmaker stated that he had urged his wife to enter a rehabilitation facility either in Asokoro, Abuja, or abroad, particularly in Jordan, where she would not have access to drugs.

He alleged that Regina refused and instead relocated to an undisclosed location where she could easily obtain substances.

The senator said he has other wives, and none have ever accused him of violence. He claimed that Regina is the violent one, having slapped and hit three staff members in the past 48 hours and destroyed property, including cars and windows.

He said, “Regina was not always like this. Her current battle with drugs and alcohol abuse is the root of our problem. She must continue her rehabilitation program, or I fear for her life and safety. Now she has moved to a place where she will have unrestricted access to drugs.

“I have other wives, and none will ever accuse me of violence. Regina is the violent one here, slapping and hitting 3 staff in the past 48 hours and destroying property, including cars and windows, for no just cause.”

He further accused two individuals, identified as Sammy and Ann, of supplying drugs to the actress.

According to him, one of the incidents that triggered recent chaos in their home involved a confrontation with a nurse who allegedly exposed Regina’s drug use.

The senator representing Delta North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate, said, “The truth is, I have set a clear condition for her to accept rehab in Asokoro or outside Nigeria especially Jordan where she will not have access to drugs.

“A clear headed regina would have taken Moon (the couple’s son) to the hospital but instead she even threatened to kill our resident nurse (for exposing her drugs abuse). While I took Moon to the hospital, a scene of chaos unfolded at home, orchestrated by Sammy, Regina’s main drug supplier.”

“Another known supplier of drugs to Regina is the tiny evil devil called Ann,” he added.

Regina Daniels, 25, rose to fame as a child actress and has since become one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces. She married Senator Nwoko, a lawyer and politician, in 2019, and the couple has two children together.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that the actress had cried out over alleged persistent domestic violence and abuse in her marriage.

In a viral video that surfaced online on Saturday, Regina cried, “Not again, I can’t stand the violence, it is too much.”

The viral video making the rounds on X (formerly Twitter) showed Regina surrounded by several people, including a lady believed to be her sister, amid a tense commotion.

In the video, Regina seemed to be fainting as those who surrounded her could be heard requesting water for her.

Meanwhile, she could be heard shouting, “In Ned Nwoko’s house, I am nothing, but in my own house, I am a Queen. Not again. I can’t stand the violence, it’s too much.”
At one point, the video depicts men who appeared ready to intervene, including a man holding what looked like a stick, suggesting the situation had become heated.

As she broke down in tears, those around her were seen trying to calm her down, but the immediate cause of the disturbance was not made clear in the recording.
