Apple Music Chart Is Now Like A Report Card For Nigerian Artists – Zlatan Ibile

Zlatan Ibile, the Nigerian hip-hop artist, has explained that streaming giant, Apple Music chart is now like a report card for the country’s musicians.

He said most Nigerian artists check the position of their songs on the chart before they pray in the morning.

The Zanku crooner stated this while featuring as a guest on the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Adesope.

He said, “People [artists] that don’t take their online presence seriously before, started looking into it. People that don’t care about their royalty and then just focused on show money…Obviously, you make more money from shows, you just leave the royalties till you are ready. People started calling their DSPs, ‘How much do I have in Apple Music? How much in Spotify? How much in Audiomack?’

“So, that was when people started concentrating on the whole chart thing. Everybody wants to be on the chart. That is what people in the diaspora listen to… So, obviously, everyone wants to be on it. The chart [Apple Music] is like a report card now. Every artist when they wake up in the morning, most of us before we pray, we just go to Apple Music [to know what’s going on]. Before the next day, we even go to the chart to know where it [a song] is going to chart the next day.”

A famous American music producer, Swizz Beats disclosed the part he and his ex-wife, Alicia Keys, played in introducing Nigerian Afrobeats singers, Wizkid and Burna Boy to audiences in America.

He made this known on Amazon Music’s Roundtable audiovisual podcast. Swizz Beats stated that at a time when the genre was not yet popular in the US, he was the first to play Wizkid’s songs.

Additionally, he mentioned that he provided Burna Boy with an opportunity to perform in front of an audience in the United States before he gained widespread recognition.

In his words;

“I introduced Wizkid to America. I was the first person to play his song. Me and my wife [Alicia Keys] were on a trip and we danced to his songs.

“I was [also] the first person to bring Burna Boy to the States. I introduced him on the stage. When I was playing Fela Kuti, people thought I was being too African.

“And that how ignorant the energy was at that time. But I didn’t let that stop me from moving what I’m moving because it’s what it’s. It’s about education.

We [Americans] can’t be scared of the educational journey of something that sounds different or feels different,” he stated.
