Islamic Group, MURIC Attacks Oyo Governor, Makinde For Naming Rebuilt Mosque After Self

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has slammed Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State.

MURIC said that Seyi Makinde has no moral right to rename the rebuilt Adogba Central Mosque, which his administration demolished in 2020, after himself.

The MURIC Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said this in a statement on Saturday.

The group warned Makinde to remove his name from the mosque before next Saturday’s Governorship election.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to the name of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, which has been conspicuously printed on the newly rebuilt Adogba

Central Mosque, Iwo Road, Ibadan. It’s an insult to the corporate dignity of the Muslim community of Oyo State, in particular, and the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.

“Makinde has no moral right to name the mosque after himself because it was a replacement of the original mosque, which was demolished by him.

“MURIC advised the governor to effect the change before the gubernatorial election on Saturday to avoid a protest vote. It doesn’t belong to him. It’s an attempt to rewrite history.”

If Not For Peter Obi, North Would Have Retained Power – Nyesom Wike Says

Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State Governor, has talked about Peter Obi.

He described Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as the hero of the 2023 presidential election.

Governor Wike said the decision of Obi to contest the presidential election under the platform of the Labour Party, primarily prevented the North from retaining power after the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

The Rivers State Governor made the commendation during an interactive meeting with the Technical Dealers Association of Nigeria, Computer Dealers Association, Garrison Phone Dealers Association and Building Materials Traders Association in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Governor Wike explained that contrary to insinuation that he did not support Obi, what most people failed to realise is that the Labour Party presidential candidate remains his hero of the election.

“Obi is my hero. If Obi did not contest, power would have gone back to the North. The whole of South-South and South-East that PDP lost if Obi did not contest PDP would have won,” he said.

He further added: “The hero in this election is Obi whether you like it or not. I am not here to please you, Obi is the hero. He may not have been pronounced as the winner, no problem, the law will take its course. If Obi did not run this election, power would have remained in the North. Whether he declared a winner now or not, history will be on his side that he fought and fought well.”

The Rivers State Governor said the reason he did not publicly declare support for any presidential candidate was that the PDP G-5 governors had unanimously agreed to ensure the emergence of a president from southern Nigeria to succeed President Buhari.

Governor Wike said while members of the G-5 governors assiduously worked for power to return to the South, the likes of former Rivers State governor and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, who is now soliciting for Igbo to support APC candidate, Tonye Cole, mobilised votes for Atiku Abubakar.

“If Amaechi loves the Igbos, why did he not support Obi? Instead, he supported Atiku. He did not want the power to return to the South because he lost the APC ticket.”

The governor said the reason Amaechi is deliberately canvassing support for Tonye Cole is that he wants to stall their ongoing prosecution for embezzling $50 million from the Rivers State government coffers.

Governor Wike urged Igbos in Rivers State to be wary of Amaechi, who served as Minister of Transportation for over seven years but failed to revive eastern ports and railway lines from Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt.

The governor recalled that when Amaechi was the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, he vehemently opposed the plan to compensate Igbos who lost their property in the State during the civil war.

According to him, it is absolutely mischievous for Amaechi, who also served as Rivers State governor from 2007 to 2015, to wake up in 2023 to resurrect the issue of abandoned property because of his inordinate political ambition.

The governor announced the allocation of 150 plots of land to the Computer Dealers Association and 30 plots to Computer Dealers Association to develop an industrial park in Port Harcourt.

The Chairmen of the Computer Dealers Association, Mr Anunobi Ikechi and the Building Materials Traders Association, Okwudiri Onuorah, assured the governor of their support for the Rivers State PDP governorship candidate, Siminialayi Fubara in the March 18 elections.

Ekiti State Government Threatens To Arrest, Prosecute Residents Rejecting Old N500, N1000 Notes

Biodun Oyebanji, the Ekiti State Governor, has issued a new directive.

The governor has said that the state government will arrest and prosecute traders and service providers rejecting the old N500 and N1000 naira notes.

Oyebanji in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Yinka Olubode, on Saturday in Ado Ekiti, appealed to traders and business owners in the state to stop creating hardship for residents.

The governor explained that the old N500 and N1000 denominations remained legal tender by virtue of the ruling of the Supreme Court which extended its validity date till December 31.

Oyebanji said that his office had been inundated with the outcry of the people due to the hardship being faced as a result of the low circulation of the newly redesigned Naira notes, Vanguard Reports.

He said the Supreme Court had by its March 3 ruling, extended the validity date for the old naira notes in a case instituted by some states, including Ekiti.

Oyebanji said that the refusal of many business owners in the state to accept the old naira notes as means of the transaction was unlawful.

“This is an appeal to all residents of Ekiti to abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court, which has provided a reprieve for the people by extending the validity date of the old naira notes till December 31.

“As a honourable people, what is expected of us is to abide by the ruling of the apex court and continue to accept the old naira notes as means of transactions and not to inflict further hardship on one another by rejecting it.

“The government will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute business owners found rejecting the old naira notes,” the statement quoted Oyebanji as saying.

The governor, therefore, appealed to the market women and men, artisans, transporters, filling stations, supermarket owners and school proprietors as well as service providers to remain law abiding and accept the old naira notes.

He also urged the commercial banks and Central Bank of Nigeria,(CBN) to make the old and new currencies available in their branches and at their Automated Teller Machines (ATM) points in order to ease the stress residents go through to get money for their daily and commercial needs.

Labour Party Threatens To Occupy INEC Offices Nationwide For ‘Disobeying’ Tribunal’s Directive To Release BVAS Machines For Inspection

The Labour Party has issued a new threat to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The party threatened that it will call on its members to occupy offices of INEC nationwide for allegedly frustrating its petition against the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

The party’s Presidential Campaign Council chief spokesman, Tanko Yunusa, disclosed this in a statement.

According to Yunusa, INEC refused to allow its lawyers and agents inspect the Bimodal Voter Authentication System (BVAS) machines alongside other electoral materials.

He added that the electoral body has decided which court orders to obey and which to disregard.

The spokesman wondered why INEC disobeyed the order of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal directing the electoral umpire to grant the party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, access to the certified true copies of materials used in the conduct of the poll.

The statement read, “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with greatest impunity have refused, neglected and failed to obey the Order of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja made on the 03rd day of March 2023, directing it to grant the Labour Party and its presidential candidate H.E. Peter Gregory Obi leave to apply and receive from INEC, certified true copies of materials used in the presidential election held on 25th February 2023.

“It will be recalled that the aforesaid Order of the presidential election petition tribunal was duly served on INEC on the 3rd of March 2023 despite the fact that they were present and represented at the tribunal when the Order was made.

“Not minding the service of the said Order on INEC, and a reminder letter dated the 6th day of March 2023 and delivered same date at the INEC Headquarters Abuja, the electoral umpire has continued to ignore and or disobey the valid Order of such magnitude till NOW.

“It should be noted that in a democracy like ours, rule of law must triumph not only in our legal system but also in our body polity as a whole. Parties to a litigation like in the instant case must accept and obey every order of court in good faith and no party should be seen to employ self-help to disparage or disrespect an order of court which if not checked and curtailed could possibly undermine our democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism.

“The action of INEC under reference also constitutes for all intent and purposes, an act of judicial insubordination and willful refusal to comply to the order of court. As we speak INEC has chosen to obey the court order given to it to reconfigure the BVAS machine, which they doing right now and ignoring the order granted to us to inspect electoral materials.

“We therefore call on the general public to note the level of lawlessness and brazen disobedience to a lawful order of a court by an important statutory agency such as INEC, and which is a well calculated attempt to undermine and frustrate the presentation of the Petition by the Labour Party and its Presidential candidate before the tribunal in good time.

“We therefore want to state that we will not fail to call our supporters to march to INEC offices nationwide in a non-violent protest which is allowed by law. This is to curtail the flagrant disobedience to court orders by INEC.”
