ASUU Reacts to Removal Of Fuel Subsidy, Petrol Price Hike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has given the federal government idea on how to reduce the suffering Nigerians are experiencing as a result of fuel subsidy.

ASUU urged the Federal Government to rebuild the nation’s refineries immediately.

The union’s National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, gave the advice on Wednesday at a Maiden Public Lecture and Groundbreaking ceremony of its Secretariat at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University (AE-FUNAI), Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

Osodeke explained that the lecture, titled, “Reinventing Nigerian Universities for Research and Development: The ASUU Perspective”, was to educate the public on the importance of research for nation building.

He decried the way the government had spent trillions of naira on repairing the refineries, advising that restoring them would ensure sustainable development not only in the oil industry but in all other sectors.

“Let me tell you, any nation that doesn’t promote education always invites crisis.

“On subsidy removal, we are an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); so, whatever action they are taking on this nationwide issue, we’ll support them and our next action depends on NLC.

“In fact, we don’t believe in fuel subsidies. There is no subsidy in this country. You cannot be exporting crude oil for the past 70 years and yet you cannot refine the crude oil and sell to your people.

“Sell it to your people at the Nigerian rate and not in dollars. You see, something is wrong. So, there is a need to rebuild our refineries and prioritize the nation’s education for sustainable development,” he added.

Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, immediate past president of the union, who delivered the lecture, called for the full engagement of the lecturers and stakeholders in education for a better country.

Ogunyemi urged federal and state governments to embrace research and prioritize education and improve the quality of life of the citizens.

Prof Sunday Elom, Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, represented by Prof Ramanus Ejiaga, commended the union for organizing the lecture which he said was timely.

Oil Marketers Meet President Tinubu, Declare Support For Oil Subsidy Removal

President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu held a meeting with the Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) at the Presidential Villa, on Wednesday, June 7.

At the meeting, the oil marketers pledged their support to the President over the recent removal of oil subsidy.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, the association’s chairperson, Dame Winifred Akpani, said the association would also support the government’s palliative measures by providing between 50 and 100 mass transit buses.

Akpani said the buses would be locally manufactured and would use Compressed Natural Gas as fuel.

“We pledge our support for President Tinubu in the bold decision of removing petrol subsidy. It is an idea that was long overdue. Removal of subsidy is not about making fuel costly and taking it out of the reach of Nigerians. It is about getting it right on the real issue of petroleum product subsidy. Who are those enjoying the subsidy? The subsidy ends up being enjoyed by those it was not meant for. We also spoke to the president about substitutes to petrol as well as creating an environment conducive for investments to thrive in the oil sector’’ she said.

The Governor of Ogun state,  Dapo Abiodun, who led the DAPPMAN delegation, described the subsidy removal as a bold step that portended positive growth for the economy. He said fuel subsidy withdrawal was a clear indication of Tinubu’s readiness to address the challenges of the oil and gas sector.

“Subsidy has become a N4 trillion per annum issue and its removal will release more funds for economic development. Subsidy removal will unleash the potential of Nigeria because it will open up a lot of resources for the development of other sectors of the economy. The National Economic Council will soon begin sitting to propose interventions on the subsidy removal. The interventions will definitely be a long-lasting solution to the effect of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians”
Governor Abiodun said.

NDLEA Denies Carrying Out Lopsided Promotions

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismissed reports that it embarked on lopsided promotions.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 7, by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, it was stated that promotions remain an ongoing exercise based on a number of factors including vacancies.

The public has been urged to disregard any such information that seeks to cast an aspersion on the strides attained by the NDLEA, especially under the steady leadership of Gen. Marwa.

The statement read;

“Indeed, the issues raised by the category of personnel mentioned in the reports arose in 2011, which was 10 clear years before the current leadership of Brig. Gen. MB Marwa (Retd).

“However, in a determined bid to motivate the workforce, over 70% of the workforce, a number of who had been stagnated on one rank for 15-20 years, were promoted and their ranks harmonized in 2021 soon after Gen. Marwa assumed leadership of the Agency.

“Even though more than half of the category of personnel referred to in the reports had been promoted in the recent promotion exercises, the ongoing expansion of the Agency which creates more vacancies for officers and men to move up, no doubt provides the window for the few not yet affected to be elevated in another exercise underway for the junior ranks.

“Anyone not yet affected can rest assured that the Chairman/CEO considers their welfare paramount and central to the successes so far achieved by his leadership and will continue to pay attention to their career progression in the interest of the overall high productivity goal set for all Commands and formations of the Agency.”
