Popular Nigerian Afrobeats star, Davido performed his hit tracks in Ethiopia as the country celebrated the arrival of the New Year of 2017.
In Ethiopia, it is widely known that the birth of Jesus Christ is recognized as occurring seven or eight years later than in the Gregorian, or “Western,” calendar.
As a result, New Year, or Enkutatash, is celebrated annually on September 11, or September 12 during a leap year.
Davido’s performance was a highlight of the vibrant celebrations, with fans enthusiastically embracing his energetic set, adding to the excitement of the holiday.
Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has firmly committed to a thorough and vigorous enforcement of the nation’s financial laws. The Commission aims to thoroughly cleanse the banking sector and protect it from the harmful effects of criminal activities by rogue individuals.
This forthright declaration was made on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the prestigious Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN)’s 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference, which was convened under the thought-provoking theme: “Accelerated Economic Growth and Development: The State of Play and the Way Forward.”
The conference was held at the opulent Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
Speaking tough on what will be done, Olukoyede said: “I make bold to tell you with every sense of humility that we are no longer folding our arms. As a matter of fact some of the mind-boggling, major financial fraud and onslaught that have been carried out against the economy ran through the banking industry. We are committed to working with the institute in sanitizing the financial services sector through robust enforcement of our financial laws and insulating it from impact from criminals both from within and from without.”
Olukoyede further reiterated the Commission’s unwavering commitment to the enforcement of extant laws and penal sanctions, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of their stature or position within the banking and financial sector, would be spared in the cleansing endeavor.
“In as much as we are ready to work with you to sanitize the system, we must also note that it is extremely important to state that when there are criminal infractions, penal sanctions will follow. We have compiled our documents; we have made the necessary investigations, we have concluded and very soon you will see some banks get prosecuted and top officials prosecuted. We need to just do something drastic to bring everybody in line. To do the right thing is extremely important. In a system where there are no penal sanctions for criminal infractions, that system will never survive.
“From our experience with the investigation of financial crimes involving members of the banking profession, there is gross contempt for regulations that bother on impunity. Operators secretly devise means to circumvent regulations and rules in a desperate bid for higher yields. Sharp practices such as forex round-tripping, defrauding of investors through phantom charges and complicity in money laundering and illicit financial flow involving politically-exposed persons continue to undermine the integrity of the sector and by extension the nation’s economy.
“Look at yourselves in the mirror and leave this place with renewed commitment to professionalism and determination to provide services that will assist the growth and development of the Nigerian economy,” the EFCC boss stated.
Augustine Eguavoen, the interim Super Eagles coach, has opened up on why he substituted Samuel Chukwueze during the second half of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifying match against Rwanda on Tuesday.
Chukwueze was brought off at halftime, with Moses Simon taking his place.
Speaking at his post-match interview, Eguavoen said the AC Milan winger had to be replaced because he had a yellow card and was tormenting the hosts.
“He [Chukwueze] is very good, he’s one of our good players. Today, we came up with a strategy, he got a yellow card and he was tormenting you [Rwanda] guys,” Eguavoen told reporters.
“We had three players on yellow cards so it’s kind of a risk also. We have to make some substitutions and we have players who can go forward also.
“We thought Chukwueze should rest not because he’s not playing well but because of the risk of getting a second yellow card.”
John Ogu, the Super Eagles midfielder, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to retain Austin Eguavoen as head coach of the senior national team.
Recall that the NFF had appointed Eguavoen to oversee the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualification games against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Eguavoen’s appointment came after the NFF failed to get a substantive coach for the Super Eagles.
In a tweet on his X account on Wednesday, Ogu wants the NFF to keep Eguavoen in his position ahead of the AFCON qualifiers in October 2024.
“Dear @thenff, Please keep coach @coacheguavoen. Give him time to keep building the team moving forward,” Ogu tweeted.
Eguavoen, however, is expected to lead the Super Eagles in their next AFCON qualifiers in October.
Ademola Lookman, the Super Eagles forward, has revealed that his colleague, Calvin Bassey was the first player he told when he learned about his nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or award.
Lookman was recently named among the 30 candidates for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
The Atalanta winger is competing against top players like Vinicius Júnior, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, and Dani Carvajal.
Speaking with the Counter Attack Podcast, Lookman said: “I was on the bus on the way back from training. I saw our handle posted that I have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or. I was a bit surprised.
“Obviously, I am in a room with Calvin Bassey and when I told him, he was just jumping up and down. He was very happy and was like you don’t really understand. That was when I took it in.”
THE IMPOSTER
I was in the bathroom having a shower, enjoying the soothing cold water, cascading on my well-rounded firm breast down to my toes, relieving me of the day’s stress that had tensed my muscles when I heard two simultaneous knocks on the front door. I have always hated the fact that my bathroom was just a few steps away from the front door, that default in this building prevents me from pretending I did not hear whenever people come knocking. The closeness gives me away, they easily hear the splash of water, and my soft voice singing along and syncing with the songs from my MP3.
