Coloured: ‘I’m Not Sorry’ – Tyla Reacts To Tiwa Savage’s Apology To Americans On Her Behalf

Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla has responded to Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage’s apology to Black Americans on her behalf regarding her “coloured” comments.

Recall that Tyla sparked a controversy after publicly identifying as “coloured”-a term widely accepted in South Africa to describe people of mixed descent.

However, the word carries a painful history in the United States, where it is considered offensive.

Consequently, Tyla has been heavily backlashed by Americans, especially by the Black community.

In light of this, Tiwa Savage apologised to the African-American community on Tyla’s behalf, during a recent appearance on American show The Breakfast Club, declaring herself as the ‘Water’ hitmaker’s “elder.”

Savage’s apology triggered an uproar from South Africans, who berated her for speaking for one of their own without having a proper understanding of their identity and racial terminology.

Tyla also subtly sent a message that the Nigerian singer’s apology does not represent her by declaring that she is “not sorry” during her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York over the weekend.

“Sorry, I am not sorry,” she declared before performing her song ‘Mr Media.’

Meanwhile, fellow South Africans have been hailing Tyla for disassociating herself from Tiwa Savage’s apology.

Thousands of South African online users shared clip of Tyla’s subtle message across social media platforms, praising her for standing firm on her race/identity.

Be Humble, God Can Use Anyone – Tiwa Savage Warns Afrobeats Artists

Afrobeats singer, Tiwa Savage has sent a serious warning to her colleagues.
She warned them to be humble, noting that they are just ambassadors of the movement.
According to her, Afrobeats artists should not let fame and fortune intoxicate them, adding that God can replace them.
She warned that it is more disastrous to fall from grace than being an underground artist.
Speaking in a recent interview with Hot 97 FM New York, Savage said, “We are just ambassadors, we are just like the faces of Afrobeats. And that’s why we can’t let it get into our heads because we are just vessels and there can be somebody else.

“God can take it away like that. So, you have to be grounded. You have to be humble. Imagine, coming this far and then falling. That is worse than not ever tasting fame. I would rather have never seen in my life than seen and lose my sight. That is worse to me.

“So, for me, it is like, I have tasted this thing now, I have to be humble. Just for God’s sake.”

The singer also expressed her admiration for some of her colleagues.

“I love Ayra Starr, it’s almost an obsession. I see myself in her, but I see a more confident one; when I was starting out, if I saw an article that my skirt was too short, the next time I might wear trousers. But Ayra would wear a skirt that is even shorter the next time. I love her confidence.

“I love the mystery behind Tems. You don’t know too much about her and she doesn’t care. I love Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania. He is so talented and he has put his community on the map.”
