You Can’t Tell Me How To Criticise Tinubu – Sowore Replies DSS

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has refused the Department of State Services’ (DSS) demand to withdraw a social media post criticizing President Bola Tinubu.

Sowore said DSS has no business telling him how to criticise the President.

“You have no business telling me how to criticise the President. But, knowing the nature of your service, it is clear you have not learnt your lessons. Let me state it clearly once again: the determination of the Nigerian people to reclaim their country from thieves in power is unwavering. And it shall be achieved. Freedom cometh by struggle. Aluta continua, victoria ascerta,” Sowore said.

In a letter addressed to the DSS Director General, Sowore dismissed the agency’s request as unlawful and an attempt to act as a proxy for the president.

Sowore said the DSS had a long history of repression against him, recounting several instances of alleged rights violations dating back to his days as a student leader in the 1990s.

He cited arrests in 1993, 1996, and 2019, including his detention on allegations of treason and money laundering, as well as the invasion of a Federal High Court during his trial.

He accused the DSS of acting “bullishly, illegally and unlawfully” under successive governments and said its attempt to demand a retraction on behalf of Tinubu was “fundamentally defective” and unconstitutional.

“The DSS has dragged me through unscrupulous abuse and gross violations of rights for decades without remorse,”
Sowore wrote.

Quoting constitutional provisions and African human rights treaties, he argued that freedom of speech protects citizens’ right to criticize public officials. He said defamation is a personal matter and cannot be pursued by the DSS on behalf of the president.

He added that his criticism of government was consistent with his long-standing activism and political convictions, insisting that Nigerians remain determined to reclaim the country from “thieves in power.”

DSS Summons Sowore Over Post on Tinubu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly summoned activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.
According to TheNation, DSS summoned him over what it described as a “false and malicious” social media post directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Recall that Sowore took to X to few days ago to slam President Tinubu, describing him as a “criminal.”
The Nation reported that in a letter dated September 7, 2025, signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director-General, the DSS demanded that Sowore retract his statement on X (formerly Twitter) and issue a public apology within one week.
The Service accused Sowore of calling the President a “criminal” in an August 26 post, where he allegedly ridiculed Tinubu’s anti-corruption remarks during his visit to Brazil. According to the DSS, the comment was “repugnant, derogatory and capable of inciting public disturbance.”
The letter outlined conditions for compliance, requiring Sowore to post an unequivocal retraction on X, publish apologies in at least two national newspapers and two television stations, and submit a representation to the DSS headquarters in Abuja or by email. The agency also copied the United States Embassy in Abuja on the matter.
The DSS warned that Sowore’s comments had the potential to diminish the President’s standing domestically and internationally, and could provoke disunity, insurrection, or a breakdown of law and order.

“Persons of your status who are campaigning to lead this country must exercise restraint and responsibility in their speech,” the Service stated, adding that failure to comply would invite lawful action.

NYSC ‘Still Processing’ Petition Of Lagos Corps Member Punished For Criticising Tinubu – Sowore

Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, has revealed that the registration office of the NYSC Director General confirmed that the petition submitted by Lagos State female corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as “Raye,” requesting the release of her discharge certificate, is currently being processed.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), made the disclosure on Wednesday in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, while giving an update on his visit to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

SaharaReporters on August 12, 2025, reported that Uguamaye petitioned the NYSC DG over the “unlawful and politically motivated” extension of her service year by two months, allegedly in retaliation for her criticism of President Bola Tinubu and his administration.

The petition, signed by Inibehe Effiong, Principal Counsel of Inibehe Effiong Chambers, accused the NYSC of victimisation and abuse of power.

The petition maintained that Uguamaye was singled out for punishment after she publicly criticised Tinubu’s government policies.

The petition further alleged that the Lagos State Coordinator of the NYSC had threatened her with a service extension following her comments.

The petition demanded the immediate reversal of the two-month extension and the issuance of Ms. Uguamaye’s discharge certificate without delay.

It also warned that failure to comply would lead to a formal appeal to the Presidency and possible legal action.

In his post on Wednesday, Sowore narrated that during his visit to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, he, Ms. Uguamaye’s lawyer, Barrister Inibehe Effiong, and others who went with him to meet with the DG were initially denied access and harassed by officers of the Nigerian Army deployed to the facility.

“Yesterday, we returned to the National Youth Service Corps Headquarters to follow up on our letter demanding that the Director-General Brigadier General OO Nafiu release Ushie Rita “Raye” Uguamaye’s discharge certificate,” Sowore said.

“Instead of granting us access to see the DG, Nigerian Army officers deployed at the premises harassed us simply for exercising our right to document our movement with video recordings.”

Sowore added that all senior officials, including the DG of the NYSC, “conveniently instructed their staff to tell us they were ‘not on seat’”.

However, Sowore noted, “After persistent effort, the registration office on the DG’s floor finally admitted that our letter, submitted by Barrister Inibehe Effiong, is ‘still being processed’”.

He vowed, “We will not relent. We will return to the NYSC Headquarters until justice is done and Raye receives her rightful discharge certificate without further delay.”

Sowore Freed After Police Detention Sparks Nationwide Outcry

Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener Omoyele Sowore was released from Nigeria Police custody late Friday, following nearly three days of detention that ignited widespread protests and condemnation from civil society groups.

Announcing his release on X, Sowore stated, “Nigeria Police Force and its illegal IGP has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement, I have been released from unjust, unwarranted & unlawful detention.

“However, it is nothing to celebrate, but I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity #RevolutionNow.”

The detention began on Wednesday, August 6, when Sowore honoured a police invitation from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters in Abuja, prompted by petitions alleging forgery and criminal defamation.

Accompanied by his legal team, A.K. Musa and Marshal Abubakar, and supporters from the Take It Back Movement, Sowore arrived prepared for potential detention, carrying a travel bag with essentials.

Tensions escalated when he demanded access to the petitions and refused to make a statement without seeing them, leading to his detention.

Reports emerged of alleged assault by police, with claims that Sowore sustained a broken arm during a forcible transfer to an undisclosed location on Thursday morning.

Civil society groups, including the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) and the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), condemned the detention as a “politically motivated witch-hunt” and an “assault on every Nigerian.” OYC’s statement, signed by National President Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, demanded Sowore’s immediate release and prosecution of involved officers, warning, “The more you treat the Nigerian people with disdain, violence, and flawless disregard, the closer you push this country to the edge of civil unrest and anarchy.”

The Take It Back Movement, led by Juwon Sanyaolu, threatened nationwide protests, stating, “The Nigerian people, students, workers, and our entire membership are hereby put on notice for a nationwide protest against the unlawful use of state institutions to suppress dissent.”

The petitions, presented by DCP Akin Fakorede, included one from Assistant Commissioner Bukola Yemisi Kuti, alleging defamation, and another accusing Sowore of forging a police document.

Critics, including the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, argued the charges were baseless, with YRC noting, “None of the cases against him are criminal; ‘insult of an IGP’ is not a known offence under the law.”

Sowore’s prior activism, including a July 21 protest for retired police officers’ welfare, was cited as a trigger for the police’s actions, with supporters alleging a vendetta by IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

The release follows intense pressure from activists, with Amnesty International and HURIWA demanding medical attention for Sowore’s injuries and an end to “phantom charges.”

Sowore Rejects Tinubu’s Intervention In Ondo State, Insists Akeredolu Is Incapacitated, Must Resign

Omoyele Sowore, the human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow, has rejected the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the ongoing political crisis in Ondo State, saying it failed to provide concrete solutions.

Sowore, who said this in a post made via his X platform on Sunday morning described, President Tinubu’s intervention as unacceptable and said it was high time for the state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu to resign.

Sowore said, “Let’s remind @officialABAT that his so-called intervention in Ondo state to prop up an obviously incapacitated Governor  @RotimiAkeredolu  is unacceptable, and hereby loudly rejected! Akeredolu must resume or RESIGN!”

SaharaReporters earlier reported how President Bola Tinubu held a meeting with Ondo State lawmakers, deputy governor and elders on Friday in the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, over the current political crisis in the state, where he simply asked all the warring parties to “maintain the status quo.”

Insiders at the meeting had told SaharaReporters that the president gave no clear solution to the current vacuum in governance experienced in Ondo State, as he “simply imposed ailing Rotimi Akeredolu” on the attendants of the meeting as the governor of the state.

Meanwhile, in a release by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to Tinubu, the presidency noted that President Tinubu had resolved the political crisis in the state – a claim which is far from the truth.

The presidency, on Saturday morning said, “In his bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu, late on Friday, waded into the months-long crisis between factions loyal to the Executive Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

“This followed marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers of Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress, and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja.

“The President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect. This means that Governor Akeredolu remains Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.

“Mr. Aiyedatiwa, who declared his decision to maintain the status quo and unite all the factions, said: “I want to say that I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.
