Ibadan Explosion: Those Who Brought Tragedy On State Will Be Punished, Says Gov Makinde

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has stated that the state has identified the company responsible for storing the explosives that led to Tuesday’s explosion on Dejo Oyelese Street, Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan. He emphasized that appropriate legal actions will be taken to ensure accountability and justice for the incident.

The governor stated this on Wednesday, during a press conference on the incident, held at the Briefing Room of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, saying: “Those who brought this tragedy on Oyo State will be brought to book.”

According to a statement signed by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to Oyo State Governor, Governor Makinde called for calm, assuring that the state government has been on top of the situation and that it is leaving no stone unturned regarding the search and rescue of victims at the rubble of the incident as well as the welfare of victims and the security of their properties.

He maintained that it is a trying time for the state and that its people must draw on their strength and resilience and be their brother’s keepers.

According to the governor, some measures already taken by the state government to address the situation include the setting up of an Emergency Operation Centre to oversee search and rescue.

He vowed that search and rescue efforts would continue until all lives in the vicinity of the blast were accounted for, adding that the state government had also made provisions with hotels to accommodate victims and those living close to the site of the incident once they could identify themselves.

Governor Makinde also revealed that President Bola Tinubu spoke to him to commiserate with families who lost loved ones to the incident as well as promise the support of the Federal Government on the situation.

He appreciated the President for also deploying the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which he noted was on the ground at the scene of the explosion.

The governor recounted that so far, there were three deaths from the incident and that the number of the injured was about 77.

He warned residents of the state to be wary of spreading fake figures and misinformation regarding the fatalities and the number of casualties.

The press conference came shortly after the governor had visited some victims of the incidents at different hotels around Bodija, Idi Ape and Ikolaba axes, where the state government is providing accommodation and feeding for them.

He said: “Since yesterday, our security agencies, first responders, emergency services and all other relevant agencies have been working diligently as they carry out search and rescue operations.

“Just this morning, another individual was recovered from the rubble. I want to assure you that the search and rescue operation will continue until all lives within the vicinity of the blast are accounted for.

“We are aware that aside from the immediate perimeter of the incident, people as far as 25km away may have been affected physically or psychologically. We have, therefore, put the Emergency Operation Centre, which is being headed by Professor Temitope Alonge, to coordinate all search and rescue efforts.

“I would like to appeal to our people to remain calm as we do everything to provide succour to everyone concerned. Some numbers have been provided to reach out to the Emergency Operation Centre.

“I know the 615 is operational but there are additional ones: 07049948057 and 08147672009. If you have any information regarding any persons who may still be trapped within that perimeter. Please call that number and we will respond to you.”

The governor appealed to those staying in any of the houses within 250 metres of ground zero to move out to government-provided accommodation until a structural integrity test was conducted on the buildings.

Makinde also issued a stern warning to individuals who might be planning to take advantage of the incident to perpetrate crimes, noting that security agents would deal decisively with such individuals.

He promised that the state would continue to provide regular updates regarding the actions it is taking through the EMO and its various back channels on and off social media.

While addressing journalists, the Head of the Emergency Operations, Prof. Alonge said an emergency response to the incident was to set up a team of about 40 doctors, 40 nurses and 25 medical students at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

He added that victims who were injured were receiving medical attention in private and government hospitals and that most of them were in stable condition.

Apart from doctors and nurses, we have added to our team physiotherapists, clinical psychologists and they were on ground yesterday to assess the psychological state of the survivors of this unfortunate incident,” he said.

Islamic Group, MURIC Attacks Oyo Governor, Makinde For Naming Rebuilt Mosque After Self

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has slammed Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State.

MURIC said that Seyi Makinde has no moral right to rename the rebuilt Adogba Central Mosque, which his administration demolished in 2020, after himself.

The MURIC Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said this in a statement on Saturday.

The group warned Makinde to remove his name from the mosque before next Saturday’s Governorship election.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to the name of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, which has been conspicuously printed on the newly rebuilt Adogba

Central Mosque, Iwo Road, Ibadan. It’s an insult to the corporate dignity of the Muslim community of Oyo State, in particular, and the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.

“Makinde has no moral right to name the mosque after himself because it was a replacement of the original mosque, which was demolished by him.

“MURIC advised the governor to effect the change before the gubernatorial election on Saturday to avoid a protest vote. It doesn’t belong to him. It’s an attempt to rewrite history.”

Presidential Polls: I Stood For Justice And Equity – Gov Makinde Reveals Why Tinubu Won In Oyo

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has disclosed why the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the state during the polls.

The governor expressed happiness to be part of the process that “redrew the electoral map of Nigeria.”

Makinde, who spoke on Saturday when he was featured on Splash FM’s State Affairs with Desmond Obilo, said he stood for equity and fairness.

Tinubu polled 449,884 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 182,977 votes in Oyo.

“I supported fairness, justice and equity. I supported a united Nigeria, a Nigeria that gives opportunity to every part of this country
,” Makinde said.

When he was told that he delivered his ward to Tinubu, Makinde said, “He (Tinubu) defeated me out there. How do you deliver your ward?”

He said democracy was about people expressing themselves through the ballot, saying a lot of people in Oyo voted who they wanted. “That is what they decide to do.”

“You know, you allow people to express themselves. A lot of our people, that is what they decided to do. They decided that, look, we want after eight years of presidency in the North, they want it to come to the South and this place being South-West, one of theirs was a candidate, so they supported one of their own.”

The governor says when one goes into a contest, he or she has to situate things appropriately, adding, “We had a survey before that election; we knew that a lot of our people are agitating for a country where there is fairness, equity and justice. I pointed it out to our party.”

“I am glad that I am a part of a process that redrew the electoral map of Nigeria. That arrogance, I believe with the result of last Saturday’s election, is basically behind us. Now we know that people will have to seek alignment. If you want to rule this country, you are not just going to say oh, because I am from a certain part of this country, then that is the only qualification I require to rule this country. Now, you have to build bridges, reach out to others.”

Seyi Makinde provides free buses in Oyo state.

Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has announced the deployment of free Omituntun transport buses to alleviate the state’s people’s suffering from the twin crises of the naira and fuel scarcity that have befallen Nigerians in recent weeks.

Governor Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde, who announced this in a statewide broadcast aired on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), said that the state government was ready to do whatever it can to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

The governor, who frowned at the resort to violent protests by some residents of Ibadan earlier on Friday, said that while citizens are free to express their feelings peacefully, the government would not condone any resort to violence.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the governor also put all the security agencies operating in the state on high alert to avert any breakdown of law and order.

The statement also quoted the governor as urging the people to ensure they use their Permanent Voters Cards to usher in a responsible government in the forthcoming general election, adding that resorting to violence breeds other problems.

According to him, the Omituntun Mass Transit Buses would be deployed to more routes within the state for free, in order to ameliorate the suffering of the people.

The governor also said that the state was also working with Chairmen of local governments to provide immediate palliatives for the vulnerable people in order to alleviate the hardships that the twin scarcity of naira and fuel have brought upon them.

He urged all law-abiding citizens and residents of the state to go about their lawful activities peacefully.

The governor said: “My Dear Good People of Oyo State. I am addressing you today because of the prevailing conditions in our state and country that have led to protests and riots, especially in Ibadan.

“First, let me say that I understand the need for these protests. When citizens get pushed to the wall, there is only so much that they can take. “The continuous fuel scarcity and the scarcity of the naira have led to slow economic activities. I must repeat, I understand, and I feel your pain.

“I have always maintained that peaceful protests are fine. When things are not going how we want them to go, we have a right and even a responsibility to protest.

“Let me also state that while we are protesting, we must remember how easily a peaceful protest can turn violent and lead to the loss of lives and property.

The violence that erupted in parts of Ibadan today (Friday) is condemnable and will not be tolerated.

“In response to this, I have suspended all campaign activities forthwith. I have also met with the heads of security agencies in Oyo State to restore calm and maintain the peace in our dear state.

“Violence cannot and will not solve our problems, it only creates new ones. We have another opportunity in a few weeks to move this country in a new direction. Use your PVC, not violence.

“We must not allow elements within us who have other motives to take advantage of peaceful protests to perpetrate evil or push their agendas.

“I urge all law-abiding citizens and residents of the state to go about their lawful activities. All our security agencies are on high alert and so, peaceful residents of the state have no cause to fear.

“As a palliative measure, I have directed that the Omituntun Mass Transit Buses should be deployed to more routes within the state for free. “We are also working with Local Government Chairmen to see what immediate palliatives we can make available to the most vulnerable amongst us to alleviate the hardships that the twin scarcity of fuel and the naira have brought upon our people.

“Once again, we have another opportunity to put an end to oppressive systems and that is through the ballot. For now, I urge everyone to remain calm as we are doing our best to mitigate the hardships.”
