John Obi Mikel, the former Nigerian and Chelsea midfielder, has made a disclosure about his father’s release from kidnappers.
He disclosed that he paid some “crazy amount of money” to get his dad, Pa Michael, out of the kidnapper’s den in 2018.
The football star made this known while speaking with Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport.
His father, Pa Michael Obi was kidnapped along with his driver, Ishaya John, along the Markurdi – Enugu road in 2018 while on their way from Jos in a grey coloured Toyota Prado jeep.
Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, had in 2018 said he was informed about his father’s kidnap about four hours before Nigeria’s final World Cup match against Argentina.
Mikel noted that he received the shocking news while travelling on the team bus to the stadium in St Petersburg.
According to him, a family member had called and told him that he had to call the kidnappers on a designated number. After he did so, he was ordered to pay a ransom.
He further explained that although he was distraught by the news, he had to put it aside and play the match.
“I was emotionally distraught and I had to make the decision about whether I was mentally ready to play. I was confused. I did not know what to do but, in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down. I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff and only a very tight circle of my friends knew.
“I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody. I also did not want to discuss it with the coach [Gernot Rohr] because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to him or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game. As much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not,” he said.
However, days after, they were rescued by the police, around 2:30 pm in Egede Udi forest of Enugu State.
“The abductors then started calling the families to demand a ransom of N10 million but the operatives acting on intelligence information swooped on them. A gun duel ensued which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued,” the police said in a statement.

“They [the kidnappers] said listen, we know, it is Mikel he would pay. If he doesn’t, we are going to shoot his dad. They said they had nothing to lose. They would shoot my dad and dump him somewhere,” Mikel Obi said.
“It was horrible. After the game, I got back on the phone, tried to negotiate with them and spoke with them. They were calling some ridiculous amount of money for a start, and in the end, I still had to pay some crazy amount of money to get my dad out.
“Even now, I still go through it. Even when I got a flashback, I had to speak to the guys on the phone. There was a gunpoint at his head. They said they would shoot him, kill him. I have not told my kids about it, but a few months ago, they looked at my phone and saw the news about it. Obviously, I have not told them about it because they are young kids, 7 years, but one day when they grow up, I will be able to share the story with them,” he said.

Lionel Messi, the Paris Saint-Germain forward, on Saturday, surpassed Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo’s record as he scored in the French Ligue 1 away clash against OGC Nice.
Messi netted in the 26th minute of the encounter to give the Parisians the lead.
The Argentina World Cup winner has now scored 702 goals in Europe’s top five leagues, one more than Ronaldo.
Messi has reached the mark in 105 fewer games than the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star.
The 35-year-old scored 672 goals in 778 games during his spell at Barcelona.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has now netted 30 goals for PSG, having played 68 games, including the Nice game.

Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, has explained why he has never been sacked.
He said he has never been sacked throughout his managerial career because his teams “win a lot of games.”
Guardiola was reacting to the fact that 12 Premier League bosses have lost their jobs this season.
Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers were the latest to be fired last Sunday.
Potter was dismissed as Chelsea boss after six months in charge, with the Blues sitting in 11th place in the Premier League.
His sacking came hours after Rodgers’ four-year stint at Leicester ended with the Foxes wallowing in the relegation zone.
Guardiola decided to step down from his previous jobs at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
“I will tell you a secret. We win games. If we don’t win games, I would be sacked. It’s not because my hair is better than the other ones. I’m not sacked because we win a lot of games,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

Kylian Mbappe, the Paris Saint-Germain striker, has slammed his club.
He hit out at the club after they released a video to promote season ticket sales.
Mbappe insists the Ligue 1 club shot the video without informing him how the interview would be used.
The video released on Wednesday features snippets from an interview with the France international.
It does not feature other big names at PSG like Lionel Messi and Neymar and links to the ticketing section on PSG’s website.
“I’ve just taken part in the season ticketing campaign of the club for 2023-24.
“At no moment was I informed of the content of the interview… It looked like a basic interview at a club marketing day.
“I do not agree with the video that was published. This is why I am fighting for individual image rights. PSG is a great club and a great family, but it is certainly not Kylian Saint-Germain,” Mbappe said on social media.

Djalminha, a former Brazil attacking midfielder, has explained that he respects Barcelona legend Ronaldinho more than Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi and Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to Djalminha, Ronaldinho won everything during his time at Barcelona.
He said Ronaldinho played his heart out during his time at Barcelona, and even Messi has not yet done any better.
Djalminha told Brazilian outlet UOL: “Of the younger generation, [Ronaldinho] is the one I respect the most.
“More than everyone else. More than Messi, more than Cristiano. Take his two years at Barcelona and see if Messi did what he did.
“He won the Champions League, won the Spanish league, won everything, and put on a hell of a show and played like hell.”
