FG Remains Mum Five Weeks After Recall Of Ambassadors

The Tinubu-led Federal government has remained silent on its next move, five weeks after it recalled ambassadors.

Even though there are still 21 days before the October 31 deadline for their return, speculations are that the federal government might have made a U-turn to extend its policy on the recall.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu, on September 2, recalled all of Nigeria’s ambassadors, both career and non-career envoys. Nigeria has no fewer than 300 foreign missions.

Five weeks after this, the federal government has remained silent, and this has left envoys in a fix as to what is happening.

According to Vanguard, sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said there was no going back on the recall, But an ambassador who pleaded anonymity told the platform that there is nothing on the ground to facilitate the envoy’s return on or before October 31.

A senior staff of the Foreign Affairs Ministry who craved anonymity said: “So far, no machinery has been put in motion for return of the envoys.

“Under normal circumstances, each envoy who is expected to return by the end of this month, by now, should have received his or her AIEs (Authority to incur Expenditures) for his or her passages.

“it is traditional and very important to have swiftly sent these AIEs to ambassadors and other envoys because you don’t expect an ambassador to wake up one morning and just jump into a flight without advanced booking as well as making arrangements to airfreight his or her belongings home.”

She said the government might have had a change of heart, “if not, by now, they (envoys) would have equally received cash backing.”

The AIE explains the details of the entitlement of each envoy in terms of their passages and other travel arrangements to return to Nigeria.

Meanwhile, a serving female ambassador told the platform, she was yearning to come home to reunite with her family, but she can’t because even if she did on her own accord, it might take her about five years to get her money from the government.

She said, “We are in the dark over the whole issue. I asked some foreign affairs ministry officials, one of them said” “Why don’t you stay there? Why are you in a hurry to return?

‘’They don’t expect you to trek home. Stay put until the government makes up its mind to send you money to come back or extend your stay.

“Some of them advised us to stay put until the government does the needful by sending us AIEs for our passages.”

Another diplomat, who pleaded anonymity, said he expected the ministry to be tidying up the arrangement by now.

Asked if the October 31 date would be met, even as the ministry is yet to conclude the official document, he said: “They (envoys) were given October ending, so they should be preparing by now. That is part of the bureaucracy, but that shouldn’t be a problem.

“The ministry has the right to ask the officer to come back, but the ministry also has the obligation to pay before they come back.”

However, this platform learned that the federal government has an attitude of owing envoys after they have been recalled back home.

Commenting on that, a diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the ministry has a penchant for such behaviour.

He said: “The ministry had been doing that for years, but it is wrong that an officer will be on course and he has not been paid for nine months.

“How does the ministry expect the officer to feed himself and his family and do other things? The ministry is right to ask the officer to come back, but the ministry also has the obligation to pay them before they come back. Is the ministry going to pay them in dollars or naira when the expenditure is in dollars?”

Why Obi Can’t Work With Tinubu’s Government — Labour Party

The Labour Party has said it is impossible for its presidential candidate, Peter Obi to work with President Bola Tinubu’s government.
The party made the revelation in two separate interviews with the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh and the National Legal Adviser of LP, Kehinde Edun, according to a report by Punch.
The party’s position is coming six days after the former Anambra State governor shaded the president on Arise TV’s ‘Morning Show’ following the controversy surrounding his academic records at Chicago State University.
Obi stated that any leader who falsifies his credentials or age cannot be trusted to do the right thing and is unfit to lead the people.
He said, “We are at the point where we are challenging the process and that has to come to a logical end before any other thing. These are parts of what makes a nation. The processes through which people assume office are far more than what they do thereafter. It is important that people come in through the right door and not just jump in through the window and keep saying ‘Let’s move on.’

“The issue of qualification is the issue of leaders making statements and doing things that are honest and truthful. This is an issue of honour and integrity.

“If you look at what is happening in Nigeria today, there are so many issues of certificates, age, and all sorts of one falsification or the other with the leaders. There is no way people can do this and be able to do the right thing. That means they are living a falsified life.”
A few days after Obi’s scathing remark, his party also admonished the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, not to drag the LP candidate into his feud with the president.
The party was reacting to an earlier call by Atiku, for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to join his crusade in exposing the alleged dirty secrets of the president.
The reaction of LP was seen by some people as a possibility that Obi would prefer to work with Tinubu than team up with his former PDP ally, Atiku.
But the national legal adviser of LP insisted that such a figment of imagination can never come to reality, reiterating that Obi has already made his stance known.
He said, “I think Obi has something he is pursuing, especially when we are sure we won the election. So it will be out of place for us to now say we want to work with this government. As far as LP is concerned, we are waiting for the Supreme Court to set aside the decision of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal that will pronounce Obi as the winner. That’s what we are waiting for.

“This is why we cannot be talking about Obi, somebody who is the owner of the mandate, working with somebody who is a pretender to the office. Until we see to the end of this case at the Supreme Court, it is not over.”
Sharing the same sentiment, the party’s spokesman also insisted that the LP candidate can’t be distracted by such a notion as he is presently focused on reclaiming his ‘stolen mandate’ from the apex court.
“We are still in the process of reclaiming our stolen mandate through our appeal at the Supreme Court. There is no way our candidate can be seen working for this government. For now, he is focused on the appeal at the apex,” he said.

EFCC Speaks On Invasion Of Skales’ Home, Seeks Evidence

allegation that its operatives invaded the home of Nigerian singer, John Njeng-Ngeng, popularly known as Skales.
The agency denied the claim.
Recall that the singer had on Tuesday morning alleged that some EFCC officials invaded his home, while he was sleeping with his six-month-old baby.
He claimed, “So #officialEFCC pulled up to my house with 3 men with guns and some with sticks and hammers lol, they broke my back door while I was sleeping on the bed with my 6month old daughter, imagine I had a panic attack Cz of my health issues…. Is this not a crime?”

But in an exclusive phone call with The PUNCH, the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, stated that such claims by the singer were not true and unfounded.
Oyewale asserted that officials of the anti-graft agency do not conduct any raid and do not operate in such a manner.
He said, “Number 1, we don’t invade. Number 2, we don’t conduct any raids. Number 3, there are ways and rules to identify a regular EFCC operative.

“So, to all intents and purposes, all of his claims, they are totally removed from what an EFCC operation looks like.”
Oyewale also noted that the incident might be an allegation, as the invaders could be impersonators of the EFCC roaming around.
The EFCC Spokesman, therefore, called on the singer to come forward and provide evidence of his claims.
He added: “People can make allegations but the authenticity of the allegation viz a viz the reality on the ground concerning any organisation you’re talking about is important.

“There are impersonations all around, all over the place. So, they are not. We are very polite. We don’t do all those things.
“And I will want him to come forward, if he has photo evidence or video evidence, to show that’s it’s an EFCC thing, because we don’t have such things,” Oyewale added
