Why I Rap In Igbo – Phyno Opens Up

Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, the Nigerian indigenous rapper, who is popularly known as Phyno, has revealed why he raps in his native Igbo dialect.

He said he started his career rapping in English but later switched to Igbo because he wanted to offer something unique to the Western world.

Speaking in the latest episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Phyno stated that his upbringing also influenced his decision to rap in Igbo language.

He said, “Growing up, I listened to emcees that were very lyrical like the Busta Rhymes, the Jay-Zs, the 2Pacs, the Biggies and the rest. I listened to everything. I had that Western influence in my music but then at some point in my life when I was still trying to find myself, I was rapping in English, too.

“But when I got to a point where I had to make a career out of this, I asked myself a simple question, “What am I going to sell to the world? If I go to the UK, will I sell English to them? They own English language.’ If I go to America right now, I am selling Igbo to them. That’s what it’s. So you have to sell something that they don’t have. I can’t come to your country and sell what you already have. But if I sell what you don’t have, it will be unique.

“I grew up in a highlife influenced neighbourhood. I make sure that I incorporate all the influences into my music and art. I have started wearing the Igbo traditional attire because I have to look different, I have to represent my culture.”

I Was Accused Of Killing Mohbad – Actress, Iyabo Ojo Says

Iyabo Ojo, the popular Nollywood actress, has disclosed that her activism in seeking justice for the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad, attracted negative criticisms and weighty allegations against her.

Speaking recently on the ‘Glass House’ with AY, Ojo said she was accused of killing Mohbad.

She said she was also accused of using his death to chase clout.

The thespian said contrary to the allegations, she was genuinely interested in getting justice for the late music star.

Ojo said, “They were even insinuating that maybe I killed Mohbad. I wasn’t around when Mohbad died. I was not close to him. I didn’t really know him that much.

“My encounter with him was during One Africa music fest. For the few days that we were together, I just knew that he was a cool boy, had his own thing he was going through and doing his music.

“If I killed him, then why was I fighting for his body to be exhumed for autopsy? There was a time they said I was paid [for my activism in getting justice for Mohbad]. They also said I was looking for a political position.

“They even said I was using it for clout. There are so many things that have been said about me. But I am not bothered because that isn’t the case. All I did was just to help seek justice for the late singer.”

How I Struggled With Witchcraft Persona After Playing A Witch In Movie – Actress, Etinosa Idemudia

Nollywood actress Etinosa Idemudia has revealed how playing the role of a witch in a movie series affected her mental health, leading her to seek therapy in order to shake off the character’s persona.

She said, “The role an actor gets is a function of how the casting director perceives such actor. It is difficult to explain how the mind works, but after playing some characters, it rubs off on you.

“I remember playing a witch in the series Blood of Enogie for three months, and after we were done, I had to go for therapy to come out of that witchcraft persona. As funny as it may sound, it is real. There have been cases where actors fall in love with their on-screen romantic interest and even marry them in real life.”

Discussing her film projects, Etinosa highlighted that true stories often inspire her works.

She said, “At EtinosaTV, all movies are totally relatable because they are inspired by true-life stories. The movie Baby Elephant, for example, portrays the struggles of fat ladies and ladies with big stomachs who do not feel comfortable or beautiful because of constant societal body shaming and mockery from friends and family.”

When asked about boundaries in her craft, Etinosa asserted that she avoids roles that promote violence and dishonesty.

I Want To Remarry – Toke Makinwa Opens Up

Toke Makinwa, Nollywood actress, has expressed her desire to remarry.

The 40-year-old said marriage is one of the most beautiful institutions despite its challenges.

She spoke in a recent podcast interview with British-Nigerian media personality, Madame Joyce.

She said, “People always think I hate men or a feminist who bashes men. I have been married before and marriage is one of the most beautiful institutions.

“I see marriage like the relationship between siblings. If your siblings come to visit, the first couple of days are exciting. You guys wear matching pyjamas, sleep in the same bed, and catch up on all the lost years or lost moments. By the third day, it’s like, ‘Close my f*cking door. Who wore my shoes? Where are my earrings? Please, when are you going back to your house? Please, I am tired.’ And that was how I saw it.

“There were days when I would rush home to tell my ex-husband everything I had been through. And there were days when I woke up in the morning, I said, ‘God, you must hate me for me to marry this idiot. This is not life; this must be hell.’ That was how I saw it. And it didn’t work out many years ago. But I still fancy the institution. I do want to get married again.

“It hasn’t happened yet. I’m not ruling it out. I am just taking my time. Maybe it’s not God’s time yet. Whenever he is ready, I just hope I am not wrinkled [laughs].”

Toke Makinwa was previously married to businessman, Maje Ayida. They got married in 2014, but their marriage ended in 2017.

Recently there were reports that she has tied the knot with with her rumoured longtime partner, Farouk Umar.

But the actress swiftly debunked the rumours, claiming they were just “besties” and that the alleged wedding ceremony was her thanksgiving event.
