Alleged $4.5bn Fraud: EFCC Pressured My Client To Implicate Emefiele – Lawyer Alleges

Mr. Nnamdi Offial, counsel to the second defendant, Henry Omoile, in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of pressuring his client to implicate the former apex bank chief.

Offial made the claim while testifying in a trial-within-trial, which Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court ordered to determine whether Omoile’s statement to the EFCC was made voluntarily.

He alleged that EFCC investigators offered multiple promises to Omoile, including bail and the possibility of avoiding charges, if he cooperated by providing incriminating information against Emefiele.

Emefiele and Omoile are facing charges of accepting gratification, receiving gifts through agents, corruption, and fraudulent receipt of property.

The EFCC also accused them of conferring corrupt advantage on associates, contrary to the Corrupt Practices Act, 2000. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty.

At the resumed hearing, Offial told the court that Omoile informed him that the head of the EFCC interrogation team assured him of leniency if he implicated the first defendant.

He added that the interrogation was conducted in a question-and-answer format, where his client had to respond “satisfactorily” before being allowed to write down his answers.

“On several occasions, questions were put to the second defendant and he answered, but he was not allowed to write them down because the answers did not conform to what the interrogators wanted him to say. I objected to this many times,”
 Offial said.

He further recounted that the session on February 26, 2024, ended with investigators informing him that Omoile would be detained because they were not finished with him.

Offial also described an incident on February 27, 2024, when he questioned why his client was being interrogated in his absence.

This, he claimed, led to a confrontation with one of the officers, identified as Davide, who allegedly ordered him out of the premises.

“I reported the incident to the head of the team, who advised me not to worry and to sit in the waiting area. I was not allowed to render services to my client until about 8pm, when he was taken back to the detention centre,”
 he said.

He later learned that Omoile was being detained for refusing to cooperate, which prompted him to apply for bail from the EFCC zonal head.

Offial said his client spent 21 days in detention before filing a fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court, Lagos, where Justice Muslim Hassan granted bail but ordered that Omoile be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until bail conditions were perfected.

Under cross-examination by the prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Offial admitted that Omoile had been cautioned in his presence and that he signed the caution.

He also acknowledged that he participated in the statement-taking process and was aware that whatever his client wrote could be used against him in court.

The defence witness further admitted that he did not file any petition against the EFCC over the investigators’ alleged conduct, and that the Federal High Court did not find the commission guilty of any misconduct in the fundamental rights suit.

He also conceded that his client was not harassed in his presence during interrogation.

Justice Oshodi adjourned the matter to January 16 for the continuation of the trial-within-trial.

I’m Not Your Father – Davido Denies Paternity Claim Of Alleged Daughter, Rejects DNA Test Appeal

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has denied being the father of a teenage girl, Anu, who claims he is his child.

In a statement on social media, Davido rejected Anu’s claims and accused her mother of being an “obsessed fan” who is manipulating her daughter.

Anu posted a message on Instagram requesting a DNA test to establish her identity.

She shared her struggles with bullying and mental anguish, saying classmates mocked her claims of being Davido’s daughter.

Anu wrote: “This year I become a teenager. My mom and grandma have always educated me on being a responsible teen. No drugs, alcohol, bad company and bad behavior. Today I drafted a letter I wrote from the depth of my heart not with help from my relatives.

“As I grow older I want to establish my identity. I was bullied in school since I was 6-year-old and cried home daily. Other students laughed at me when I told them my father was Mr David Adeleke. I went through a lot of mental anguish and visited a medical professional to protect my mental health. It was a sad challenging time in my life.

“This page was not online for 5 years as my mom never updated this account since it was handed over to us. We went through a lot. Despite the challenges, I still excelled to the top of the class and became the class prefect. We posted some of my report cards on this page. Now that I’m in secondary school and still excelling in my studies, I don’t talk about my family history anymore.

“However on that note as I transition into a young woman, I am respectfully asking Mr David Adeleke Singer @davido for a DNA test to establish my identity. This test is between my dad and I. It is something I want. It is something that’s the right thing to do. Please sir, consider my request once you read this post. I also sent it to your DM.

“Thank you to all Nigerians who have given me emotional support for the last 7 years. This DNA test is the right thing to do for me.”

However, Davido said he has already undergone five DNA tests, all of which were negative, and challenged Anu’s claims.

The singer expressed frustration and disappointment, saying he’s chosen three hospitals for the tests, and Anu’s team chose two, all with the same negative result.

“I’VE TAKEN 5 DNA TESTS ALL NEGATIVE I AM NOT YOUR FATHER … NEVER EVEN MET UR MOM .. SHES AN OBSESSED FAN LYING TO YOU … THIS NEEDS TO STOP I ACTUALLY HAVE CHILDREN .. STOP THIS NONSENSE. Yes I chose 3 hospitals and they chose their own two hospitals .. all came out Negative .. “

Davido threatened to take action against Anu’s mother, saying she needs to be held accountable.

“This is the last time I’m speaking on this nonsense. Never met the bitch … except when went For the DNA … very stupid behavior I will soon treat their FK … 5 fucking hospitals just to be clear .. the mom needs to go to jail … I don’t blame the poor girl ..”,
he added.

AFCON: ‘NFF Is A Very Unserious Organization’ – BBNaija Star, Tacha Blows Hot After Super Eagles Loss To Morocco

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Natasha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has criticized the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) over the Super Eagles’ defeat to Morocco.

Recall that Super Eagles lost 4-2 on penalties to the hosts in Rabat, effectively ending their dream of a fourth continental title.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, Tacha joined other Nigerians in condemning the selection of two referees from rival countries for Wednesday’s game.

Describing the NFF as a very unserious organisation, the reality TV star said they would have petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to change the referees.

She wrote, “The @thenff is a very unserious organization. Two referees from rival countries. Ghana and South Africa How?? The moment those referees were announced, the NFF should have petitioned CAF! And even if CAF refuses to change them, the petition alone puts referees on CHECK.

“But Instead, silence. And what did we get? One of the worst officiated games in the history of football. The referee disrupted the rhythm of the match nonstop. Fouls were given that made no sense. Even Moroccan players sometimes looked unsure what the whistle was for. That’s how bad it was.

“This wasn’t “home advantage.” This was shambolic officiating. If the @thenff has any sense, they will petition CAF, demand a review, and question whether that referee should be handling games at this level at all. CAUSE performances like that damage the credibility of African football.”

It’s Really Painful To Have Refs Like Ayi – Osayi-Samuel Slams CAF Over Ghanaian Coach

Nigerian fullback Bright Osayi-Samuel has criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for appointing Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi to officiate the Super Eagles’ semifinal clash against Morocco.

Osayi-Samuel wondered why a game of such calibre would have been assigned to Ayi, who he described as appalling, to handle.

According to the Birmingham defender, the Ghanaian made wrong decisions during the match.

He was unhappy with some calls Ayi made which contributed to Nigeria’s loss.

Nigeria was eliminated from the competition after losing 4-2 in the penalty shootout, as the semifinal match ended without any goals scored during regular time.

The result ended the Super Eagles’ chance of winning their fourth AFCON title for the fourth time as they would have hoped.

After the game, the defender talked to reporters in the mixed zone.

He said he was unhappy with the referee’s performance and claimed that a few incorrect decisions made the game harder to play.

“One thing I would say is that the referee was really bad. I’m not saying that was the reason we lost. He is making really bad choices and it’s really tough to watch because we have referees like this in big games like today.

“But Morocco did really well,” Osayi-Samuel said.

The fullback said losing was really tough, but he praised Nigeria’s defense for how well they held up against Morocco.

The Super Eagles will now focus on the third-place playoff against Egypt, where they will compete for the bronze medal.
