Shock As Fire Outbreak Hits Catholic Church In Wukari

A fire outbreak has once again been reported at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Wukari in the Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, sparking serious concern among members of the Catholic community and residents of the area.

The inferno happened a few months after the local government council secretariat was engulfed by fire.

The incident which occurred late night, reportedly engulfed parts of the Cathedral in what witnesses described as a sudden and distressing development.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown, while the extent of damage and possible casualties have yet to be officially confirmed.

The development comes at particularly a difficult time for the Wukari Catholic Diocese, which is still grappling with the aftermath of recent incidents that reportedly led to the destruction of lives, parish churches, a rectory, and other valuable properties within the diocese.

Preliminary information indicates that the latest incident occurred about an hour before reports began circulating, leaving members of the Catholic faithful shocked and saddened as the day ended with the unfortunate development.

Despite the confusion that followed the outbreak, Fr. James Oliver, a priest in residence at the Cathedral, reportedly acted bravely during the incident.

He was said to have successfully rescued the Blessed Sacrament unharmed before the fire spread further within the church premises.

Members of the Catholic community and residents of Wukari have since expressed deep cincern over the situation. Many have taken to prayers, asking for God’s mercy and protection while hoping that no lives were lost in the incident.

Local authorities and emergency responders are expected to assess the damage and commence investigations to determine the root cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, some members of the church who spoke with Daily Post via telephone expressed concern that the situation might have been better managed if functional fire service vehicles were available within the council area.

According to them, the absence of operational fire service trucks across local government councils in the state has contributed to the difficulty in controlling fire outbreaks.

They noted that Wukari, where the incident occurred, is also the hometown of the incumbent state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas.

The residents argued that the inability of the state government to adequately equip fire services across local government areas has made several infernos across the state difficult to contain.

Don’t Reduce Something Sacred To A Joke – Actress Juliana Olayode Criticizes Misuse Of ‘Holy Spirit Carry Me’ Trend

Nigerian actress, Juliana Olayode has voiced her dissatisfaction over the way some social media users are using the “Holy Spirit, carry me” trend.

Olayode, on Instagram, emphasised that while asking the Holy Spirit for assistance is acceptable, captions referencing personal attributes such as weight or physical appearance are wrong, citing examples like “Holy Spirit no carry me because of my big nyash”.

She questioned whether those using the trend understand who they are addressing and urged respect and reverence towards the Holy Spirit.

She wrote, “It’s absolutely okay for us to ask the Holy Spirit to carry us; that’s a powerful prayer and a beautiful song.

“What I don’t quite understand are some of the captions that are turning it into a cruise. Seeing captions like Holyspirit no carry me because of my big nyash, because I get weight, because he no like small things, makes me cringe.

Do we know who we’re talking about here? The Holyspirit?!

“Please, let’s be careful. Let’s not reduce something sacred to a joke. Please, let’s honour and revere the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not for trends or a punchline for attention. Let’s honour Him.

“I know we like to joke and catch cruise online, and sometimes it’s really just vibes. But I’ve been feeling a bit uncomfortable; we Christians take too many things with levity. People of other religions wouldn’t dare mention the name of their prophet or god without honour. We throw the name of JESUS around with no regard for the Holy Spirit? No, please, it’s a No! No!

“Everything can’t always be fun and games, not when it concerns someone so precious, not when it concerns THE HOLYSPIRIT. For me personally, we can make jokes, do fun things, and be joyful without being careless. Just sharing my heart”.

The trend, which has gained popularity on TikTok, involves reaching out to the Holy Spirit, often depicted as a bird.

Several notable actresses, including Funke Akindele and Mercy Johnson, have participated in the trend.

BREAKING: Super Eagles Out As FIFA Confirms DR Congo Spot In 2026 World Cup

Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have all but vanished after FIFA confirmed the final line-up for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, with DR Congo selected as Africa’s representative.

In an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the competition, FIFA detailed the tournament format and listed the six participating nations. DR Congo’s inclusion leaves no room for Nigeria, whose football federation had challenged their defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025.

The Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive tie, which ended 1-1 before Nigeria lost on penalties. The appeal sought to overturn the result and secure the Super Eagles’ place in the inter-continental play-offs.

However, FIFA’s latest communication does not refer to any changes to the qualified teams, signaling that the original result will stand and confirming Nigeria’s elimination.

The Nigeria Football Federation had filed a formal petition alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive play-off, which Nigeria lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The protest sought to overturn the result and reinstate the Super Eagles into the inter-continental play-offs.

However, FIFA’s latest communication does not refer to any amendment to the qualified teams, strongly indicating that the result stands.

In its statement, FIFA confirmed, “The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities.”

The world football governing body added, “All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”

Israel/Iran War: We Didn’t K!ll Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei – US Says

The United States has denied involvement in the de@th of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with Pentagon officials saying he was k!lled by an Israeli strike and not as part of an American military operation.

Pentagon top official, Elbridge Colby, said that the Iranian leader was k!lled as a result of an Israeli attack.

Colby told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the strike which k!lled Khamenei and other top Iranian leaders was not part of the U.S. military campaign.

Colby said, “Those are Israeli operations,” as he pushed back when lawmakers asked if changing the regime was a goal of U.S. actions.

This appeared to have contradicted President Donald Trump’s earlier comment when he said Khamenei could not get around the U.S. intelligence and advanced tracking systems.

He also mentioned that, along with other leaders who were k!lled, Khamenei and others did not have much control because the US was working closely with Israel.

However, Colby said the main targets were Iran’s missile capabilities, which have increased a lot, along with their ability to build those weapons and parts of their navy.

He said those goals were “doable and reasonable targets that can be achieved.”

US and Israel attacks on Iran over the weekend k!lled Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei d!ed alongside his daughter, grandchild, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law were also k!lled in the strike.

The Israeli army said that Ali Shamkhani, a top advisor to Khamenei, and the head of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Pakpour, were also k!lled in the strikes.

US said that over 49 top officials of the Iranian military have been taken out so far.

AGF Fagbemi Takes Over Abubakar Malami’s Prosecution

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, has officially assumed responsibility for prosecuting his immediate predecessor, Abubakar Malami, in the terrorism and illegal firearms case filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, took over the trial from the DSS on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

At the Wednesday’s proceedings where prosecution of Malami and his son Abdulazeez Malami was to kick-start, Fagbemi through the Director of the Public Prosecution of the Federation, DPPF, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, announced appearance in the matter.

He told Justice Joyce Abdulmalik that the trial cannot proceed because Fagbemi has just taken over the prosecution.

According to him, the case file has just been delivered to the AGF and he needed time to study it to be able to take a well informed decision.

Malami represented by Adedayo Adedeji, SAN, expressed disgust over the delay in opening up the trial and asked the Judge to strike out the charge at the next adjourned date should the federal government come up with any excuse.

Responding, the DPPF said that the request for striking out of the charge was premature and urged the Judge to ignore it.

After taking arguments, Justice Abdulmalik fixed March 10 for trial to be opened by the AGF.

The Court had on February 27 admitted Malami and his son, Abdulaziz to N200m bail, with two sureties, each one of whom must own landed property either in Maitama or Asokoro.

Justice Abdulmalik had said that the title of the property must be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court along with valid international passports.

The sureties were also ordered to depose to affidavit of means and submit their two recent passport photographs with the court.

Besides, Malami and his son were also ordered to submit their international passports and recent passport photographs to the court.

The DSS had arraigned Malami and his son, Abdulaziz on a five-count charge bordering on terrorism and illegal firearms possession.

Malami and Abdulaziz are equally accused of warehousing firearms in their residence at Gesse Phase II Area, Birain Kebbi LGA, Kebbi State without lawful authority.
