IMF Upgrades Nigeria’s 2026 Growth Outlook To 4.4%

The International Monetary Fund has raised Nigeria’s 2026 economic growth projection to 4.4 percent, attributing the upgrade to stronger macroeconomic conditions and continued reform efforts.

The revised projection was contained in the IMF’s January 2026 World Economic Outlook Update, titled “Global Economy: Steady amid Divergent Forces.”

The Fund expects Nigeria’s economy to follow a steady expansion path, growing from 4.1 per cent in 2024 to 4.2 per cent in 2025, before accelerating to 4.4 per cent in 2026. The new figure represents a 0.2 percentage point upward revision from the IMF’s October 2025 forecast.

According to the Fund, Nigeria’s stronger outlook aligns with broader growth trends across sub-Saharan Africa, where economic expansion is projected to reach 4.6 per cent in both 2026 and 2027. The IMF attributed the regional improvement to ongoing macroeconomic stabilisation and reform efforts across key economies.

At the global level, the IMF projected economic growth of 3.3 per cent in 2026, noting that the world economy remains resilient despite persistent uncertainties. The Fund said the outlook reflects a balance of opposing forces, with the impact of changing trade policies being offset by increased investment in technology and artificial intelligence.

For Nigeria, the IMF identified energy prices as a key factor influencing the 2026 outlook. It projected that energy commodity prices could decline by about seven per cent in 2026, largely due to weak global demand. However, the report noted that oil prices continue to find support from coordinated production management by OPEC+ and crude stockpiling by China, helping to limit downside pressures.

Despite the improved forecast, the IMF warned that risks to the outlook remain tilted to the downside. These include escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine with possible spillovers to global supply chains, renewed trade tensions and protectionist policies that could heighten uncertainty, and high public debt levels and fiscal deficits that may push long-term interest rates higher.

To sustain growth, the IMF urged Nigerian authorities to rebuild fiscal buffers and press ahead with structural reforms. It stressed the importance of central bank independence for maintaining macroeconomic stability, particularly in a volatile global environment. The Fund also cautioned that any discretionary fiscal support should be carefully targeted and time-bound to ensure it remains temporary.

The IMF concluded that Nigeria’s ability to achieve its 2026 growth target will depend on the consistent implementation of reforms and the country’s capacity to withstand domestic and external shocks as the global economy continues to adjust.

Why I Will Never Stop Having Children – Ex-President Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former Nigerian President, has stated that he will “never stop having children.”

Obasanjo explained that although he no longer gives birth and his children are now adults, the circle of life continues through his grandchildren and subsequent generations.

He made the remarks while hosting the leadership of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN), led by its President, Dr. Ekanem Ekure, at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday.

According to him, the continuity of generations makes the protection and wellbeing of children a collective and lifelong responsibility.

“I am no longer giving birth to children, and my children are now adults. But my children are still having children, and my grandchildren are having children, so I will never stop having children.

“Because when I stop, my children will not stop, and when my children stop, my grandchildren will not stop, and the cycle continues,” Obasanjo said.

He emphasised that the future of nations depends on how well children are protected now, describing them as the foundation of every civilisation, and called for improved care, survival, and development.

Obasanjo applauded pediatricians for their vital role in saving children’s lives, describing pediatrics as a distinct and challenging medical speciality.

The former president pledged his support for programs meant to enhance the lives of children in Nigeria and around the world, and accepted PAN’s request to act as an advocate for child health and wellness.

“The problem of dealing with children is that they are not like adults, so you must be able to feel for them. If it were myself coming to you as an adult, you would ask me where I am having the pain, is it the right or the left, how do I feel at night, but children won’t be able to say all that.

“So your area of specialisation is therefore very unique. The task you have given me as an advocate for children is a task that I will easily accept.”

Earlier, Ekure praised Obasanjo as a global statesman whose voice is heard both domestically and internationally, maintaining that PAN specifically sought his assistance due to the escalating child health challenges.

Late Nigerian Singer, Destiny Boy’s Mother Reveals The Real Cause Of His De@th (Video)

Saida, the mother of late Afrobeat singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has opened up about the circumstances surrounding her son’s de@th.

The singer, who rose to fame in 2019 with his Fuji cover of Davido’s hit song If, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2025, after battling a long-term mysterious illness known as “Ogu oru,” which frequently caused seizures.

Speaking in a video that trended on Monday, Saida explained that her son’s condition had been closely managed by the family, traditional healers, and clerics.

She said the illness had almost taken a severe toll on him, but they kept it hidden from the public due to his superstar status.

“Destiny went to rest. When he gave birth to his child, about four days after the naming, we went to Oba Edu Ifayomi, who initiated him traditionally. The man likes him as his son, so that’s why he told us to come and collect a ram for the baby’s naming ceremony. It was then that the sickness caught up with him, causing him to fall.

“It was there that we took him to the hospital. Oba Edu said we should ensure he’s properly treated and that he will take care of himself. He kept sending us money even when he was transferred to about two other hospitals. When we saw the trend of the sickness, we told him that we should go traditional, and he said we should bring him to his place. I was the one he even gave the soap to bathe him.

“We returned, and he was fine. The sickness he battled with was ‘Ogu oru,’ which caused him to have seizures. The sickness had almost run him mad. We were the ones who always ensured that he didn’t run out in the process of calming him.”

She further dismissed rumours linking Destiny Boy to money rituals, saying: “Destiny Boy was not involved in money rituals. Those spreading such misinformation are just seeking attention from his de@th.”

Recalling his last days, she added: “On Saturday, he still bought things for people, greeted his fans, and said he had a show on Sunday. Even then, the seizure caught him again.”

Saida also recounted the family’s efforts to seek traditional treatment, including guidance from Oba Edu Ifayomi, who had been closely involved in his care.

The singer had recently celebrated the birth of his first child in November 2024.

Reports by the Ogun State Police Command stated that investigations into his de@th are ongoing and that further updates will be provided.

My Kids Are Bullied In School – Veteran Actress, Mercy Johnson Cries Out Over False Rumors (Video)

Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson has revealed that her children are facing bullying at school due to false narratives circulating about her on social media.

The actress disclosed this on Monday morning while speaking about the negative impact of false news against her on social media.

This came a few days after she was dragged online for arresting a Tiktoker who defamed her and her husband with a rumor allegedly reported by popular blogger, Cutie Juls.

However, revealing her reason for making the arrest, the actress in a video on her Instagram page explained that her children are being bullied in school because she is being tagged as a witch by trolls on the Internet.

Warning netizens to keep her family name out of their mouth, Mercy alleged that some of the Nigeria blogs publishing false news against her are owned by her colleagues.

While threatening that he who alleged must prove in court, she noted that “Please I’m begging you because subsequently, I’m not going to listen to anybody. I’m going to let the law take its full course.

“I don’t understand why you people love to tear down and destroy. I have kids. When you write these lies, I have teenagers who are being bullied in school because of the things that you write. There are parents who tell their kids not to let my kids touch their school bags because I’m a witch. I just need my name out of your mouth. This is off for now, but every other person who has alleged must prove. So, I still have more cases for 2026 because I won’t let my kids get bullied because of your lies.

“I have always been in my lane. My priorities are my husband and my kids. Nothing concerns me and una. I don’t care who is doing better. Please leave my name, my husband’s name out of your mouth. She’s off but that doesn’t make my other cases off, they are still on, and I’m going about it according to the law. How can you not know that actresses own these blogs?

“Actresses owned these blogs, colleagues owned these blogs, people who just don’t like you own these blogs, and they can be paid to say whatever. You have seen it before. People have come out to accuse bloggers of collecting money and writing things they want them to write.

“When I was getting married, I don’t think I had an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) with anybody to say we’re going to go in there, I’m not going to stay married, I’m going to leave. I got in alone. So, it means I have no business with anybody.

“There’s no reason why you wake up every morning and count the years for me and say we’re going to try and break it up, because it’s something you can’t just break. Your lies, and propaganda are not working this side. I need no validation from anyone and I know who I am”, she said.
