Shallipopi, the popular Nigerian singer, has advised his fellow artistes to charge according to their values.
He stated this while addressing the debate over high fees charged by Nigerian artistes.
Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, the singer noted that an artiste’s value is linked to the success and reach of their music.
While disputing the notion that Nigerian artists have overpriced themselves out of the local market, he emphasised that artistes who achieve similar streaming as American artistes should charge comparable fees.
“It depends on your music and where it has gotten, that is what your price is going to be.
“If your music has gotten the same stream as an American artiste, you should be charging the same way they charge but if is not up to that you cannot overcharge,” he stated.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has explained why it has been unable to set a price for its petrol.
Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, in a statement on Thursday, noted that PMS market is strictly regulated, which is known to all oil marketers and stakeholders in the sector, hence the reason Dangote cannot determine, fix, or influence the product price.
He equally condemned the publication by an online media (not Vanguard), that Dangote group has fixed the price of its refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol at N897 per litre.
He noted that Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Limited, NNPCL, is yet to lift their product.
Read the statement bellow: “Our attention has been drawn to a headline “NNPC lifts Dangote Petrol, sells at N897 per litre” published in a news media (Not Vanguard), on 4 September 2024.
“We would like to state that NNPC has not commenced lifting of refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from our Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
“Therefore, the issue of fixing the price of petrol lifted from our refinery does not arise, as we are yet to finalize our contract with NNPC.
“The PMS market is strictly regulated, which is known to all oil marketers and stakeholders in the sector, hence we cannot determine, fix, or influence the product price, which falls under the purview of relevant government authorities.
“We urge the public to disregard the headline as it is misleading and does not represent the true position in this matter.
“We are guaranteeing Nigerians of exceptionally high quality petroleum products that will be readily available all over the country”.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that it has provided 30 million barrels of crude to the Dangote refinery to date.
The Executive Vice President of NNPCL Downstream, Adedapo Segun, who disclosed this on Thursday on Arise Television, said plans were underway to supply an additional 17 million barrels to the refinery soon.
He said the company would supply 6.3 million barrels of crude in September and 11.3 million barrels in October.
“We have supplied about 30 million barrels to Dangote so far—6.3 million this month, and we will supply 11.3 million in October,” Segun stated.
He stated that the development was part of the Federal Government’s decision to sell crude to local refineries, adding that the 6.3 million barrels would be delivered in seven cargoes.
“The pump price today is not reflective of the market. NNPCL is the sole importer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the country, which is abnormal. We should be moving towards a situation where the free market determines prices,” he added.
He explained that the NNPCL’s role as the sole importer of petrol was not deliberate, but rather a response to market conditions.
“Let me put it into proper perspective. NNPC is not a regulator. We didn’t choose to be the sole importer. We don’t determine who participates in the market. We stepped in when others reduced their participation. It is not about us wanting to be monopolists,” Segun stated.
According to him, achieving a stable fuel supply and price requires ideal market conditions, including a more liquid foreign exchange market.
“Market conditions need to be ideal, and there needs to be FX liquidity,” he added, suggesting that broader economic reforms may be needed to address the fuel pricing issue,” he said.

Korede Bello, the popular Nigerian singer, has opened up on why he left Don Jazzy-led Mavins Records.
Recall that Bello signed with Mavins in February 2014 but exited the label in 2021.
He said, “I was at a season in my life where I needed to metamorphose, to explore my inner worth, to do introspection, understand myself, understand meaning more, and reconnect to my why.
“Because I was at a stage where I started to feel like a product that is just there [at Mavins Records] to make money.
“You lose sight of what matters when you chase after the next hit, after the next whatever it is that can get you into conversations. So a lot of artists are addicted to that circle.”
