Why I Prefer Traditional Worship to Christianity, Islam — Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has opened up that he prefers traditional Orisa worshipping to Christianity and Islam.
According to him, the deepness of faith in Islam and Christianity doesn’t match that of Orisa worshipping for him, adding that Orisa fascinated him a lot more.
Soyinka added that Orisa worshipping is one of the African religions that eschews violence and is more creative.
“I was fortunate to be born in two worlds – the Christian world and traditional Orisa worshippers. My grandfather, until he – poor man – also got converted – he was an Orisa person and a chief, and his (grandfather’s) side (of Orisa) fascinated me a lot more,” the playwright told CNN’s Larry Madowo, during an interview.
He added, “For me, it (Orisa worshipping) was more artistic, creative, and also more mysterious. I don’t find much of the mysterious in Christianity and even less in Islam and that is for a simple reason that I didn’t grow up in a Muslim environment.
 
“Orisa is open, and very ecumenical and that is why these foreign religions were able to penetrate it and even distort the truth. Because of the generosity of this spirit (Orisa), it is not violent. It is one of those African religions which eschew violence.
 
“I don’t believe in the Islamic or Christian God and for the adherents of these religions if that makes me an atheist, so I say, I am an atheist. I insisted that all human beings have a certain spiritual core in their being, I believe myself to be a more spirit-sensitive person.”
 
The literary icon also revealed that he said he doesn’t like to watch anything adapted from his life or works.
 
“Let me put it this way, turning anything in my life into what other people can watch pains me. It makes me extremely uncomfortable. It’s wrong to say it’s terrific, let me just say I’m detached from it.
 
“It takes me a while to bring myself to watch me.”

I Don’t Believe Wizkid And Davido’s Beef Is Real – Ladipoe

Nigerian rapper, Oladipoe has stated that he doesn’t believe that the beef between Wizkid and Davido is real.
He stated this during an interviw with with City 105.1FM.
According to him, they could be using the beef as a strategy to promote something.
The rapper stated that he has seen it before and stated that it could be same thing playing out again.
In Ladipoe’s words:
“Honest truth, honestly, I have no idea. And why I say so is because this is not the first time that there has been something like this between these two juggernaut artistes y’know. So, who is to say? And I’m not personally close to either of them to be able to look behind the veil. I’ve been somebody that has gotten to admire them from afar. I’ve definitely shaken Wizkid’s hand a couple of times. I’ve shaken David’s hand a couple of times. And in both ways, I respect them.
 
You know what I feel? I fall in the fanbase that feels that they are just too savvy and business minded to not one day say “pull up, Davido and Wizkid concert or Wizkid and Davido concert”. I just feel like una dey whine me. That’s my own personal feeling: una dey whine me. They are too big to not see the business opportunity in front of them. So, that’s my take. But whether it’s real or not, who is to say?
Beef for promoting stuff is an old tactic. It’s effective. I don’t love it personally, but it’s tried and tested, and it works. It’s not my preferred strategy, but it works.”

Prioritise Having Kids Over Marriage For Career Success – Laide Bakare to Ladies

Nollywood star, Laide Bakare has urged fellow women to prioritize having children over marriage.
She stated this in an interview with Nollywood On Radio.
The film star advised career-oriented single women to have children early if they desire to achieve long-term professional success.
Citing her personal experience, the actress argued that marriage is not necessary to start a family.
 
“If you are aspiring to be a superstar, successful in your career as a young girl, I would advise you to get married and have kids early,” she said.
 
“So that you can have the rest of your years to push your career because the family area is very important.
 
“I know that getting married very early may lead to divorce so I mean starting a family early.
 
“Maybe I should retract that because I do not mean marriage. I never thought of marriage. The time I had my first child, I just wanted a baby.”
Bakare clarified that her advice wasn’t about marriage but starting a family, emphasizing the importance of having children.
“So the advice is not to get married early but start having a family,” she said.
Bakare also revealed that she had a rift with colleague Eniola Badmus, who misunderstood the advice as a reference to her being childless.
 
“Recently, I saw Eniola Badmus so we wanted to continue our quarrel and she said I called her childless,” she added.
“So I told her I meant and only said start a family. I meant to start a family not go and get married, just have your kids. Not necessarily marriage but at least have kids.”

Former Liverpool Coach, Klopp Gets New Job

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has gotten a new appointment.
He has been appointed as head of football operations at Red Bull, which owns the Leipzig, Salzburg and New York clubs, the company said Wednesday.
Klopp left Liverpool at the end of last season after nine years in charge, during which he breathed new life into the club and won the Premier League and Champions League.
His announcement in January that he was leaving came as a shock to the club’s fans but Klopp said he was exhausted by the role.
The 57-year-old’s new job with the Austrian energy drinks giant does not involve hands-on coaching.
According to a statement released by the company, “Klopp will not interfere in the day-to-day business of the clubs, but rather take on a higher-level strategic position.”
Klopp himself said: “I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs.
 
“After nearly 25 years on the sidelines, I couldn’t be more excited to be involved in a project like this.”
 
The 57-year-old will start his tenure on January 1, 2025.
Sky Germany reports Klopp’s contract includes an exit clause which allows him to take over as manager of the German national side should he be approached.
Klopp spends much of his time at his home on the Spanish island of Majorca and retains a sponsorship role with German sportswear maker Adidas.
Hans-Joachim Watzke, the managing director of Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund, told AFP’s German sports subsidiary on Wednesday he had discussed the Red Bull role with him.
“As always, I wish Jurgen good luck in his new job,” Watzke said.
“It was no surprise to me because we talked about it personally,” he added.
Earlier this month, Klopp was presented with Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit.
In addition to their extensive football interests, Red Bull are the principal sponsor of the reigning Formula One champion team of Max Verstappen.

AFCON 2025Q: Nigeria vs Libya – Date, Time And Where To Watch

The eagerly awaited 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya’s Mediterranean Knights is scheduled to be held at Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo.

This match marks a key moment in Group D, as international football returns to the screen for fans across the continent.

After two matchdays, Nigeria leads the group, having secured four points, while Libya lags at the bottom with just one point.

The Super Eagles are in strong form, going undefeated in their first two qualifiers.

They opened their campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and followed up with a goalless draw against Rwanda.

Libya, however, has struggled in the group stages. The Mediterranean Knights earned a 1-1 draw in their home opener against Rwanda but suffered a defeat on the road against Benin, leaving them with one point in the standings.

Nigeria’s solid start in the qualifiers puts them in a favorable position to secure a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.

The Super Eagles also hold a psychological and historical advantage, having won all previous encounters with Libya.

Despite Nigeria being the favorites, they will be without their top forward, Victor Osimhen, who has been in exceptional form since joining Galatasaray. His absence may test the team’s attacking prowess.

I’ll Cooperate To Fish Out Those Threatening You – VDM Tells Falana

Social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse aka Verydarkman (VDM) has pledged to help Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana fish out individuals threatening to kill his daugher and burn down his office for threatening to sue the social activist.
In a video on Wednesday, VDM dissociated himself from the threat of harming the respected lawyer and his family.
”I want to say I am not aware and I don’t have knowledge of anyone sending threats to Femi Falana or any member of his family. Secondly, I will never be part of anybody sending any threatening messages to anyone in this country.
 
“What I will like to say is this: I am willing to cooperate and work with Uncle Femi to fish out whoever sent the message to him. Let the person come and answer why he or she would send something like that to him. Please, I don’t associate myself with things like that,” VDM said, adding that someone who wanted to worsen the relationship between him and Chief Falana must have been behind it.
He said he doubted if any of his genuine supporters would do such a thing and warned people to support any movement with wisdom.
He added: “I acknowledge one thing- Uncle Femi Falana is a legend for this game. It’s just unfortunate that this thing turns like this. E be like say na devil who just wan scatter scatter everything.”
 
He admonished his supporters to know that Femi Falana is a highly respected defender of the masses and good causes.
Chief Falana had threatened to sue VDM for defamation if he failed to publish a public apology in relevant media for which some individuals sent the threats to him and his daughter.
Falana also on Wednesday reacted to the threat in an interview with Channels by saying: “The only disturbing area in this scenario is a threat to me and one of my two daughters. Some of these guys who I believe are mentally deranged have dared me, saying if you go to court, we shall burn your office. They have also sent messages to one of my daughters that if your father goes to court we shall kill you! I beg your pardon, in this country! I just laughed and I told my girl, don’t worry I will take it up.”
