Iran War: Ex-Super Eagles Captain, Troost-Ekong Trapped In Qatar Amid US Attacks

William Troost‑Ekong,  a former Super Eagles captain, is reportedly stranded in Qatar, according to Soccernet.

Troost-Ekong recently signed for Al Ahli SC after leaving Saudi Arabia in January.

But as it stands, the 32-year-old cannot leave Qatar, amid the unfolding international crisis in the Middle East.

This is because football matches and flights are on hold.

There are growing military tensions between Iran and Israel in the Gulf.

Iran carried out strikes on key locations in retaliation to attacks it believes were carried out by the United States and Israel.

Qatar’s Defense Ministry also claimed its air defense system blocked missiles that were sent into the country, as part of a planned security measure.

After Qatar and nearby countries closed their airspace temporarily, many foreigners, travelers, and professional athletes are stuck in the country.

Who Is Ayatollah Arafi? 10 Things To Know About The New Iran Supreme Leader

Iran’s interim leadership council has named Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the clerical member of the body currently exercising the powers of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Arafi officially took on the role on March 1, 2026, under Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, which establishes a temporary leadership framework until the Assembly of Experts selects a new Supreme Leader.

Article 111 stipulates that in the event of the de@th or incapacitation of a Supreme Leader, a temporary leadership council assumes the responsibilities of the office until a permanent successor is chosen.

With Khamenei’s de@th, the interim council has now begun overseeing the functions traditionally exercised by Iran’s highest political and religious authority.

Arafi’s appointment places him at the centre of this sensitive transition, as the country navigates a period of political uncertainty.

As a senior Shi’a cleric, Arafi is widely regarded as a figure with influence across Iran’s major institutions, including the military establishment, the judiciary and the religious seminaries.

Until the Assembly of Experts concludes its deliberations and selects a permanent Supreme Leader, Arafi and other members of the interim council will collectively exercise the constitutional powers attached to the office.

Ten key facts about the acting Iranian leader:

1. Born in 1959 in Meybod, Yazd Province, Arafi rose through Iran’s clerical ranks over several decades.

2. Ayatollah Alireza Arafi practices Islam, follows the Twelver Shi’a denomination, adheres to Ja‘fari jurisprudence, and upholds the Usuli creed.

3. In Qom, he completed his primary school education. At the same time, he began his seminary courses and preliminary courses. Later, he also attended seminary courses and learned Arabic and English. Furthermore, he studied mathematics and philosophy. (Qom is widely regarded as Iran’s religious capital and a major centre of Shi’a scholarship).

4. Arafi has attained the rank of mujtahid because of his expertise in Islamic jurisprudence and philosophy, and he has authored and co‑authored numerous works on these subjects — including the book Education Jurisprudence (Al‑Fiqh Al‑Tarbawi). Some of his academic articles, published in Iranian journals, cover topics such as Islamic jurisprudence, educational law, and social issues.

5. Between 2008 and 2018, he was President of Al-Mustafa International University, an institution that trains clerics and religious scholars from Iran and abroad.

6. He has served as the Friday Prayer Imam of Qom since 2015.

7. Since 2016, Arafi has headed Iran’s nationwide seminary system, overseeing religious education nationwide.

8. Arafi holds the religious title of Ayatollah, a rank accorded to high-level Shi’a clerics with advanced theological scholarship.

9. He has served as a member of the Guardian Council since 2019, a powerful constitutional body responsible for vetting legislation and supervising elections in Iran.

10. He has also been a member of the Assembly of Experts since 2022, a clerical institution constitutionally mandated to appoint and oversee the Supreme Leader.

2027: INEC Calls For ‘Simple Language’ Version Of Electoral Act

The Independent National Electoral Commission has urged the Nigerian government to clarify the recently amended Electoral Act to ensure it is easily understood by voters.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, explained that what Nigeria needs is a simple legislation on the Electoral Act, written in a simplified language, that will be easy for every Nigerian to understand.

Prof Amupitan made the call at a citizens’ town hall meeting organized by the Civil Society Network on Election Integrity and the Electoral Act, held in Abuja, on Sunday.

The INEC Chairman’s call comes amid the controversy surrounding the real-time transmission of election results, which he said must be clarified, considering that Nigeria is a highly diverse society, especially in its political and electoral landscapes.

He said, “We have gone through the Electoral Act, from the beginning to the end, and we have looked at some of the contentious areas, especially in a country that is highly diverse.

“What Nigeria needs is actually what I call simple legislation, a simple language legislation, whereby it will be possible for every Nigerian to understand and appreciate the provisions of every section.

“Talking about the transmission of the result, when INEC came in, we thought that transmission should be mandated. But let us be sincere about this, the only problem we had is how to define what we call real time.

“For instance, the FCT area council election that just took place, in Kuje, results came out on time in five area councils, but the result from Kabi ward did not come until the following day, Sunday. We could not reach our officers; they were not accessible by phone.

“I don’t see the issue of transmission as a problem; the problem is the adequacy of the network we have.

“You expect that in a place like FCT, you should be able to transmit your results without any encumbrance.

“But we had a situation where it was impossible for us to have a real-time transmission of results because of coverage.”

EPL: Semenyo stars as Man City edge Leeds to cut Arsenal lead

Manchester City moved to within two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.

A first-half strike from Antoine Semenyo proved decisive, as City ended Leeds’ 25-match unbeaten run in evening home fixtures. The visitors were without Erling Haaland, who missed the game with a minor injury.

Leeds miss early chances

Leeds started aggressively and should have led inside three minutes. After Marc Guehi went down under a challenge from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, play continued and the hosts broke quickly.

Brenden Aaronson delivered a cross to an unmarked Calvert-Lewin, who stabbed wide.

Aaronson was denied again on the counter by Gianluigi Donnarumma, while City responded through Nico O’Reilly, whose effort was kept out by goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Cherki creates, Semenyo finishes

City took control with the final action of the first half. Rayan Cherki split the defence with a precise pass to Rayan Ait-Nouri, who squared low for Semenyo to tap in from close range.

After the interval, City threatened to extend their lead. Omar Marmoush twice went close, while Darlow produced a strong save to deny a header from Guehi.

Leeds pushed late on, with Jaka Bijol heading narrowly wide from a deep corner, but Pep Guardiola’s side held firm.

The result tightens the title race and keeps City within striking distance of Arsenal as the season approaches its decisive phase.

LaLiga: Yamal first career hat-trick sends Barcelona four points clear

Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to four points with a commanding 4-1 victory over Villarreal on Saturday, as Lamine Yamal scored the first hat-trick of his senior career.

Barcelona overcame an uneasy start to take control before half-time, with Yamal’s clinical finishing proving decisive. The result increases the pressure on Real Madrid, who play on Monday.

Yamal takes control

Villarreal began brightly and applied early pressure, but Barcelona capitalised on a turnover in midfield in the 28th minute.

Fermin Lopez dispossessed Pape Gueye and fed Yamal, who opened his body to curl a low shot into the bottom corner.

Nine minutes later, Yamal doubled the advantage with a moment of individual quality. Receiving the ball on the right flank, he beat his marker with a stepover before cutting inside and firing into the top corner to make it 2-0 at the break.

Villarreal respond, Barca regain grip

The visitors responded quickly after half-time. A Nicolas Pepe corner was not fully cleared and Gueye swept home from close range to reduce the deficit.

Villarreal nearly equalised soon after when Ayoze Perez broke through but dragged his effort wide.

Barcelona regained control following the introduction of Pedri, whose composure stabilised midfield. In the 69th minute, he found Yamal inside the area and the teenager cut in to slot home his third of the night.

With the outcome effectively decided, Jules Kounde broke forward in stoppage time and squared for Robert Lewandowski to tap into an empty net, sealing a comprehensive win.
