MKO Abiola’s Wife Doyin Laid To Rest In Lagos

The remains of Dr. (Mrs.) Doyinsola Abiola, pioneering journalist and wife of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, was today laid to rest in Lekki, Lagos, after a solemn funeral service at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina.

The burial marked the conclusion of a series of events that began on Tuesday with a night of tributes at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, where family, friends, and colleagues celebrated her life of trailblazing achievements in journalism and service to Nigeria.

The funeral service, officiated by Ven. Henry Adelegan, Canon Residentiary of the Cathedral, featured Bible readings by family and associates. Psalm 91 was read by Midun Tobun, while the Epistle, from 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, was read by Suru Aboaba.

Delivering the sermon, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. Pelu Johnson reflected on Abiola’s life through the theme of restoration and hope.

He recalled her groundbreaking role in the media industry, describing her as a “record-breaker who shattered glass ceilings,” citing her many firsts, including becoming Nigeria’s first female Ph.D. holder in journalism, first female editor of a national daily, and the first woman to head a national newspaper as managing director and editor-in-chief of the National Concord.

“She stood firmly with her husband during the struggle for Nigeria’s democracy, using Concord Newspapers to win the battle of hearts and minds,” Bishop Johnson said, adding that her legacy would endure through the generations she mentored and inspired.

The bishop also used the occasion to call attention to Nigeria’s current challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, and corruption, urging the government to intensify efforts to ease the burden on citizens.

The service was attended by a roll call of dignitaries, including the representative of President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Finance Wale Edun; Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga; former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Nike Akande; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; former Lagos governor Akinwunmi Ambode; and former Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Others present were Eniola Bello, Managing Director of ThisDay; Adesoji Ajayi-Bembe, Obanikoro of Lagos; Sir Steve Omojafor, Chairman of STB-McCann; Yeni Fela Anikulapo-Kuti; Femi Adesina, former presidential aide; Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, wife of former Lagos governor Babatunde Fashola; Dele Babarinsa, co-founder of Tell magazine; Yemi Ogunbiyi, Managing Director of Daily Times; and Gbenga Adefaye, Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.

Following the service, her body was conveyed to her final resting place in Lekki, where she was interred amid prayers and tributes.

Dr. Doyinsola Abiola, who passed away at age 82 on August 5, 2025, is remembered as a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism, a steadfast advocate for democracy, and a matriarch whose quiet strength and devotion left an indelible mark on the nation.

False Rumours About Pregnancy With Mr Macaroni Broke Me – Motunde

Actress Omotunde Sogunle aka Motunde has opened up that false rumour claiming she was pregnant for Mr Macaroni broke her.
Recall that she’s popular for her role in Mr. Macaroni’s comedy skits.
In a recent interview, the actress recounted how she was accused of getting pregnant for her on-screen father, Mr. Macaroni, and allegedly terminating the pregnancy- a claim she described as “shocking and impossible.”
“They said I got pregnant for my on-screen daddy – Mr. Macaroni – and that I aborted the pregnancy. I was shocked. When did that happen? It is not possible. Must there be such a thing between people in a working relationship? I was really devastated then,”she said.
Motunde, however, added that she has since moved on from the incident and now laughs about it with the skitmaker.
“One of the things I have learned from Mr. Macaroni is to keep your silence for your own peace. The more you come out to counter false claims, the longer the matter drags and you will have to keep explaining,” she noted.
The actress, who has steadily built a fan base through her role as Macaroni’s ‘daughter,’ said the episode has made her more resilient and careful about handling controversies in the entertainment industry.

You Can’t Tell Me How To Criticise Tinubu – Sowore Replies DSS

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has refused the Department of State Services’ (DSS) demand to withdraw a social media post criticizing President Bola Tinubu.

Sowore said DSS has no business telling him how to criticise the President.

“You have no business telling me how to criticise the President. But, knowing the nature of your service, it is clear you have not learnt your lessons. Let me state it clearly once again: the determination of the Nigerian people to reclaim their country from thieves in power is unwavering. And it shall be achieved. Freedom cometh by struggle. Aluta continua, victoria ascerta,” Sowore said.

In a letter addressed to the DSS Director General, Sowore dismissed the agency’s request as unlawful and an attempt to act as a proxy for the president.

Sowore said the DSS had a long history of repression against him, recounting several instances of alleged rights violations dating back to his days as a student leader in the 1990s.

He cited arrests in 1993, 1996, and 2019, including his detention on allegations of treason and money laundering, as well as the invasion of a Federal High Court during his trial.

He accused the DSS of acting “bullishly, illegally and unlawfully” under successive governments and said its attempt to demand a retraction on behalf of Tinubu was “fundamentally defective” and unconstitutional.

“The DSS has dragged me through unscrupulous abuse and gross violations of rights for decades without remorse,”
Sowore wrote.

Quoting constitutional provisions and African human rights treaties, he argued that freedom of speech protects citizens’ right to criticize public officials. He said defamation is a personal matter and cannot be pursued by the DSS on behalf of the president.

He added that his criticism of government was consistent with his long-standing activism and political convictions, insisting that Nigerians remain determined to reclaim the country from “thieves in power.”

Details Of Peter Obi’s Meeting With Goodluck Jonathan Emerge

There are signs that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi could soon settle the ongoing discussions regarding a united opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Recall that the two leaders held a meeting behind closed doors on Thursday, according to details shared by Peter Obi on his X account.

In an interview with Daily Trust, sources familiar with the meeting said the engagement was a continuation of earlier conversations between Peter Obi and Jonathan on the permutations for 2027.

One of the sources stated that both men have acknowledged sharing the same political base, and a separate bid by each could hand President Bola Tinubu an easy victory.

The source also confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been wooing Jonathan, but he is wary of the internal crisis in the party.

The source said, “This is the third or fourth time they’ve met since around Easter, but all the previous meetings were kept under wraps. The crux has been who should step down for the other as the coalition’s presidential candidate.

“You know the bulk of the votes Obi secured in 2023 came from the South, particularly the South East and South South, and also the traditional Middlebelt, which had also been Jonathan’s stronghold in 2011. They realised they cannot afford to approach the next election independently.

“Another matter is the platform. Many PDP leaders have been appealing to Jonathan to fly the party’s flag, but he is wary of the internal crisis. He is waiting for assurances.”

Another source also stated that Peter Obi’s camp has raised concerns about being sidelined in the coalition they helped build.

He said, “The ADC has not been able to fully convince the Obidient Movement that the party was not structured to deliver an Atiku presidency.”

2027: Goodluck Jonathan And Peter Obi Hold Closed-Door Meeting In Abuja

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, held a private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Thursday.

Obi, who disclosed the visit in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, described Jonathan as his ”elder brother, a statesman, and leader,” adding that they had a fruitful meeting and discussed the state of the nation.

“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.

Although details of the meeting were not made public, the development comes amid ongoing conversations about Nigeria’s political direction and the state of governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration

Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, has in recent years positioned himself as a mediator in national and continental issues, particularly in conflict resolution and democratic strengthening efforts across Africa.

Obi, on his part, has continued to engage stakeholders following his strong showing in the 2023 elections, where he came third behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The meeting is the latest in Obi’s series of consultations with key political figures as discussions around Nigeria’s future political realignments intensify.

Attempts to obtain clarification from Obi’s former campaign spokesman, Dr Yunusa Tanko, and leaders of the Obidient Movement were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.

Thursday’s meeting is the latest in Obi’s string of high-level engagements, signalling what observers believe could be the early stirrings of a new political coalition.

Speculations became rife of Jonathan’s possible return after the Peoples Democratic Party zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

There have also been reports that the PDP had been wooing Obi to return to the party, as he is seen as major force capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

My Ballon d’Or Nomination Is A Miracle – Super Falcons Star, Nnadozie

The 24-year-old is the first African shot stopper to be nominated for the prestigious award.

She helped Paris FC win the Coupe de France Feminine before leaving the club in May.

The former Rivers Angels goal tender then played a crucial role as Nigeria won a record-extending 10th title at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nnadozie won the best goalkeeper award at the tournament.

“It is a miracle for me. It shows that all the hard work, dedication and everything I’ve been doing in the past, has been worth it,” Nnadozie told BBC Sport.
