BREAKING: Nigerians, Others Stopped From Applying For Green Card, Citizenship In US — Report

The United States government has temporarily halted the processing of legal immigration applications from Nigerians and citizens of other countries recently added to the U.S. “travel ban” proclamation, CBC News reports.

The move mainly affects immigrants who hail from certain African and Asian countries, and it further escalates a wide-ranging crackdown on legal immigration expanded by the Trump administration this month.

Many of those affected by the pause are likely to be legal immigrants who are currently in the US and are seeking to change their status or become citizens.

Earlier in December, the Trump administration directed US Citizenship and Immigration Services to completely freeze all immigration petitions — including requests for American citizenship and permanent residency — made by those already in the US who are nationals of the 19 countries he banned or restricted travel from in June. That order is colloquially known as the “travel ban.”

It was one of several immigration restrictions the administration announced in the wake of the Thanksgiving week shooting of two National Guard soldiers in Washington, D.C., an attack allegedly carried out by an Afghan national.

The administration also suspended all decisions for asylum cases handled by USCIS and the processing of all immigration and visa requests by Afghans.

Also, on Tuesday, Trump expanded that “travel ban” proclamation to include 20 additional nations, fully barring immigrants and travellers from five new countries and partially restricting the entry of people from another 15 nations.

Speaking with CBS News on Friday, a US official who requested anonymity to discuss internal changes that have not been formally announced said UCIS has expanded its suspension of immigration cases to include the new nationalities added to Trump’s proclamation on Tuesday.

The pause will now affect nationals of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria, the new countries facing full travel bans.

It will also impact those hailing from Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The last set of countries face partial restrictions under the latest proclamation.

Previously, the suspension of immigration cases applied to nationals of Afghanistan, Burundi, Chad, Cuba, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Laos, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Yemen and Venezuela.

In his latest proclamation, Trump imposed a full entry ban on citizens of Laos and Sierra Leone, which previously faced partial restrictions.

In a statement posted on social media late Thursday, USCIS Director Joseph Edlow appeared to reference the expansion.

“USCIS is conducting a comprehensive review of anyone from anywhere who poses a threat to the US, including those identified in the President’s latest proclamation to restore law and order in our nation’s immigration system,”Edlow wrote.

Taken together, Trump’s latest “travel ban” decree affects nationals of over 60% of the countries in Africa and roughly 20% of all nations across the globe.

Trump has argued the broad restrictions are designed to safeguard national security and address concerns about the ability to vet people from the affected nations.

However, the decision has stirred conversations among Nigerians with many denouncing the move as unfair, and exaggerated, while largely dismissing the security and religious freedom concerns cited by Washington.

Commentaries stressed diplomatic embarrassment and potential economic harm, while disputing or downplaying the security rationale laid out by US officials who visited Nigerians.

Former senator, Shehu Sani, described the move as “a clear signal that migrants from developing countries are no longer welcome.”

Atiku Slams Nigerian Government Over N17.5trn Pipeline Security Spending

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government following reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited spent N17.5 trillion in one year on pipeline security—an amount he described as unprecedented and deeply alarming.

Atiku made the remarks on Sunday in a statement from his media office, stressing that the revelation stands as one of the most brazen financial scandals in the nation’s history.

The statement compared the alleged spending to Nigeria’s fuel subsidy expenditure over more than a decade, saying: ”For clarity, Nigeria spent roughly N18 trillion on fuel subsidy over a period of 12 years, a national programme that directly cushioned millions of Nigerians, stabilised the transport sector, and helped keep food prices manageable.”

According to the statement, the Tinubu administration had channelled almost the same amount in a single year into opaque security contracts.

“Yet, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the country has now expended nearly the same amount in a single year on the same subsidy and opaque pipeline security contracts awarded to private firms tied to associates and cronies of the President.

“Indeed, the action of the President is akin to robbing Peter (Nigerians) to pay Paul (cronies). This is not governance. This is grand larceny dressed as public expenditure,”the statement added.

The ex-Vice President also questioned the Tinubu administration’s justification for subsidy removal.

”Nigerians were told to tighten their belts, endure hardship, and ‘make sacrifices.’

“However, the same administration has now channelled N17.5 trillion—an amount that could transform Nigeria’s power sector, rebuild our refineries, or fund universal healthcare—into opaque security contracts whose beneficiaries are conveniently linked to those in power,” he stated.

Show Mercy, Grant Nnamdi Kanu Presidential Pardon — Nigerians In Germany Beg Tinubu

Ndi Igbo in Germany and Nigerians in the diaspora have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to show compassion by granting a presidential pardon to the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The appeal was made in a communiqué on Friday jointly signed by Benjamin Chinaka, National Coordinator, and Chinasa Ezeji, Secretary General.

The plea followed an emergency meeting of the association held on November 21, 2025, in Frankfurt, Germany, where members expressed deep concern over the reported life sentence handed down to Kanu by a Nigerian court.

The group warned that the judgment could deepen ethnic tensions and worsen the nation’s fragile political climate.

“Nigeria is currently grappling with serious security and socio-political challenges. At such a delicate time, this judgment may further widen divisions among ethnic groups and undermine democratic cohesion,”
the statement read.

“We respectfully appeal to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to exercise his constitutional prerogative of mercy and grant a presidential pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

NIG noted that many of Kanu’s long-standing grievances reflect the frustrations of ordinary Nigerians, particularly in the South-East, who feel economically disadvantaged, politically marginalized, and insecure within the current national structure.

The group urged President Tinubu to “take a magnanimous decision in the interest of national unity, peace, and stability,” adding that releasing Kanu could be a pivotal step toward rebuilding trust in the Nigerian project.

The appeal comes amid growing domestic and international calls for a reconciliatory approach in addressing separatist agitations and regional discontent in South-East Nigeria.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, had convicted Kanu and sentenced him to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offenses, after which he was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Facility.

Tinubu’s Presidential Pardon to Criminals And Corrupt Individuals Sparks Public Outrage

Nigerians have lashed out at President Bola Tinubu over his decision to pardon criminals through the exercise of his constitutional power of prerogative of mercy.

Recall that Tinubu had last week pardoned 175 Nigerians convicted for various offences, ranging from drug trafficking to murder, armed robbery and illegal mining, among others, and who are serving various terms in prison, including death sentence.
Ordinarily, the President should be receiving accolades for such an action, but the reverse has been the case.
A report by DailyPost revealed that Nigerians have taken to different mediums to lambast the President for pardoning criminals and corrupt individuals.
Tinubu has been under fire, particularly for extending such pardon to drug traffickers and murderers, who are supposed to serve long terms in prison and have only served barely two years.
The argument in some quarters is that the president’s action would only embolden others who want to peddle drugs illegally into believing that even when they are caught, they will only get a light punishment and eventually pardoned.

There are those who have argued that the president’s action runs contrary to the avowed government’s position against drug trafficking.

Those on this side of the argument believe that the much touted slogan of waging war against drug trafficking is just a veil cast on Nigerians.
Yet, there are others who are worried by how the outside world would perceive Nigeria. They are worried that the international community would see Nigeria as a trading hub and safe haven for drug traffickers.
The likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, civil society organisation and political parties have all spoken out, condemning the President’s action and warning of its dire consequences for the country.
The ADC, in a statement by its interim national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, yesterday said the President’s action undermines the country’s anti-drug efforts and encourages crime, as well as further tarnishes Nigeria’s image in the international community.
It stated that what President Tinubu did amounts to abuse of his prerogative of mercy to grant clemency to persons serving prison terms for drug related offences, especially when most of them have barely served two years.
Describing the pardon as pathetic and an act of immense national disgrace, he noted that officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies have taken grave risks to prosecute and secure convictions for drug offenders.
It argued that granting clemency to such convicts was nothing but a mockery of the efforts of gallant officers in the fight against narcotics and illicit drugs.
“According to official media statements, it appears that all it takes to get presidential clemency for even the worst of crimes in Nigeria, including drug trafficking, gun running and murderers is to show remorse and learn skills.

“Pardons and clemency are granted for their social utility and to correct perceived miscarriages of justice, and to convicts who have paid their debts to society. But we wonder what Nigeria stands to benefit from this act of clemency to convicts serving life sentences who have barely served two years.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria is still regarded as a major transit point for illicit drugs while we face a serious national pandemic of drug use, especially among our youths. Several reports have it that Nigeria’s drug use stands at an estimated 14.4 percent, almost three times the global average of 5.5 percent.

“For years, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies have risked their lives and limbs to combat this problem, dismantle illicit drug networks, intercept consignments, prosecute offenders and secure convictions.

“The men and women in these agencies have laboured under enormous risk and pressure to protect the public from the scourge of addiction, trafficking and related crimes that carry some of the harshest penalties in Nigerian law, precisely because of their devastating impact on public health, youth development and national security.

“Granting clemency to individuals convicted under such laws, therefore, strikes at the very foundation of Nigeria’s legal and moral stance against narcotics and makes a mockery of the gallant efforts of officers fighting the battle against narcotics and illicit drugs,” the party said.

On the implication of the president’s action in the international arena, the party also said: “These pardons also send reverberations beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“They undercut our standing among global partners in the fight against drug trafficking and give the unfortunate impression to the rest of the world that our country, under President Tinubu, has particular sympathy for drug dealers and that Nigeria is a risk-free jurisdiction for traffickers in narcotics.

“Make no mistakes, with this mass clemency for drug dealers, President Tinubu and the APC are redefining the standard of morality in our country. They are gradually transforming Nigeria into a country where anything goes; a country where even the worst of crimes attract no punishment beyond a few months of inconvenience for the criminal to show remorse.”
Similarly, in a post on his social media platforms, Atiku said the President’s action was not only reckless but it also emboldens criminality, stressing that as expected it provoked outrage across the nation.
He explained that ordinarily, the power of presidential pardon is a solemn prerogative, a moral and constitutional instrument designed to temper justice with mercy and to underscore the humanity of the state. When properly exercised, he said it elevates justice and strengthens public faith in governance.
“Regrettably, the latest pardon issued by the Tinubu administration has done the very opposite. The decision to extend clemency to individuals convicted of grave crimes, such as drug trafficking, kidnapping, murder and corruption, not only diminishes the sanctity of justice but also sends a dangerous signal to the public and the international community about the values this government upholds,” he lamented.

He noted that at a time when Nigeria continues to writhe under the weight of insecurity, moral decay and a surge in drug-related offences, “it is both shocking and indefensible that the presidency would prioritise clemency for those whose actions have directly undermined national stability and social order.
“Particularly worrisome is the revelation that 29.2 percent percent of those pardoned were convicted for drug-related crimes at a time when our youth are being destroyed by narcotics, and our nation is still struggling to cleanse its image from the global stain of drug offences.

“Even more disturbing is the moral irony that this act of clemency is coming from a President whose own past remains clouded by unresolved and unexplained issues relating to the forfeiture of thousands of dollars to the United States government over drug-related investigations.”
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 added that it was no surprise that this administration continued to demonstrate a worrying tolerance for individuals associated with criminal enterprise.
He argued that, “A presidential pardon is meant to symbolise restitution and moral reform. Instead, what we have witnessed is a mockery of the criminal justice system, an affront to victims, a demoralisation of law enforcement and a grave injury to the conscience of the nation.

“Clemency must never be confused with complicity. When a government begins to absolve offenders from the very crimes it claims to be fighting, it erodes the moral authority of leadership and emboldens lawlessness.

“Nigeria deserves a leadership that upholds justice, not one that trivialises it.”

However, for el-Rufai, the President’s action was not that of compassion as many would think but that of a reunion of people of like minds.
Writing on his Twitter handle, he said: “For a president once accused of forfeiting $460,000to the US authority in a drug linked investigation, pardoning drug dealers feels less like compassion and more like a class reunion of cartel alumni association.’
Even the presidential aides were not left out in the condemnation.
The Special Adviser on Policy Communication in the South East to the President, Josef Onoh has also called on President Tinubu to revoke the pardon, particularly that of Maryam Sanda who committed murder for killing her husband and other convicted drug traffickers
In a statement, he said: “It is morally wrong to extend mercy to such offenders. It is a rape of justice that is capable of damaging Nigeria’s international reputation.”

He argued that the decision contradicted the principle of rule of law as enshrined in the 1999 constitution and international norms like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“This act, while constitutionally permissible, contravenes the moral imperatives of retributive justice and restorative equity.

“It inflicts psychological trauma on victims’ families, perpetuates systemic injustice and erodes the deterrence mechanisms essential for societal stability,” he stated.
He argued that pardoning Sanda undermines the intrinsic value of human life and the principle of accountability, while granting clemency to drug traffickers signals a moral abdication that normalises predation on society’s most fragile members.

“Nationally, this portrays Nigeria as a haven for impunity and deters foreign investment in a country already battling reputational deficits from corruption.

“Internationally, it undermines Nigeria’s credibility with institutions like the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, which has commended the country’s anti-narcotics efforts,” he stated.

Nigerians Top List Of Asylum Seekers In Ireland

Data from Ireland’s Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration shows that Nigeria now ranks as the leading country of origin for asylum seekers in Ireland.

Asylum refers to the protection granted by a country to individuals fleeing persecution in their home nations.

An asylum seeker is someone who has applied for this protection and awaits a decision on their refugee status.

The latest report, published in August, shows Ireland is experiencing a decline in new asylum applications. Authorities recorded 1,164 applications in July 2025, down from 1,735 in July 2024, marking a significant slowdown in fresh claims.

Between January and July 2025, asylum applications totalled 7,207, a 42 percent drop compared to 12,236 recorded in the same period last year.

Nigeria tops the list of countries of origin with 1,083 applications, followed by Pakistan (945), Somalia (933), Afghanistan (767) and Georgia (462).

“The number of applications pending in the IPO has been reducing since the end of September 2024, when it stood at 23,863. As of July this year, there were 18,323 applications pending,” the department reported.

It added that compared to last year, there has been “an increase in the number of applications where the IPO made a recommendation or otherwise closed off a case.”

In July 2025, 1,755 cases were closed, compared to 1,294 in July 2024.

The department clarified that the figures, extracted on August 8, are operational and may be updated as cases continue to be processed.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is facing record-high asylum numbers, with nearly 89,000 applications lodged in the year to June 2025, and a backlog of over 224,000 cases awaiting decisions or appeals.

After finally entering the market in years, Doyin of BBNaija claims that people are suffering in Nigeria.

Doyin, a former housemate on Big Brother Naija, talked about her first-ever market visit in years.

She revealed that she had been disconnected from reality and that she finally realized this after visiting Lagos’ well-known Ogba market.

Seeing how much hardship there is in Nigeria, she thanked God for her privileges.

According to her

I realized today for the first time how detached from reality I am…..people are suffering!!!!

If you can afford food, accommodation and your basic needs you don’t even know what God has done for you.

Today has to be the day I’ve felt the most grateful to God for the life I have.

Yes I visited ogba market and a place called Sunday market. All I could say last night was just thank you Jesus. Sometimes it’s good to visit places outside your comfort zone.

I’ve never gone to the food market to buy even something as small as pepper in my entire adult life. I must have followed my mum once or twice as a child but I don’t even remember the experience

Yesterday was really eye opening for me.

It’s funny how I don’t even know how much they sell pepper or tomatoes or chicken or Turkey or anything at all. There is a whole world outside what I know or what I’m used to.

I realized I’ve been a brat for the most part of my life. I get frustrated when I don’t get my way over frivolous things when there are people that can’t even feed.

If you really want to know how privileged you are, visit the less privileged and you learn to be more grateful.”

Nigerians Suffering But Leaders Sending Money To Themselves For Holidays – Mr Macaroni

Debo Adebayo, the famous Nigerian social activist and skit maker, who is better known as Mr Macaroni, has slammed the leadership of the National Assembly.

He slammed them over their luxurious lifestyles amid unbearable hardship by Nigerians.

Macaroni lamented that while Nigerians are going through unbearable hardship, their leaders were sending money to themselves to enjoy holidays.

His reaction followed a video circulating online in which the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during a plenary session announced to his colleagues that “a token has been sent to their various accounts to enable them enjoy their holiday”.

The development has attracted many negative comments from Nigerians.

In a post on his social media platform on Wednesday, the social activist questioned why poor Nigerians have to pay for the luxurious lifestyle of their leaders.

“The Senate President has sent very expensive prayers out of the insufficient blessings of over 200 million people to himself and his already blessed colleagues at the National Assembly.

“These are the leaders that have asked struggling Nigerians to make sacrifices if they want things to work in the country. So while Nigerians are going through unbearable hardship, our leaders are sending money to themselves to enjoy holidays.

“Who are those that should be making sacrifices if not for our leaders?

“Do our leaders understand that leadership is about service, selfishness and sacrifice??

“Why do the poor people of Nigeria have to pay for the luxurious lifestyle of the leaders?? Why??? This isn’t leadership!!!”

See How Nigerians Reacted After Appeal Court Reinstated Adeleke As Osun Governor

Nigerians have reacted after the Appeal Court on Friday upheld the election of Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.

The Appeal Court set aside the decision of the Osun State Governorship tribunal which sacked Adeleke as the governor of the state and affirmed the victory of Adeleke.

Recall that the former governor of the state and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gboyega Oyetola, had challenged Adeleke’s victory in the July 16 governorship election, before the election petition tribunal in Osun state.

The tribunal led by Justice Tertse Kume, in a split judgement of 2 to 1, sacked Adeleke based on irregularities in 744 polling units across ten local government areas of the state.

It canceled the alleged illegal votes and declared Oyetola the winner on legally valid votes.

The tribunal had also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Adeleke and issue it to Oyetola.

In a ruling on Friday, the court ruled that the APC and Oyetola failed to prove its over-voting case against Adeleke.

Following the development, netizens took to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter to express their reactions to the ruling of the appellate court.

See some of the reactions below.

@ManLikeIcey wrote: “CONFIRMED: Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke remains Governor of the State. The appeal court ruled in his favor. Congratulations to the great people of Osun State.”

@Shakur_Dml wrote: “I think Oyetola should rest at this point. He lost and it’s clear the people don’t want him.”

@great_igie wrote: “The people’s governor has been reinstated. Congratulations to Osun State.”

@66612Umoh wrote: “Great! This is good for our democracy, congratulations Mr governor!”

@DaddyboyI wrote: “Very Good judgment for our democracy.”

@toninny wrote: “Oyetola go Supreme Court, let them disqualify you once more so you can allow Adeleke to face his job.”

@iamLABOD wrote: “That is the will of God and that is the will of the Osun masses too. If not for rigging, this man should be doing his second-year tenure now. Osun people want him, and he is performing for them already. So, therefore, let no man worry Imole again.”

@Alexander11426 wrote: “Congratulations Gov. Adeleke. We hope and pray for victory for Peter Obi also. Amen.“
