The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent decision to grant presidential pardons to several convicted murderers, drug traffickers, and smugglers.
Recall that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration released a list of all 175 beneficiaries of the President’s pardon and clemency. The list was released in a press statement on Saturday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In a statement on Sunday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the action as “pathetic and a national disgrace.”
It warned that the move undermines Nigeria’s anti-drug efforts, encourages crime, and further tarnishes Nigeria’s image in the eyes of the world.
The statement read: “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) finds as pathetic and an act of immense national disgrace the recent presidential pardon and clemency granted to several convicted criminals by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“It amounts to a most irresponsible abuse of the presidential power of prerogative of mercy to grant express pardon to dozens of convicts held for drug trafficking, smuggling, and related offences, especially when most of these convicts have barely served two years in jail for offences that carry a penalty of life imprisonment.
“According to official media statements, it appears that all it takes to get presidential clemency for even the worst of crimes in Nigeria, including drug trafficking, gun running, and murder, is to “show remorse and learn skills.”
“Pardons and clemency are granted for their social utility and to correct perceived miscarriages of justice, and to convicts who have paid their debts to society. But we wonder what Nigeria stands to benefit from this act of clemency to convicts serving life sentences who have barely served two years.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria is still regarded as a major transit point for illicit drugs while we face a serious national pandemic of drug use, especially among our youths. Several reports have it that Nigeria’s drug use stands at an estimated 14.4%, almost three times the global average of 5.5%.
“For years, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies have risked life and limb to combat this problem, dismantle illicit drug networks, intercept consignments, prosecute offenders, and secure convictions. The men and women in these agencies have laboured under enormous risk and pressure to protect the public from the scourge of addiction, trafficking, and related crimes that carry some of the harshest penalties in Nigerian law, precisely because of their devastating impact on public health, youth development, and national security. Granting clemency to individuals convicted under such laws therefore strikes at the very foundation of Nigeria’s legal and moral stance against narcotics and makes a mockery of the gallant efforts of officers fighting the battle against narcotics and illicit drugs.
“These pardons also send reverberations beyond Nigeria’s borders. They undercut our standing among global partners in the fight against drug trafficking and give the unfortunate impression to the rest of the world that our country, under President Tinubu, has particular sympathy for drug dealers and that Nigeria is a risk-free jurisdiction for traffickers in narcotics.”
The party pointed out that with the mass clemency for drug dealers, Tinubu and the APC are redefining the standard of morality in Nigeria.
According to the ADC, they are gradually transforming Nigeria into a country where anything goes, where even the worst of crimes attract no punishment beyond a few months of inconvenience for the criminal to, by their assessment, “show remorse.”
The ADC stated that its mission is to rescue Nigeria from the APC, to whom public opinion or accountability means nothing, and power and impunity mean everything.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has mocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing its remaining members as “undertakers preparing to bury a dying party.”
Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos, Mr Seye Oladejo, made the remark in a statement issued on Saturday in reaction to a fresh wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling party.
Oladejo urged the PDP to stop dismissing what he described as “a mass exodus” from its ranks, warning that the opposition party was only deceiving itself by downplaying the scale of its internal collapse.
“The PDP’s claim that defections cannot weaken it is laughable and exposes the party’s chronic state of denial, delusion, and self-deception,” Oladejo said.
“What we are witnessing is not ordinary political migration but the inevitable outcome of years of deceit, lack of ideology, and betrayal among its own leaders. When a house is built on quicksand, it only takes a tremor to bring it down.”
The APC spokesman described the ongoing defections as proof that even loyal PDP members had lost faith in a party that had “refused to reform or present a credible alternative to Nigerians”.
“Those still clinging to the PDP are merely undertakers, staying behind to perform the final rites and dispose of what remains of a once-dominant but now lifeless political entity,”he added.
Oladejo said the APC was not surprised by the defections, noting that the opposition party had relied for years on propaganda and empty promises.
He accused the PDP of mismanaging the country during its 16-year rule, saying it could not suddenly reinvent itself as a credible opposition “when it remains mired in confusion and leadership crises.”
“The recent defection of key PDP figures to the APC reflects growing confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Oladejo stated.
“It’s time for the PDP to learn to walk alone on its long, dark road to 2027. The party’s glory days are gone, and the sooner it accepts that reality, the less humiliating its final exit will be.”
He advised the opposition to conduct an honest post-mortem of its failures and accept that its influence in Nigeria’s political landscape had drastically faded.
“The defections are not just political victories for the APC; they are clear endorsements of our commitment to progress, stability, and people-centred leadership.
Nigerians are speaking loudly, the era of deceitful opposition politics is over,” Oladejo added.
Solomon Dalung, a former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, has cautioned that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could be forced to return to Lagos after only one term in office.
Dalung, who is a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), gave the warning in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune on Saturday.
According to him, the failure of both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to meet the expectations of Nigerians has opened the door for new political forces like the ADC.
“Tinubu may come to the conclusion that he should be preparing to return to Lagos by May 29, 2027,” Dalung said.
He noted that many Nigerians are tired of the worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and poor governance, stressing that citizens will soon demand a new political direction.
Dalung dismissed President Tinubu’s earlier description of the ADC as a camp for internally displaced politicians, saying the party is fast emerging as one of the strongest platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The ADC is not just another minor opposition party. We are building a movement that will shock even the most doubtful Nigerians,” he said.
Although he did not unveil specific strategies, the former minister explained that the ADC is in talks with stakeholders across the country and will present credible candidates who can challenge the current system.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Professor Anthony Agbazuere, has expressed confidence that the South-East will support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
He argued that the president’s policies have brought stability to the economy and renewed hope among Nigerians. According to him, the removal of fuel subsidy has opened up significant resources for development, enabling state governors and local government chairmen to deliver more effectively.
Agbazuere also highlighted the establishment of the South-East Development Commission as a landmark initiative, saying it demonstrates Tinubu’s commitment to rebuilding the region and has further endeared him to the people of the zone.
He said …
“As members of the APC, we are very happy that we have a president who is working very hard, who is exceptional as a leader. President Bola Tinubu is a special species of man. Only those who have little IQ will dispute that.
“President Tinubu came in as president of Nigeria when the former government was printing money to survive. What they call wages and means. They were printing money to survive. And that meant keeping our children and grandchildren in a state of indebtedness for life. Pushing our troubles and our problems forward for our children and grandchildren. President Bola Tinubu came in and said no.
“Living a false life. For how long shall that be? That a lot of people were making so much money from the fuel subsidy. Because at that time, people would buy fuel from Nigeria and go and sell the same fuel to countries outside Nigeria at the boundaries of Nigeria and make billions of Naira.
“Nigeria was subsidising not just for Nigerians alone, but for other countries around Nigeria. And that meant it was wrong. And President Tinubu said no.
“He now had to remove the fuel subsidy and all the quantum of funds coming from there. He started pushing those funds, those monies, back to the people through the state governments and local governments. And that’s why he’s saying that we should go to state governments to account for these monies.”
Agbazuere further commended President Tinubu for championing local government autonomy but criticized state governors for allegedly obstructing the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment upholding the policy.
“And this is the only government too that came on board and saw the need for local governments to be autonomous. The federal government of Nigeria, under President Tinubu, had to file a suit at the Supreme Court.
“And the Supreme Court delivered a judgment that funds meant for local governments should be given to them directly. Even up to now, the states are still disobeying.”
On education, Agbazuere praised President Tinubu for initiating the student loan scheme, which he said would enable children from poor backgrounds to complete their university studies.
“This is the same government and the only government that has come up to say, look, children of poor parents, you must not be chased away from universities.
“I am introducing student loans for you to pay your school fees. And you can only pay back when you start working at your convenience, and of course, gradually. But to make sure you complete your school education, your university education, we must support you as a government,” he added.
The APC chieftain added that President Tinubu has reformed the tax system in a way that exempts low-income earners from paying taxes in Nigeria.
“Today, if you’re not working in Nigeria, you won’t pay tax. Who has ever done this before? If not Tinubu, so why must we not support such a person that says that the rich who get so much money should be paying their tax.
“Those who have not gotten enough as salary should not pay tax. Where does this ever happen? Is it not Nigeria? Is it not Tinubu? That’s what we are saying. Such a person should be allowed to exhaust his program of action.
“President Tinubu is focused. He is visionary. And that’s what people like us at my level as a professor of laws, I say, look, allow this man. Those who think they have other ideas should wait after his tenure of eight years. They can come and let us all see what they have,” he said.
