La Liga: Barcelona begin title defence with 3-0 win over nine-man Mallorca

Barcelona begin their La Liga title defence with a 3-0 win over nine-man Mallorca in a chaotic contest at Estadi de Son Moix.

Raphinha opened the scoring after just seven minutes, heading in a cross from Lamine Yamal.

Ferran Torres doubled the lead midway through the first half, capitalising on confusion as Mallorca’s players stopped play with Antonio Raillo injured in the box.

Manu Morlanes was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession, and Mallorca were reduced to nine men before half-time when Vedat Muriqi was dismissed following a VAR review for a high boot on Eric Garcia.

Barcelona pressed for a third after the interval, with Dani Olmo and Raphinha both going close, before Yamal sealed the win deep into stoppage time with a curling effort.

Debutant Marcus Rashford had minimal impact after he was introduced in the second half, confirming his La Liga registration earlier reported by gistreel.com.

EPL: Man City new signings steal show in 4-0 win over Wolves

Manchester City opened their Premier League campaign with a dominant 4-0 win over Wolves, as debutants Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki made an immediate impact in Pep Guardiola’s new-look side.

Reijnders, signed in the summer to help fill the void left by Kevin De Bruyne’s move to Napoli, scored once and was instrumental in two other goals during an impressive first outing.

Cherki, introduced in the second half, sealed the win with a fine finish just eight minutes after coming on.

The result provided Guardiola’s men with a bright start after last season’s struggles.

There was a moment of concern in stoppage time when Nico Gonzalez landed awkwardly, though he was able to continue after receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, Wolves supporters paid tribute throughout the game to former striker Diogo Jota, applauding and chanting his name.

Man arrested over racist abuse towards Bournemouth’s Semenyo at Anfield

Merseyside Police have arrested a 47-year-old man from Liverpool after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused during Friday’s Premier League opener at Anfield.

The incident, which led to a brief stoppage in play, was immediately reported to the referee by Semenyo.

The suspect was identified, ejected from the stadium, and later taken into custody on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Semenyo later thanked teammates, Liverpool players, supporters, and officials for their response to the incident.

Under UK law, racially or religiously aggravated offences carry tougher penalties.

Convictions can attract up to two years imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both.

Tottenham 3-0 Burnley: Kudus shines with double assist on Spurs debut

Mohammed Kudus marked his Premier League debut for Tottenham with two assists as Thomas Frank’s side eased past Burnley 3-0 in their season opener.

The Ghana midfielder, signed this summer from West Ham, created the breakthrough inside 10 minutes when his run and cross set up Richarlison to finish sharply on the turn.

Kudus was involved again 15 minutes inside the second half, delivering another ball from the byline that Richarlison converted with a stunning scissor kick.

Richarlison, who scored only four league goals last season, left the pitch to a standing ovation when substituted in the 71st minute.

La Liga: Rashford registration confirmed as Barcelona name star for opener

Barcelona have named Marcus Rashford in their matchday squad for Saturday’s La Liga opener against Mallorca, after registration confirmed.

Although the Manchester United loanee is still awaiting final registration clearance, Rashford’s paperwork are expected to be done before the kick-off of their game.

The Catalan club managed to register goalkeeper Joan Garcia on Friday, with head coach Hansi Flick remaining optimistic the England international will be cleared in time, with the forward badly needed in Robert Lewandowski’s absence.

Barcelona are relying on additional funds raised from the sale of a 50% sell-on clause for former player Francisco Trincao to finalise the process.

Alongside Rashford and Garcia, Flick has also included four La Masia graduates in the travelling squad – Jofre Torrents, Guillermo Fernandez, Dro and Toni Fernandez.

Man United drop Baleba pursuit, shift focus to Gyokeres vs Sesko clash

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with club chiefs unwilling to meet the Seagulls’ hefty asking price.

This is after United had already spent over £200m on attacking reinforcements this summer.

Baleba, who is keen on a move to Old Trafford, will now have to wait at least another year as United turn their attention to bedding in new signing Benjamin Sesko.

The 21-year-old Slovenian striker, signed from RB Leipzig, is tipped by manager Ruben Amorim to become United’s long-term No.9.

With Rasmus Hojlund set for a loan switch to AC Milan and Mason Mount recently deployed as a false striker, Sesko could be thrust into action immediately despite limited preparation time.

Sunday’s clash against Arsenal will see Sesko face Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish forward long linked with United before opting for the Gunners.

Gyokeres has already made his mark with a goal in pre-season and offers Arsenal a powerful target man option, while Sesko combines strength with greater mobility.

Gyokeres, 27, has scored over 100 goals in the past two seasons, whereas Sesko’s 39 strikes in the same period make him Europe’s most prolific player under 23.

The game at Old Trafford will now pit the two strikers head-to-head, to kick-off their clubs campaign.
