EPL: Liverpool hammer West Ham 5-2 to climb table

Liverpool moved into fifth place in the Premier League after a 5-2 victory over West Ham United Anfield, drawing level on points with fourth-placed Manchester United.

Three first-half set-piece goals put the hosts in control before West Ham mounted a brief response after the interval.

Set-piece precision

Liverpool struck early when Hugo Ekitike finished smartly from close range after a pass from Ryan Gravenberch in the fifth minute.

The advantage doubled against the run of play as Virgil van Dijk headed home a corner delivered by Dominik Szoboszlai.

Just before the break, Alexis Mac Allister’s volley took a deflection and found the net to make it 3-0. All three goals came from set-plays.

West Ham had opportunities through Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek but failed to convert.

Visitors rally briefly

Soucek reduced the deficit early in the second half, finishing from a cross by El Hadji Malick Diouf.

However, Cody Gakpo restored Liverpool’s three-goal cushion in the 70th minute with a deflected strike.

Taty Castellanos gave West Ham renewed hope with a second goal, but a cross from Jeremie Frimpong was turned into his own net by Axel Disasi to complete the scoring.

Liverpool’s first five-goal league haul of the campaign lifts them above Chelsea, who face leaders Arsenal on Sunday.

West Ham remain 18th, two points behind Nottingham Forest, as the relegation battle intensifies.

Nigerian Football Star, Asisat Oshoala Reveals Most Memorable Phase With Super Falcons

Al Hilal Women forward Asisat Oshoala has described the 2023 Women’s World Cup as the most memorable tournament of her career with the Super Falcons.

In an interview with Ghanasoccernet, Oshoala said she approaches every tournament with the same hunger and commitment, whether on the African stage or at the global showpiece.

“Every tournament is special to me because I give my all in every competition. Whether it is WAFCON or the World Cup, I approach each game with the same passion and energy because I genuinely love football,” Asisat Oshoala said.

Still, one tournament sits above the rest.

“The 2023 World Cup in Australia stands out the most for me. Our match against Australia was particularly special, as well as the game against England,” Oshoala said.

The Super Falcons went into the 2023 tournament ranked 40th in the world by FIFA. They held Olympic champions Canada, stunned co-hosts Australia and pushed eventual finalists England to extra time and penalties before bowing out in the round of 16.

Oshoala believes those outings highlighted the team’s steady rise on the global stage.

“Those performances showed how much the Nigerian team is evolving and improving with every competition. At WAFCON in Morocco, we experienced intense moments, especially when we were two goals down. Fighting back together and supporting one another made the victory even sweeter,” she concluded.

The striker, however, was not included in the latest Super Falcons squad announced by head coach Justine Madugu for the upcoming pre-WAFCON friendly matches against Cameroon in Yaounde.

The first friendly takes place on Saturday at the Military Stadium in Yaounde, with the return fixture scheduled for Tuesday, March 3.

Super Eagles Head Coach, Eric Chelle Names Two Things He Wants To Achieve With Nigeria

Eric Chelle, head coach of the Super Eagles, has expressed his ambition to lead Nigeria to victory in both the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup.

Chelle, who has less than a year in his contract with the Super Eagles, spoke in a recent interview on the Histoires de Foot Podcast.

“I have a structure around me to try to progress as a coach. It is true that not long ago, I said that my dream was to be the first African at Real Madrid,” Chelle said.

“But that is not my only dream. I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.

“If we had gone through, I wanted to qualify for the World Cup with Nigeria, and I even wanted to win that World Cup.

“I have lots of dreams. I am 48 years old but still young and someone who wants to realise his dreams.”

Chelle led Nigeria to win the bronze medal during the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

Champions League Round of 16 Teams Confirmed: Not Just the Usual Giants, Galatasaray, Real Madrid, PSG and More Join the Fray

The 2025/26 Champions League round of 16 is set with 16 teams, including surprises like Bodø/Glimt and Galatasaray. See who qualified via playoffs, the big names, and the most exciting matchups to watch after the February 27 draw.

Champions League 1/8 Finals Participants 2025/26: Full List and Key Storylines Ahead of Draw

The Champions League knockout stage is taking shape, and honestly, it’s more open than many expected. All 16 spots for the round of 16 are now filled after the playoff ties wrapped up. Eight teams sailed through the league phase straight to this stage, while the other eight had to battle through those tense two-legged playoffs. For supporters tracking every twist via free livescore football, this is where the real drama begins.

Look, this isn’t the usual lineup of only superclubs dominating everything. Sure, the heavy hitters are there, but some underdogs punched way above their weight to join them.

Teams That Skipped the Playoffs (Direct to Round of 16)

These sides finished in the top eight of the league phase and got a bye. No extra games, just straight into March’s action:

  • Arsenal
  • Bayern Munich
  • Liverpool
  • Tottenham
  • Barcelona
  • Chelsea
  • Sporting CP
  • Manchester City

That’s a lot of Premier League and big European names. They earned the rest and the seeding advantage in the draw.

Playoff Winners Who Made It Through

The real drama came in the playoffs. These teams fought their way in, often against tough opponents:

  • Galatasaray (edged out Juventus in a wild aggregate with extra time)
  • Real Madrid
  • PSG
  • Atalanta (beat Borussia Dortmund)
  • Bayer Leverkusen (solid win over Olympiacos)
  • Bodø/Glimt (huge shock, knocked out Inter Milan)
  • Newcastle United (overpowered Qarabag)
  • Atlético Madrid (ran riot against Club Brugge, including a Sorloth hat-trick in one leg)

Bodø/Glimt’s run stands out the most. A small Norwegian club, with their domestic season barely started, took down Inter, last season’s finalists, 5-2 on aggregate. They even won at San Siro. That’s the kind of story that makes the Champions League special. Not every year do you see a team from Norway’s far north this deep.Galatasaray also turned heads by getting past Juventus, showing Turkish football can still mix it with the elite.

Why This Round of 16 Feels Different

Not all qualifiers are the perennial top clubs. Real Madrid and PSG had to go through playoffs, something you don’t see often from those two. Madrid, with their history, still needed to grind out results against Benfica. PSG handled Monaco. It shows even giants can slip in the new league-phase format. But the underdogs add spice. Newcastle back in the mix with their Saudi-backed push.Atalanta is always dangerous in knockouts. Leverkusen is carrying last season’s momentum. And Bodø/Glimt, pure fairytale stuff. The seeded teams (top eight) avoid each other in the round of 16, so no Arsenal vs Bayern early. But the unseeded playoff winners can land anyone. That opens doors for big clashes.

Most Intriguing Things to Watch After the Draw

The draw happens on February 27, and it’ll set up some mouth watering ties. Here are the ones I’m most curious about:

  • Bodø/Glimt’s next adventure. They could face Manchester City again (they already beat them once in the league phase) or Sporting. Imagine the Arctic Circle hosting Pep’s side in March snow.
  • Galatasaray vs one of the English giants. Possible Liverpool or Tottenham matchup. The Türk Telekom Stadium atmosphere would be insane for an away Premier League team.
  • Real Madrid against a top seed. They drew Sporting or City in potential paths. Madrid in knockout mode is always scary, but facing City again would be fireworks.
  • PSG vs Barcelona or Chelsea. Mbappé gone, but PSG still loaded. A reunion with Barca or a London battle could get messy.
  • Atléticovs Liverpool or Tottenham. Simeone loves these gritty ties against English sides. Highintensity, cardseverywhere.
  • Atalanta or Leverkusen vs Arsenal/Bayern. Both Italian/German sides play open, attacking football. Could produce thrillers.

First legs March 10-11, seconds March 17-18. No room for error now.

This season’s format has shaken things up. More teams get a shot, and we’ve seen shocks. The usual suspects are still favourites, but don’t count out the newcomers. Bodø/Glimt has already proven that anything can happen.Whoever you support, the next few months look packed with proper European nights. The full set of UEFA Champions League fixtures drops tomorrow, and expect some chaos. Get ready for some proper drama.

Super Eagles: Why I Asked NFF For $130,000 Monthly Salary, Made 19 Demands – Eric Chelle Opens Up

The head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has confirmed that he presented specific conditions to the Nigeria Football Federation regarding a new contract.

Chelle has been locked in negotiations with the National Sports Commission, NSC, since he led the team to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in January.

However, some of the details were leaked to the media.

Reports claimed Chelle asked for €130,000 monthly alongside improved working conditions.

Chelle has now confirmed the circulated docuement is authentic and questioned how it became public.

“Today, if I’m being honest, I don’t really know. The first question I ask myself is how this document could have ended up in the media.

“That’s the question I’m asking myself,” he said in an interview with histoiresdefootpodcast.

Chelle also explained that the salary figure was in dollars, not euros.

And according to the Malian, the amount would cover the wages of his technical crew.

Transfer: Why Ademola Lookman Didn’t Join Osimhen At Galatasaray – Agent Reveals

Italian football agent, George Gardi, has revealed the reason Ademola Lookman did not team up with Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray.

Recall that Galatasaray were keen to sign Lookman from Atalanta in the last two transfer windows.

Osimhen even revealed that he was talking to his fellow Nigerian international teammate to join him at Galatasaray.

However, Lookman ended up joining Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the development, Gardi, who played a role in many important transfers for Galatasaray, said that Lookman could have joined Osimhen at Galatasaray after his deal to join Inter Milan collapsed, but Atalanta refused to let him go.

“Especially with top-level players, sometimes transfers don’t fall through. There are endless variables,” Gardi told Tuttosport.

“Last summer, after his [Ademola Lookman’s] deal with Inter fell through, I tried for Lookman; I wanted to emulate the Osimhen operation.

“A loan with a purchase option. But his club didn’t want to let him go. I tried again in January, but this time the demands from the Bergamo club were too high.”

LaLiga: Ighalo Predicts What Will Happen To Lookman Playing Under Simeone At Atletico Madrid

Former Odion Ighalo, who previously played for Manchester United, has voiced his belief that Ademola Lookman will flourish under the guidance of Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid.

Describing Simeone as an astute and tactical manager, Ighalo believes that Lookman’s transition to one of Spain’s premier clubs will significantly enhance his development as a player.

Since his recent move from Atalanta on a four-and-a-half-year contract, Lookman has made a strong impression, registering four goals and two assists in just six appearances for Atlético.

“Playing under Diego Simeone’s guidance will benefit Lookman because Simeone is a tactical and intelligent coach.

“I see this [Lookman’s move from Atalanta to Atletico] as a good step forward in his career,”Ighalo stated in an interview with Winwin.

Lookman is expected to play a key role when Atletico Madrid host Club Brugge in the return leg of their Champions League Round of 16 playoffs in mid-week.

Eze, Gyokeres fire Arsenal past Tottenham in five-goal thriller

Arsenal reasserted control of the Premier Leaguetitle race with a commanding 4-1 win over Tottenham in the north London derby, restoring their five-point lead at the top of the table.

The result came amid mounting criticism following a midweek collapse against Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Manchester City had trimmed the gap with a win over Newcastle United.

Against that backdrop, Arsenal delivered a statement performance driven by Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres.

Eze sets the tone

Eze opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, finishing from close range after sustained pressure inside the Tottenham area.

It was a decisive intervention in a fixture that carried added narrative, given his near move to Spurs before completing a £60 million switch from Crystal Palace to Arsenal in August.

Tottenham responded quickly through Randal Kolo Muani, who levelled two minutes later with an individual effort.

However, Arsenal regained control just after the interval when Gyokeres struck from 20 yards, restoring the visitors’ advantage with a precise right-footed finish.

Eze extended the lead in the 61st minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball in the box and sweeping past Guglielmo Vicario to make it 3-1.

Gyokeres answers critics

With Tottenham chasing the game under interim manager Igor Tudor, Arsenal maintained composure rather than retreating.

Gyokeres added a fourth in stoppage time, overpowering Archie Gray before finishing emphatically to complete his brace.

The Swedish forward’s double offered a timely response to recent criticism, while Eze’s performance marked a significant return to form.

Prior to the derby, he had started only four of Arsenal’s previous 15 league matches, despite featuring regularly.

Under the watch of England head coach Thomas Tuchel, Eze delivered when Arsenal required a little bit of clarity on their title stance.
