Probe El-Rufai Over Links To Insecurity, Corruption – Deji Adeyanju To DSS, EFCC

Civil rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai over allegations of corruption and questions surrounding his handling of insecurity during his tenure.

In a statement on Thursday, Adeyanju urged the anti-corruption agency and the intelligence service to act with fairness and independence.

According to him, accountability must apply to all public officials, past or present.

He described as “strange”, the assertions of political persecution allegedly advanced by El-Rufai, arguing that the former governor’s tenure was frequently criticized for suppressing opposing voices.

Adeyanju claimed that multiple critics among them activists, clerics and political commentators, allegedly faced detention, harassment, or intimidation during that period.

He further asked the DSS to investigate purportedly contentious security strategies linked to El-Rufai’s administration, including allegations that financial inducements were given to violent groups.

According to him, such claims raise profound national security concerns and warrant a comprehensive investigation.

Adeyanju said: “I call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately investigate former Governor Nasir El-Rufai over allegations of corruption and his handling of insecurity during his time in office. No one should be above the law.

“If there are questions about financial misconduct or abuse of office, he must give a full account, and the relevant agencies must not succumb to any form of blackmail or intimidation.

“It is strange to hear claims of political persecution from a man whose administration was repeatedly accused of silencing critics.

“Several individuals who spoke against his government, including activists, religious leaders, and public commentators, were reportedly arrested, harassed, or intimidated.

“The unresolved disappearance of one of his prominent critics, who was abducted in front of his family, remains a painful reminder of that era and must not be forgotten.

“Furthermore, the DSS should investigate reported claims that his government engaged in controversial security arrangements, including allegations that payments were made to violent actors.”

BREAKING: Judge Withdraws From EFCC Case Against Ex-AGF, Abubakar Malami

On Thursday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Abuja Federal High Court recused himself from two cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

The judge, recently reassigned to the cases by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, cited personal reasons and the need to uphold the interest of justice for his decision to withdraw.

The development came as a civil suit seeking the forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami was called for mention in court.

The cases were initially handled by Justice Emeka Nwite, who served as a vacation judge during the Christmas period.

Malami is also being prosecuted by the Federal Government, through the Department of State Services, DSS, for alleged terrorism financing.

My Lecture At Dangote University Cancelled Last Minute’– Rotimi Amaechi Alleges Political Motive

Former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has responded to the last-minute cancellation of a lecture he was set to deliver at Aliko Dangote University in Kano.

Amaechi told journalists in Kano on Wednesday evening that the university informed him of the cancellation just two hours before the event was due to begin.

He said he had already arrived in Kano for the programme, RFI Hausa reports.

According to the report, the management of the university had earlier approved his visit. The invitation came from the student leaders who asked him to speak to them.

Amaechi said he was surprised by the sudden decision.

“I was informed only two hours before the programme that the lecture had been cancelled,” he said.

He added that the university told him the event was called off due to security concerns.

The former Rivers State governor said that, as a law-abiding citizen, he decided not to go ahead with the programme after it was cancelled.

Amaechi, however, alleged that the development was politically motivated, adding that the Tinubu government is afraid, and that is why it has started taking such steps against opposition figures.

They initially pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against them.

At the resumed sitting on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, counsel to the first and third defendants,  Bridget Omateno, informed the court that the defendants would like to change their pleas from “not guilty” to “guilty.”

When the charges were re-read to them, both Haoyu and Hongxu pleaded “guilty” to the charges filed against them, while Audu maintained his plea of “not guilty.”

Following the guilty pleas of both Haoyu and Hongxu, who are directors in the company, the prosecution counsel, Bilikisu Bala- Buhari stated that the prosecution had earlier called two witnesses before the change of plea.

She urged the court to impose the maximum punishment of life imprisonment on counts 1, 2 and 3, and 14 years’ imprisonment on counts 4 to 7.

The court  also ordered that they undertake three days of community service and be repatriated after serving their sentences and completing the community service.

The matter was adjourned till April 29, 2026 for the continuation of trial involving Audu Friday, who maintained his not guilty plea.

Port Harcourt Refinery Ready To Resume Operations — PENGASSAN

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has stated that the old Port Harcourt Refinery has been rehabilitated to roughly 90 percent and could recommence operations within a week, pending approval from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd).

The PENGASSAN President, Mr Festus Osifo, disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

His remarks come amid renewed debate over the future of Nigeria’s state-owned refineries, following comments by NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, who described the reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery as a potential waste of resources.

Osifo said the refinery is technically ready for operation, explaining that the delay in restarting the plant is largely due to profitability considerations rather than mechanical issues.

“As of today, you can start the old Port Harcourt refinery, and it will function. You can put it on today, and it will function. However, NNPCL as a company is there to make a profit,” he said.

“So, if they want to start it today, within the next week, they can bring it back to life. It has been rehabilitated up to about 90 per cent.”

He noted that operating the refinery could result in financial losses depending on crude oil costs and product pricing.

“If you feed crude oil worth, say, five million dollars into the old Port Harcourt refinery, what you are likely to get at the other end when you sell the petroleum products may be about 4.5 million dollars,” Osifo added.

Despite these concerns, the PENGASSAN president maintained that funds spent on the rehabilitation were not wasted, citing significant upgrades carried out at the facility.

According to him, critical components, including compressors, control rooms, and panels, were replaced and remain installed, adding that the refinery’s asset value has improved compared to its pre-rehabilitation state.

Nigeria Has More People Living In Poverty Than China And India Combined – Peter Obi Laments

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has lamented that Nigeria has become one of the world’s hungriest and most insecure nations.

Peter Obi spoke in Asaba, Delta State, on Saturday, during the official declaration and integration of the state Obidient Movement into the African Democratic Congress, where he called on Nigerians to unite and rescue the country from bad governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election decried the rising poverty level in the country, noting that about 150 million Nigerians were currently living below the poverty line, which he described as unacceptable.

“Our country today has more people living in poverty than China and India combined. These two countries are nearly three billion and we are just 250 million but we have more people living in poverty than the two of them combined,” Obi said.

He added, “Our country today is one of the most insecure country of the world. Our country today is one of the hungriest in the world.”

Obi further criticised the Federal Government’s economic management, alleging that more loans had been accumulated after the removal of fuel subsidy than by previous administrations combined.

According to him, Nigeria’s challenges cut across ethnic and religious divides, stressing the need for collective action.

“It is no longer time we can talk about tribe; no tribe buys bread cheaper; it is not a time for religion; no religion buys bread cheaper. They are all suffering,” he said.

Obi maintained that Nigeria’s problems stem from poor leadership rather than lack of resources, expressing optimism that a new political direction could change the country’s trajectory.

“This country is not poor; it is being badly led,” Obi said, reiterating that the African Democratic Congress was committed to providing solutions to the nation’s challenges.

“We want to do the right thing for the country; the country has suffered enough,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Deputy National Chairman of the ADC for the South-South zone, Senator Andrew Uchendu, said Nigeria had failed in virtually all sectors, stressing the need for urgent reforms and responsible leadership to address the country’s socio-economic and security challenges.

Nigerians React As President Tinubu Spends 23 Days On Foreign Trips In January Alone

Many Nigerians have taken to various platforms to express their views on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips.

The President spent 23 days abroad in January 2026 alone, having departed Nigeria for Europe on December 28, 2025.

Recall that the President spent nine days in France for End-of-year break and holiday. He proceeded to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, where he spent seven days for the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Week 2026.

He then jetted to Turkey on a state visit where he spent another six days before returning to Nigeria.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi is among those who have criticized Tinubu over his incessant foreign trips amid insecurity in Nigeria.

Obi, who said the President had already spent 23 days on foreign trips just in the month of January, stressed that the first month of the year serves as a critical measure of the challenges that lie ahead, decrying that the situation in the country continues to worsen.

A cross-section of Nigerians have now expressed their mixed feelings over the President’s trips.

For Divine Akor, it is outrageous for the President to have spent 23 days outside the country within one month.

He said at a time of crushing inflation, hunger, and worsening insecurity, the statistics raise serious questions and concerns about the fate of Nigerians in the hands of the President.

“I know very well that Tinubu’s protagonists will come up with  the usual defense in an attempt to justify such frequent foreign trips by saying- it’s for  economic diplomacy, investor talks and global engagement. These are mere gimmicks to exonerate their paymasters.

“We can only accept such propositions or reasons when there is valid evidence of the positive impacts of such foreign trips. Diplomacy, global networking etc, without verifiable results is just  a glorified excursion or frequent flying.

“From what I have seen so far, all I can say is that the foreign trip is for a subtle foreign medical care, personal relaxation or running to a serene atmosphere from the volatile political and security situations in Nigeria.

“If we say they’re for global networking and investments, where are the investments such trips have attracted to Nigeria since he started long ago? We see foreign Companies folding up and new investors are not coming as it used to be under President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Where are the jobs created through the frequent trips? Where is the relief Nigerians can feel?” He asked.

Speaking also, Michael Ameh said President Tinubu had preached the need for Nigerians to make sacrifices, asking why the same president cannot show examples by living a life of sacrifices.

According to him, it is not right to preach sacrifice at home while the president is projecting personal comfort abroad, especially when hardship is whipping Nigerians.

“Leadership in crisis demands presence, urgency, and empathy- not prolonged absence. No one says a president shouldn’t travel. But excessive travel during national hardship looks less like strategy and more like detachment. Nigeria doesn’t need more handshakes overseas.

“It needs proactive decision, direction, and delivery at home. How many other world leaders spend such a humongous time in another country? It’s only in Nigeria we see this kind of absurdity every tenure,” he lamented.

He charged the President to make every Nigerian feel the impact of his trips if he claims they are for the good of Nigerians and not personal gains.

“We want to see investors trooping in to Nigeria, we want to see jobs popping up, infrastructure, improved electricity supply, reduction in inflation and overall upsurge in the standard of living.

“If we don’t see, then it is obvious it’s for personal vacation, medical care and so on, which is not healthy for Nigeria,” he added.

On his part, Paul Igbashangev said the President’s incessant foreign trips, especially spending 23 days in the month of January, feels like he is jet-setting more than governing.

He said, “Honestly, I’m a bit concerned about President Tinubu’s foreign trips. I mean, 23 days abroad in January alone? We have got pressing issues at home – insecurity, economic hardship, infrastructure decay… and he’s swanning off to France, UAE, Turkey? Some folks are saying he is out there networking instead of fixing Nigeria.

“Look, I am not saying these trips can’t yield benefits, but where is the tangible outcome for the average Nigerian? Agreements, partnerships…show me the results! He has been president for over two years and we are still struggling.

“Billions spent on foreign trips in two years? That is a lot of money! Shouldn’t he be focusing on making life better for Nigerians instead of racking up travel miles? What do you think, is he doing enough? The answer is no!”

Similarly, Augustine Oyiwona said Nigerians are sceptical about President Tinubu’s frequent visit to foreign countries due to the high cost of such trips -especially during the economic hardship and other domestic issues that need urgent leadership attention like insecurity, hike in fuel prices, unemployment, and rising inflation.

He, however, said that foreign trips are not inherently bad and can be justified if Nigerians can see tangible outcomes.

“Some of the benefits attached to those visits are that it attracts foreign investors to the country’s growing economy and the active engagement of President Tinubu with the highly industrialised countries of the world helps Nigeria to maintain regional and global influence as the giant of Africa.

“Debt talks, trade deals, energy cooperation and security partnerships often require face to face diplomacy. These foreign trips also can improve security cooperation as we recently see between Nigeria and the United States of America,” he added.

In the same vein, Abdulkadir Hassan stressed that one of the functions of a President is to ensure there is a mutual relationship between the country and other international countries.

He stated that the 23-day international trip of President Bola Tinubu to some countries was in line with his exclusive duties, adding that he has visited France, the United Arab Emirate, Turkey, in the month of January to ensure that Nigeria strengthens its bound in economics, security, and social development with these countries.

“It may look absurd to some individuals that Mr President is out of the country for 23 days, but it is very imperative for a leader of a country like Nigeria to visit some international countries to discuss critical and relevant issues.

“It can be noted that the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, ADSW, 2026, serves as a crucial platform for Nigeria to secure investment, accelerate its renewable energy transition, and foster international partnerships for sustainable development.

“Also, the visit to Turkey by Mr President is also an economic acceleration for Nigeria because at the end of the meeting, the two countries signed agreements on diaspora policy, defence cooperation, joint declaration establishing the economy and trade joint committee, halal quality infrastructure, higher education, media and communication, diplomacy academy, among others.

“For this, the trip wasn’t done in isolation but to develop Nigeria and the Nigerians at large,”he stated.
