According to the Registrar, 95,160 candidates eventually sat for the examination.

He said the registered candidates comprised 51,823 males, representing 53.43 per cent, and 45,156 females, accounting for 46.56 per cent.

Providing a breakdown of performance, Wushishi revealed that 93,425 candidates sat for English Language, out of which 73,167 candidates, representing 78.32 per cent, obtained credit and above.

Similarly, he stated that 93,330 candidates sat for Mathematics, with 85,256 candidates, representing 91.35 per cent, securing credit and above.

He added that 82,082 candidates, representing 86.26 per cent, recorded five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.

Wushishi, however, expressed concern over the increase in examination malpractice recorded during the examination.

According to him, 9,016 candidates were booked for various forms of malpractice, representing a 31.7 per cent increase compared to the 6,160 cases recorded during the 2024 external SSCE.

The Registrar announced that five supervisors were recommended for blacklisting for aiding and abetting examination malpractice.

He said the affected supervisors included two from the Federal Capital Territory and one each from Kano, Adamawa and Ondo states.

In addition, Wushishi disclosed that four examination centres were recommended for de-recognition after being found culpable of whole-centre malpractice.

He said two of the centres were from Niger State, while one each was from Yobe and Kano states.

Nigerian Govt To Share Electricity Subsidy Burden With States, LGs

The Federal Government has announced plans to end its sole responsibility for electricity subsidies, unveiling a new framework that will see the costs shared among the federal, state, and local governments starting in 2026.

The Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Yakubu, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during a training and sensitisation workshop for ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, on the 2026 post-budget preparation process, conducted using the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System, GIFMIS, Budget Preparation Sub-System.

Yakubu said President Bola Tinubu had directed that electricity subsidies be clearly identified, properly monitored and equitably distributed across all tiers of government, warning that the existing arrangement had created hidden liabilities and repeated crises within the power sector.

“If we want a stable power sector, we must pay for the choices we make. When tariffs are held below cost, a gap is created. That gap is a subsidy. And a subsidy is a bill,” Yakubu said.

He explained that from 2026, electricity subsidies would no longer be treated as an unlimited federal responsibility, particularly where policy decisions and political benefits are jointly shared by multiple levels of government.

“In 2026, we will stop pretending that this bill can be left to the Federal Government alone, especially where the policy choice or the political benefit is shared across tiers of government,” he said.

According to the Budget Office chief, the President has instructed that existing laws governing the electricity sector be fully applied to ensure that subsidy-sharing arrangements are transparent, practical and enforceable.

“This means subsidy costs must be explicit, tracked and funded, so they do not resurface as arrears, liquidity shortfalls or hidden market liabilities.

“If any tier of government chooses affordability interventions, the funding responsibilities must be clear, agreed and enforceable,” Yakubu said.

He stressed that the policy was not punitive but designed to align incentives across government and promote efficiency within the power market.

“This is not punishment. It is alignment,” he said, adding: “When everyone carries a fair share of the cost, everyone also has an incentive to support cost-reflective efficiency, targeted protection for the vulnerable, and a power market that can actually deliver.”

Yakubu urged MDAs to clearly reflect subsidy-related obligations in their 2026 budget submissions and avoid transferring unfunded liabilities into the electricity value chain.

Beyond electricity subsidies, he said the 2026 Budget would mark a decisive shift away from rollover budgeting and fragmented project listings, which he noted had weakened implementation and accountability over the years.

“The 2026 Budget corrects this. It is built as one coherent implementation framework,” he said. “The approach is to consolidate commitments into a single, visible pipeline and manage them as a disciplined programme of delivery.”

Describing the model as a “single-train” framework, Yakubu said it would enhance prioritisation, strengthen control mechanisms and eliminate duplication across government.

“One plan. One pipeline. One execution logic,”he said. “It allows the government to know, at any point, what we have committed to deliver.”

He also disclosed that President Tinubu had ordered a review of the Fiscal Responsibility framework to make fiscal rules more dynamic and enforceable rather than discarding them entirely.

“Fiscal rules are the guardrails of the government,” Yakubu said. “Without guardrails, spending becomes impulsive, debt becomes casual, and the budget becomes a statement of intent rather than a tool of delivery.”

According to him, the review will introduce clearer fiscal anchors, better-defined escape clauses for genuine shocks, and a credible return-to-compliance pathway, alongside stronger reporting on contingent liabilities.

For MDAs, he said the changes would significantly alter how proposals are evaluated.

“You will not only be asked what you want to spend. You will be asked how it fits the fiscal rules, how it affects sustainability, and what measurable results it will deliver,” he said.

Yakubu also revealed that the 2026 Budget would deepen the transition from long project lists to structured project financing, insisting that capital proposals must be both delivery-ready and, where applicable, finance-ready.

“A long list of projects is not a development strategy,” he said. “What citizens feel is delivery, completed roads, reliable power, functional schools and working hospitals.”

He explained that projects submitted for funding must demonstrate readiness, clear sequencing, defined financing strategies, measurable outputs and realistic timelines, noting that fewer but well-funded projects would yield greater impact.

Yakubu described the GIFMIS Budget Preparation Sub-System as central to restoring credibility to the budgeting process, calling it “the operating system for credible budgeting” that enhances transparency and traceability from submission to execution.

“The success of the Renewed Hope Agenda is shared,” he said. “The Budget Office will coordinate and enforce standards, but delivery depends on every MDA. Nigerians expect results, and through a credible 2026 Budget, we must deliver.”

2027: I’ll Run As Presidential Candidate – Peter Obi Rejects VP Role

Peter Obi, a leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has indicated his intention to contest for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He revealed this ambition while addressing supporters at a campaign event for the ADC candidates in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Area Council elections, which took place at the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC.

In his remarks, Obi made it clear that he is aiming for the top position and would not settle for a subordinate role in the party’s long-term political strategy.

He stressed that the AMAC election is closely tied to his wider political aspirations and called on party faithful and local residents to throw their weight behind the ADC candidate.

According to Obi, success in the AMAC poll would play a crucial role in advancing his political mission, adding that his involvement in the coming elections is as a leading contender and not in a supporting capacity.

“This coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you,” Obi said.

Obi’s supporters, particularly members of the Obidient Movement, have intensified pressure on the ADC leadership to adopt him as the party’s standard-bearer for 2027, with many insisting that the ticket should go to Obi alone.

However, the ADC is hosting several other high-profile politicians with presidential ambitions, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

He’s Spent 23 Days Already On Foreign Trips – Peter Obi Slams President Tinubu

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu over his frequent foreign trips amid worsening insecurity in Nigeria.

In a post on his verified X handle, Obi said the president has already spent 23 days on foreign trips just in the month of January.

According to him, the first month of the year serves as a critical measure of the challenges that lie ahead, decrying that the situation in the country continues to worsen.

“This month, he spent 23 days abroad across two trips—beginning the year overseas and returning on the 17th, and departing less than 10 days on the 26th to Türkiye, where he remains as of January 31.

“Insecurity has surged alarmingly across the nation. In just January, we saw reports of several killings, hundreds of kidnappings and abductions that include children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers with the abductors demanding millions,” he wrote.

Undergraduates Can Take UTME But Must Declare Status – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has stated that candidates who are already enrolled in tertiary institutions may register for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry, but must formally declare their matriculation status, otherwise, they risk losing both admissions.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Board’s Public Communication Adviser, Dr Fabian Benjamin, who said the directive had been misrepresented by individuals he described as “self-styled education advocates,” leading to confusion among candidates and parents.

“The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has been drawn to a misleading and unfortunate distortion of a portion of the board’s clear directives to candidates registering for the 2026 UTME/DE, as contained in the 2026 UTME/DE advertisement.

“This deliberate misrepresentation is being propagated by some unscrupulous self-styled education advocates for parochial interests,”Benjamin said.

He noted that such misinterpretations often emerge at the start of every registration cycle, accusing some commentators of spreading false narratives without properly understanding the guidelines.

“Many of them do not take the time to read or properly understand the guidelines, yet hastily rush to the public space with false narratives aimed solely at attracting traffic to their social media platforms,” he said.

Benjamin stressed that registering for UTME or DE while still enrolled in another institution is not prohibited, but failing to disclose that status is considered an offence under JAMB regulations.

“For the avoidance of doubt and for record purposes, and in line with its statutory mandate to prevent multiple matriculations, the board directed that all candidates registering for the 2026 UTME/DE must disclose their matriculation status, where applicable,” he said.

He added, “It is not an offence for a candidate to register for the UTME/DE while still enrolled in an institution. However, failure to disclose such a status constitutes an offence.

“Disclosure simply means that once a candidate secures admission through the latest registration, the former admission automatically ceases to subsist. The law is explicit that no candidate is permitted to hold two admissions concurrently.”

According to Benjamin, the policy has become more critical following discoveries that some already-matriculated students have been involved in examination malpractice as hired test takers.

“Mandatory disclosure, therefore, expedites appropriate action whenever such candidates are apprehended,” he said.

While noting that JAMB’s systems are capable of detecting previous matriculation records, he warned that candidates who fail to make the required disclosure could forfeit both their existing admission and any new one obtained through the examination process.

“The board, therefore, urges the public to be cautious of these so-called education advocates who are perpetually eager to mislead candidates and parents for selfish gain.

“Members of the public are advised to carefully read official guidelines and avoid accepting distorted interpretations wholesale,” he added.

JAMB also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of its examinations.

The board had earlier announced that registration for the 2026 UTME began on January 26, adding that only Computer-Based Test centres with facilities that allow remote monitoring would be permitted to participate.

It said the policy, tagged “No Vision, No Registration, No UTME,” is aimed at reducing registration irregularities and strengthening confidence in the examination process.

Nigerian Security Agents Are Impersonating Nnamdi Kanu On Social Media – Family Raises Alarm

The family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has sounded the alarm over what it claims is the impersonation of the pro-Biafra activist on social media by agents of the Nigerian government.

A statement released on Thursday by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family, said several accounts have been opened in Nnamdi Kanu’s name especially on Facebook and Instagram, seeking engagement with members of the public.

The family warned that the fake accounts are being used to spread disinformation to damage the reputation of Kanu and IPOB, and also target his supporters for possible victimization.

Stressing that Kanu does not have any social media account since his incarceration, the statement read, “The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), hereby issues this urgent public safety warning to the general public.

“It has come to our attention that fraudulent social media accounts, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, are impersonating Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. These fake pages — often using official-looking logos, claiming locations such as Nairobi or Sokoto, and posting misleading updates — are not associated with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB, or the Kanu family in any way.

“Since his illegal rendition and detention in June 2021, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has had no active or verified online presence on any social media platform. He does not operate Facebook pages, Instagram accounts, or any other profiles posting personal messages, location updates, or soliciting engagement.

“These impostor pages are part of a sustained deceptive operation, believed to be orchestrated by Nigerian security agencies and their collaborators. Their objectives include: harvesting your personal information, contacts, and data from unsuspecting followers and likers.

“Spreading disinformation to damage the reputation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB. Provoking or monitoring genuine supporters for potential harassment, surveillance, and arrest.”

Warning against any interaction with the said social media accounts, the statement added, “We strongly advise the public as follows: Do not follow, like, comment on, share, or engage with any such fake pages.

“Immediately unlike and unfollow any suspicious account claiming to represent Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Report these fraudulent pages to the platforms as impersonation/scam accounts. Rely solely on verified IPOB channels, primarily through official handles and trusted media affiliates such as Radio Biafra.”

According to the family, anyone who choses to interact with the fake pages does so at their own risk.

“Exposure of personal details could lead to severe consequences in the current climate of repression against the Biafran struggle.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains committed to the peaceful, non-violent pursuit of self-determination for Biafrans. We will continue to expose these dirty tactics and call for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,”the statement added.
