BREAKING: National Assembly Approves N70bn As ‘Support For New Lawmakers’

An amendment to the N819.5 billion 2022 supplementary budget, approving N70 billion to support the “working condition” of new lawmakers, has been passed by the National Assembly, on Thursday.

The amendment, among others, seeks to provide N500 billion palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

The amendment was passed in both the Senate and the House of Representatives a day after President Bola Tinubu sent the request to the parliament.

The breakdown of the amended N819.5 billion supplementary budget showed that N500 billion is for palliatives to cushion the effect of recent subsidy removal policy, which will be domiciled in Finance ministry.

The detail also showed that N185 billion is for Ministry of Works and Housing to alleviate the impact of the severe flooding experienced in the country in 2022 on road infrastructure across the six geopolitical zones.

The sum of N19.2 billion is allocated to Ministry of Agriculture to ameliorate the massive destruction to farmlands across the country during the severe flooding experienced last year; N35 billion to National Judicial Council; N10 billion to Federal Capital Territory Administration for critical projects and N70 billion to National Assembly to support the working conditions of new members.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly also approved President Tinubu’s request to borrow $800 million from the World Bank.

Daily Trust reports that former President Muhammadu Buhari had, towards the tail end of his administration, forwarded same request to the 9th Senate in May.

But the 9th Assembly could not consider the request before its tenure ended in June 11.

Tinubu, in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary Thursday, asked the 10th Senate to approve the same borrowing request.

The president, in the letter, explained that the loan would be used to scale up the National Social Safety Net Programme.

Tinubu’s letter reads: “Please note that the federal executive council led by President Muhammadu Buhari approved an additional loan facility to the tune of $800 million to be secured from the World Bank for the National Social Safety Net programme. Copy of FEC’s extract attached.

“You may also wish to note that the purpose of the facility is to expand coverage of shock responsive safety net support among the poor and vulnerable Nigerians. This will assist them in coping with basic needs.

“You may further wish to note that under the conditional cash transfer window of the programme, the federal government of Nigeria will transfer the sum of N8,000 per month to 12 million poor and low income households for a period of six months, with a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals.

“In order to guarantee the credibility of the process, digital transfers will be made directly to beneficiaries’ accounts and mobile wallets.

“It is expected that the programme, will stimulate economic activities in the informal sector, and improve nutrition, health, education, and human capital development of beneficiaries’ households.

“Given the above, I wish to invite the Senate to kindly grant approval for the additional loan facility of $800 million to be secured from World Bank for the National Social Safety Net Programme.

“While hoping that this submission will receive expeditious consideration by the Senate, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

Napoli President Sets €200m Price Tag On Osimhen, Says Only PSG Can Afford Him

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has placed a price-tag on Victor Osimhen.
According to him, the only club that can afford Osimhen is Paris Saint-Germain.
According to him, Osimhen’s price is 200 million euros.
The striker is in negotiations to extend his contract and so far the Partenopei are resisting the idea of a release clause.
“The only club that can afford to take Osimhen away from us is Paris Saint-Germain,” De Laurentiis told Sport Mediaset.
“So if Nasser Al-Khelaifi wants to take out 200 or so, then we will wait and evaluate.”
It is reported no clubs have been prepared to go over €100m so far, especially a concern because the asking price was believed to be in the region of €150m.
This evening, De Laurentiis revealed it is even higher than that and this is why he is confident the Nigeria international will remain this season.
The €200m price-tag would make Osimhen one of the most expensive signings of all time, but would be one of the options if Kylian Mbappe were to leave.
Still only 24 years of age, the Nigerian was Capocannoniere last term with 26 goals in 32 Serie A appearances and helped Napoli win their first title in 33 years.

Subsidy Removal: I’m Aware That Nigerians Are Suffering – President Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that he is aware of the sufferings experienced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy.

He assured Nigerians that the decision was in the best interest of the country, especially in guaranteeing future prosperity.

The President stated this when he received the 18 governors who served with him, Class of 1999, at the Presidential Villa, on July 12. He assured Nigerians that the framework for palliatives to remedy the effects of fuel subsidy removal was being worked out.

Tinubu said the government will increase effort, speed up the process and ensure a full-proof social security structure that will not be compromised, especially in cash-transfer.

“I understand that our people are suffering yet there can be no childbirth without pain. The joy of childbirth is the relief that comes after the pain. Nigeria is reborn already with fuel subsidy removal. It is a rebirth of the country for the largest number over a few smugglers. Please tell the people to be a little patient.

The palliative is coming. I don’t want cash-transfer to fall into wrong hands. I know it pinches and it is difficult. In the end, we will rejoice in the prosperity of our country,’’ he told the governors, who were led by former Governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion.

Why I Boycott Headies Award – Rapper Erigga

Nigerian hip-hop artist Erhiga Agarivbie aka Erigga has opened up on why he boycotts the Headies Award every year.
According to him, he started boycotting Headies after his 2020 album ‘The Erigma II’ lost out in the Best Rap Album category at the 14th edition of the award show.
He accused Headies organisers of disrespecting artists from the South-South region.
Erigga made the allegations via his Twitter handle on Wednesday, hours after the nominees for the 16th Headies were announced.
Despite releasing an album, ‘The Lost Boy,’ in the year under review, the Warri-born rapper did not secure any nominations.
Venting his anger on Twitter, Erigga shared the art cover of his 2020 album ‘The Erigma II’, with the caption: “Na from here I don take boycott all these f*ckers (Headies) the disrespect was too much for the south south to take… If you don’t like us and not going to respect our craft then it’s f*ck you and everything you represent; that’s it.”
