NFF Denies Knowledge Of Press Statement Criticizing Dessers And Troost-Ekong After Bafana vs Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has disowned a post-match statement that criticized Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Cyriel Dessers after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in the Group C 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The statement, purportedly issued under the name of NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, accused Dessers of being sluggish and faulted Troost-Ekong for the own goal that gave Bafana Bafana the lead.

It read in part: “Cyriel Dessers, who had an unimpressive game in Uyo where he was a substitute that was substituted, did not have a better game as he was too slow to latch onto passes, could not win aerial balls and did little in bringing alive the Nigerian attack.”

On Troost-Ekong, it added: “The Super Eagles’ fighting spirit was diminished for a period after team captain William Ekong inadvertently swept the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali to give the Bafana the lead and great impetus.”

However, NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, has stated that the statement did not represent the official position of the Federation.

“I saw the release just like everyone else did. Nobody in the Federation is happy with it; the NFF did not authorise that statement. We have great respect for all the players. Blaming an individual for a team result is unfair.

“When we win, it’s a team victory. When we lose, it’s also collective. No player should be singled out. Ekong’s own goal was unfortunate—his intention was to clear the ball. Anyone who knows football understands that such things happen,” Sanusi said.

He further assured that the Federation remains united and focused on the remaining qualifiers and the upcoming AFCON 2025 in Morocco.

“Our house is in order. We’re preparing for the rest of the qualifiers and the AFCON in Morocco. There’s no problem with our players or coaching crew. The government and the NFF are proud of the players’ efforts,” he added.

Sanusi confirmed that internal disciplinary action would be taken over the unauthorised release.

“I can assure you the NFF will take action on the matter,” he stated.

The Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C with 11 points from eight matches, while South Africa lead with 17 points. Nigeria must win their remaining fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic in October and hope other results go in their favour to keep their qualification hopes alive.

National Grid Collapses — First Time In 2025

The national power grid suffered a collapse on Wednesday.

Data obtained from the independent system operator (ISO) showed that the megawatt (MW) generated dropped from 2,917.83 (MW) to 1.5 (MW) between 11 am and 12 pm.

In a post on Twitter, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the loss of power from the national grid.

“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the company said.

“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant shareholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

On February 12, some parts of Nigeria were without electricity after the national grid experienced a system collapse, confirmed by electricity distribution companies.

On the same day, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) denied reports claiming that the national grid collapsed twice in 2025.

Similarly, in January, the commission denied reports of a national grid collapse.

On July 4, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said there was no grid collapse in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

However, the commission said it continues to propel the system operator (SO) to improve its system coordination activities.

Nigeria’s national grid suffered many collapses in the past year, leading to nationwide blackouts.

In 2024, the national grid collapsed 11 times.

Why We Got A Draw Against Super Eagles – Bafana Bafana Coach

Hugo Broos, the Bafana Bafana head coach, has commended his players for matching Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash was fiercely contested, with William Troost-Ekong inadvertently turning the ball into his own net in the 25th minute to hand South Africa the lead. Nigeria responded just before half-time through a powerful header from Calvin Bassey.

Broos revealed he had warned his players ahead of the encounter to prepare for a physically demanding contest against the Nigerians.

“It was a match like I expected—very physical, much harder from the opponent. In the second half they tried to win with power football, but we did a very good job also,”
Broos told SABC Sport.

“We had the power in our team as well. We fought for it. I told the players before the game, if you can’t win with good football, you have to do it with fighting. That’s exactly what they did. In the second half, they fought for every ball, every metre. Some players were completely exhausted but still sprinted. That shows their determination.”

The Belgian tactician emphasised the importance of the result in their qualification bid.

“This is a group that wants to go to the World Cup. Today was a crucial game. It was a draw—Nigeria stay on six points. Now it’s up to us to win one more game and then we have qualified.”

Broos also highlighted the team’s growth and maturity, contrasting it with their struggles in past years.

“Three, four years ago, when we played this kind of match, we always lost it. But today, we showed maturity. Our football was less, but the team spirit and fighting spirit were there. We were ready for the physical battle, and you can see what you can achieve when you fight together.”

Shade Ladipo Tenders Apology To Tiwa Savage Over S3x Tape Comments

Media personality Shade Ladipo has tendered an unreserved apology to singer Tiwa Savage.
According to Ladipo, she had to apologize over harsh words she made after the leak of the Tiwa’s private video in 2021.
At the time, Ladipo had slammed the singer.
In a post on Tuesday, she admitted that she was among those who condemned Tiwa at the time and said she now regrets judging her unfairly.
She explained that she had blamed the singer then but later realized her reaction was misplaced.
She said: “I was one of the people who blasted Tiwa Savage when that s3x tape came out. I’ll be honest. I blamed her. I was like, you know what? How can you be over 40? Cause we are mates and you’re still messing around with people like this.

“In hindsight, I wonder why I was blaming her so hard for something that happened to her.

“I felt her pain. And I just want to say to you, I love you. I’m sorry!”

PDP Condemns Moves to Block Senator Natasha’s Resumption at National Assembly

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate over moves to stop Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming at the Senate after what it called an unjust six months’ suspension imposed on her by the Senate leadership.
Recall that the Senate clerk had sent a letter to the suspended senator saying she cannot resume after the completion of her six-months suspension since the matter is in court and until the legal process is completed, she cannot resume  for her legislative activities in the red chamber.
In a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party said the reported action by the clerk smacked of a ‘calculated attempt being orchestrated by the Senator Godswill Akpabio-led All Progressives Congress (APC) Senate leadership to breach the right of representation of the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District and deny them a voice at the highest law-making body in the country.’
PDP in its statement said the attempt to use the National Assembly establishment against an elected Senator in gross violation of the provisions of the Constitution and Standing Rules of the Senate is highly provocative and constitutes a clear and present danger to democracy and overall stability of our country.
“It also comes as parts of the antics being deployed severally by the APC-controlled Senate and the Federal Government to suffocate the opposition which further confirms the creeping totalitarianism in our country under the APC government,” Ologungaba said in a statement.
He said the reported action by the Clerk of the National Assembly against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan further brings to the fore the allegations of attacks on the right of women and sustained attempts to stifle their voices as witnessed in the various accusations of harassment against women levelled against the current Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio over the years.
“The PDP demands that the Senate President should come clean on the various allegations instead of seeking to use the National Assembly establishment to further harass, intimidate and keep Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan away from the Senate.

The extreme persecution of six months suspension unjustly imposed on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, contrary to the Rules of the Senate is more than enough and the PDP stands with the people of Kogi Central and all well-meaning Nigerians in condemning this unwarranted renewed attack on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Our Party strongly cautions the Clerk of the National Assembly to withdraw the said letter and play by the rules by being neutral as a bureaucrat and not allow himself to be politically entangled and used as a tool to undermine democracy and the Rule of Law in the National Assembly and Nigeria.Nigerian fashion

The PDP calls on the International Community, Democracy Institutions, Right Advocacy Groups and other democracy development partners to rise up in condemnation of this renewed attack on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

While charging Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to discountenance the reported letter by the Clerk of the National Assembly and get ready to resume at the Senate, the PDP demands that the Senate leadership ensures that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is allowed to resume her duties and perform her roles as an elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria unhindered,” PDP said
