Dangote Petrol N65 Cheaper In Togo — Importers Claim

Several fuel importers in the country have claimed that the Dangote refinery sells a litre of petrol to international traders at N65 less than the price offered to local marketers in Nigeria.

The Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association of Nigeria, Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria confirmed this in separate exclusive interviews with Sunday PUNCH.

While kicking against the planned slashing of prices on Monday, DAPPMAN in particular said it was a ploy to stifle competition.

The Dangote refinery recently announced that it would drop petrol prices from N865 per litre to N841 in Lagos and the South West, and N851 in Abuja, Edo, and Kwara.
This would come alongside the commencement of its direct fuel distribution scheme.

In an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, the DAPPMAN Executive Secretary, Olufemi Adewole, told Sunday PUNCH that members of the group bought Dangote’s petrol from international traders in Lome, Togo, at prices lower than what was offered locally by the refinery.

Adewole said importers had made efforts to buy petrol from the Dangote refinery, but the price was higher, adding that sometimes, it could be better to import the product.

But the Dangote refinery downplayed the allegations, suggesting DAPPMAN might be the force behind the recent attack against it by the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.

NUPENG had accused the refinery of anti-union practices, including refusing to allow drivers to join the group. The union threatened to embark on industrial action over the matter.

Adewole told Sunday PUNCH that Alhaji Aliko Dangote once said he would crash prices whenever importers brought in fuel cargoes into Nigeria.

“So, anytime our cargoes are coming, we expect him to reduce the price. He may give a different reason for the reduction,”
he said.

“Dangote is selling to international traders at N65 lower than what he offers in Nigeria, or how is it possible for some of our members to buy from someone who bought from Dangote?

“Dangote sells to international traders at N65 cheaper than what he is selling to us. In some instances, we were able to buy from those people and still bring it to Nigeria. They will take the product to Lomé, claiming that they are buying large quantities.

“I have collated the volume of the products needed by DAPPMAN and sent to Dangote twice, yet he is not giving us products. What else does he want us to do? Even if he would give it to us, it would be with conditions that would not be profitable. Is that business?” he said.

Asked if it was cheaper to import petrol than to buy from the Dangote refinery, Adewole said, “It’s not all the time that it is cheaper. But there are instances in which it was cheaper to buy from international markets, and not only did we buy from international markets, we bought from international traders that Dangote sold to.”

When our correspondent sought to know what DAPPMAN’s requests were, he emphasised the need for discounts.

“Dangote has to give us a discount for the freight cost and other costs that we incur between his jetty and our jetty so that we can sell at the same price, and then we’ll be competitive. People will continue to import if the price is cheaper elsewhere,”
he added.

The National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, said DAPPMAN was right to say Dangote’s fuel was cheaper in Lome than in Nigeria.

“Exactly, DAPPMAN said the correct thing. It is true. We don’t want to be saying everything. But the way things are going, one day we will say everything,” Billy Gillis-Harry said.

Also, a major importer told Sunday PUNCH that his company refused to buy from Dangote because the margin was not favourable.

However, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, a spokesman for the refinery laughed off the allegations.

He said, “We now know who is behind NUPENG. Our free delivery starts Monday.”

The spokesman wondered when DAPPMAN members started buying petrol from Lomé, asking if they no longer patronised Russia and Malta.

Earlier, the DAPPMAN secretary said portraying Dangote refinery’s repeated fuel price cuts as patriotic gestures overlooked both their timing and effect on the market.

Adewole, in a statement on Saturday, said the price reductions were strategically timed when other importers had active cargoes at sea or in tanks, creating price shocks that undermined competition and imposed financial strain on fellow market participants, including the refinery’s domestic customers.

He said it was concerning that the refinery offered lower prices to international buyers while quoting higher rates to local off-takers.

This, he said, contradicted public-facing claims of prioritising Nigerians and placed unnecessary burdens on domestic businesses already operating under tight margins.

On the crisis between Dangote and NUPENG, the executive secretary said his group had watched the dispute with dismay.

“While the matter may not directly concern our association, we are alarmed by the tone, trajectory, and escalation of this issue. Beyond the reputational risks to various market participants, we are concerned about the potential impact this may have on ordinary Nigerians, particularly in a downstream environment still stabilising post-deregulation,”
he added.

Adewole noted that the assertion that Nigeria’s downstream stability rested solely on one refinery was dismissive of the broader ecosystem.

He said, “While we welcome the Dangote refinery as a major infrastructure project, its contribution has peaked at only 30 to 35 per cent of national demand. The balance continues to be supplied by responsible petroleum product marketers, including DAPPMAN members, who import and distribute under strict regulatory oversight by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.”

On Dangote’s direct free fuel distribution scheme, he said the claim was misleading.

“The claim that the refinery offers ‘free delivery’ is also misleading. In reality, marketers are required to lift at least 25 per cent of their allocations directly from the refinery gantry and must do so using only Dangote-owned trucks, paying commercial rates based on their destinations. This arrangement imposes additional logistical and financial burdens on marketers, limits operational flexibility, and undermines the narrative of cost relief being provided to the local market,”
he alleged.

While conceding that the Dangote refinery is a valuable contributor, Adewole said it was not a messiah.

The Dangote refinery said it would begin the rollout of compressed natural gas-powered trucks on Monday, as part of its logistics-free distribution programme aimed at significantly reducing fuel prices across the country.

La Liga: Barcelona thrash Valencia 6-0

Barcelona returned from the international break in style with a 6-0 demolition of Valencia in La Liga on Sunday, delivering a statement performance under Hansi Flick at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Forced to continue away from the Camp Nou due to ongoing renovation delays, the Catalan giants showed no signs of discomfort as they overwhelmed Los Che with a dominant second-half display.

Lopez sets the tone

Fermin Lopez gave Barça the perfect start, finding the net in the opening period to settle any early nerves.

The midfielder’s energy in attack proved crucial, with Flick’s side dictating the game throughout the first half despite Valencia holding firm for long spells.

Second-half rout

After the break, Flick’s substitutions turned the contest into a rout.

Raphinha doubled the lead shortly after coming on, before Lopez struck again to make it 3-0. Valencia, unable to contain the waves of pressure, collapsed further as Raphinha added his second.

Robert Lewandowski, gradually working back to full fitness after injury setbacks, entered the fray late on and showed his clinical edge with a quick-fire brace that sealed the 6-0 result.

Champions League focus next

The emphatic win lifts Barcelona’s spirits after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano prior to the international break and keeps the pressure on leaders Real Madrid, who have won all four of their opening matches.

Attention now shifts to Europe, with Barça set to open their Champions League campaign away at Newcastle United on September 18.

Meanwhile, club officials remain hopeful of completing their Camp Nou return in time to host Getafe on September 21, though uncertainty lingers.

Stop Confusing Nigerians About Your Loyalty – Tonye Cole Blasts Wike

Tonye Cole, former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, has criticized FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for maintaining ties with the ruling APC while still claiming membership of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Featuring on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television on Friday, Cole said Wike should not confuse people about his political loyalty.

“Is he APC or is he PDP? As far as we know today, he is PDP.

“We cannot continue confusing the electorate in Rivers State and confusing Nigerians because it is dangerous for democracy, that you are in one party, you are controlling another party and we are trying to create a one-party state that is a mixture that nobody is clear about,” he said.

Recall that during electioneering for the 2023 presidential election, Wike campaigned for the presidency to move to the South, against his party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who hails from the North.

The former Rivers State governor was later appointed as a minister by President Bola Tinubu.

He has expressed support for the second-term bid of the President in different fora.

On August 30, the APC won 20 out of the 23 councils during the local government election in Rivers.

The PDP won in three councils, including Obio/Akpo, where Wike served as the chairman for two terms in 1999 before he rose to become a governor, serving in that position from 2015 to 2023.

BBNaija: Housemates See Each Other N*ked – Ex-Contestant Adekunle Reveals

Former Big Brother Naija star, Adekunle Olapade, has disclosed that housemates on the reality show frequently see one another n*ked.

He made the claim while reacting to controversies trailing intimate videos involving Koyin and Isabella, as well as Jason Jae and Sultana.

Adekunle insinuated that some housemates were attracted to their colleagues of the opposite sex after seeing them nude.

“A lot of people who watch Big Brother Naija reality show are very hypocritical. Secondly, there is actually nothing wrong with two people who like each deciding to get intimate.

“All the housemates see each other n*ked, in case you don’t know. So, you cannot be in a house with somebody that you see without clothes almost everyday and not be attracted to the person. It won’t work,” Adekunle stated in a podcast interview with Pulse.

Adekunle Olapade featured in the Big Brother Naija reality show during the ‘Level Up’ season in 2022 and the All Stars season in 2023.

N5.7bn Contract: EFCC Secures Court Order To Detain Sujimoto CEO

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained a court order to detain Sijibomi Ogundele, Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, over an alleged N5.7 billion unexecuted contract.

Ogundele is being investigated by the Commission over alleged failure to deliver 22 Smart Green School projects in Enugu State after his company was reportedly paid the sum of N5.7 billion by the state government.

The Commission is currently quizzing Ogundele, who is in custody, to unravel how he spent the sum without executing the contract, as alleged by Enugu State government.

Also, there were indications that the EFCC might seek a court order to seize funds in Ogundele’s personal and company’s accounts, which had earlier been frozen.

An EFCC source said the remand order was secured from a Magistrate Court to detain him until the anti-graft agency was able to complete its investigation.

It would be recalled that Ogundele’s personal accounts and that of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited had earlier been frozen by the Commission, which also seized his international passport in order to restrict his movement until the completion of investigations into the alleged contract scam.

The source said there is evidence that the said sum was paid to Ogundele, adding that the EFCC was equally in possession of the terms of the contract and the documents showing his failure to comply with the contractual obligation.

“He is expected to explain how he spent the N5.7 billion or refund the money. His case looks straightforward,”
the EFCC source said.

Explaining further, the source said Ogundele’s accounts were frozen in case the investigation gets to a stage where the Commission would approach the courts for forfeiture of the funds.

The EFCC source disclosed that, from next week, the Sujimoto CEO, Ogundele, will interface with top officials of Enugu State Government as part of investigations into the case.

The EFCC had declared Ogundele wanted penultimate Friday for alleged money laundering.

However, Ogundele immediately went on X to blame the Enugu State Government for the EFCC’s action.

He said the contract was underpriced, and also cited inflation as a reason for the inability to complete the project.

Responding to Ogundele’s claims, the Enugu State government alleged that the Sujimoto CEO disappeared after collecting N5.7 billion as 50 percent mobilization fee to deliver 22 Smart Green Schools in six months, being February 2025.

Parts of the state government’s response read: “The Enugu State Government paid the sum of N5,762,565,475.25, representing 50 per cent of the contract sum, in order to fast-track the projects at all the sites.

“Rather than play to the rules of the contract, Mr. Ogundele resorted to shoddy jobs and the use of inexperienced workers and quack engineers.

“None of his sites little jobs done on the sites met the structural integrity of the projects as specified in the structural drawing.

“Worse still, he vanished into thin air with the money. All efforts made by the government to get him to a roundtable to discuss the quality and progress of work proved abortive.

“He equally refused to attend the periodic projects briefing organised by the state government for all contractors or take numerous calls and messages put across to him.

“In fact, he practically abandoned the sites, leaving the Enugu State Government with no other choice but to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to recover the funds paid to him.

“A joint team of officers of the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the EFCC visited the 22 sites to evaluate the progress of work on May 8 and 9, 2025, where it was clearly established that there had been minimal to no significant work done at the said sites one year after the contract award.

“In some cases, he fraudulently did not do excavation for all the blocks in site. It is also on record that he has not shown up at the sites or made himself available to either the state government or the law enforcement agencies

“The government has since retaken and handed over the sites to new firms, which have no choice but to start the construction afresh. It is equally noteworthy that there were other firms awarded multiple number of Smart Green School projects and they are delivering quality jobs on target.”

Pictures that accompanied the Enugu State government’s response showed that the project sites were mostly at the levels of foundation and DPC, with a few at the stage of block work.

The government also disclosed that many other contractors had completed similar projects.

One of the contractors involved in the execution of the Smart Green School project, Benneth Nwatu, MD/CEO of Ever Progressive Integrated Resources Venture, in his testimony, said, “Our company has completed multiple projects here.

“For example, we handled the Smart Green School at Ugwuomu Nike, the one at Queens School, and another one at Inyi in Oji River.

“One thing about the governor is that he is somebody who is happy when somebody shows capacity.

“When we completed the project at Queens School within six months, the government graciously awarded us more jobs. The ones we are handling at Ekulu Girls and Iva Valley are also almost completed.”

Man gives review after tasting from Hilda Baci’s largest pot of jollof cook-off

One of the attendees at Chef Hilda Baci’s Guinness World Record attempt for the largest pot of jollof rice has stirred online reactions after sharing a less-than-impressed review of the historic meal.

The event, which kicked off on Friday at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, saw 200 bags of rice cooked, a reduction from the 250 bags initially announced.

Despite the celebratory mood and large turnout of over 20,000 people, the cook-off was not without setbacks, including the dramatic collapse of the giant pot during the weighing process.

By Saturday morning, portions of the record-breaking jollof rice were distributed to attendees, with many eager to have a taste.

A viral video showed one young man expressing disappointment. In the clip, he first lamented not being given a spoon to enjoy the meal. But after taking a bite, his facial expression shifted dramatically.

Without uttering a word, he stepped out of the video frame, leaving viewers convinced the taste had fallen short of his expectations.

The reaction quickly set social media abuzz, sparking a mix of humorous takes and divided opinions. While some users teased that the pressure of cooking on such a massive scale could affect taste, others insisted that the effort alone deserved praise regardless of flavour.

richard.f.gaye noted: “Is not about the taste but about the hours she spend on cooking.”

Hilda Baci explains why she cooked 200 bags of jollof rice instead of 250

Nigerian celebrity chef and Guinness World Record holder, Hilda Baci, has explained why she reduced her world record attempt from 250 to 200 bags of rice in her bid to set a new record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style Jollof rice.

The event, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, attracted food enthusiasts, celebrities, and dignitaries, including Nollywood star Funke Akindele, dancer Kaffy, and Ogun State’s First Lady, Bamidele Abiodun.

Technical Constraints Led to Reduction in Rice

Hilda Baci explained that the decision to reduce the number of rice bags was based on technical limitations with the measuring crane and scale, which could only accommodate a total weight of 20,000 kilogrammes, including the custom-made pot.

“The goal was that by the time I was done making 5,000 kilogrammes, I was hoping to achieve about 17,000 to 18,000 kilogrammes. Right now, if I include the weight of the pot, that’s about 20,000. It’s safer for me to go below 20,000 kilogrammes so that my scale can carry it all at the same time,” she said.

Despite the reduction, the 200 bags still amounted to 4,000 kilogrammes of rice, enough to feed 20,000 people.

“This 4,000 kilogrammes of rice is 200 bags of rice and it will still feed 20,000 people, so we’re still up there,” Baci added.

Hilda Baci described the project as the most ambitious of her career, requiring almost a year of planning.

From fabricating the custom pots to coordinating the cooking process, the feat took nine months of preparation and nearly nine hours to complete.

“Honestly, Gino and I figuring this whole thing out was hectic. Then it took us about nine months to plan this event and it took us almost nine hours to make the entire meal,” she said.

She emphasized that the initiative was initially conceived not as a Guinness World Record attempt, but as a culinary experience for Nigerians, aimed at bringing people together and feeding as many as possible.

“I mean, have you looked around? There’s a lot of you. Some of you came with your cooler, so we need to make sure everybody’s fed. We’re feeding the nation,” Baci said.

Guinness World Records Sends Support

The London-based Guinness World Records acknowledged the event online, posting a video and message on X (formerly Twitter):

“What’s cookin’? Best of luck to @hildabacicooks who’s attempting a new record for the largest serving of Nigerian style jollof rice today.”

The recognition comes just two years after Hilda Baci’s 2023 cook-a-thon, which earned her global fame and inspired many young Nigerians to explore careers in the culinary industry.
