I’m Not Competitive With My Music – Tems Speaks

Temilade Openiyi, the famous Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, who is popularly known as Tems, has said that her only competition in music is herself.

According to her, nobody can compete with her musically.

The Oscar-nominated diva spoke in a recent interview with Hot 97 FM, New York.

She said, “I’m competitive within myself but I’m not competitive with other artists. Nobody can compete with me.

“I’m original. I have had children. But also, I’m just all about being true to myself. My music is for people that relate to it. So my music is coming from me. And my music is my outlet.

“I started making music because I didn’t have friends. I heard something to say and I didn’t have anyone to say it to. So, I would just sing it. I will write it in a song and record it on my phone. I was doing that for years.

“So, music is my outlet. Whether anybody listens to it or not, I’ve to release it. Whether it does or not, it’s none of my business. But I need to release it. And it’s for the people that can connect with it and are going through the same thing.”

Tems added that she had never imagined all the accolades she has received so far, stressing that she just wanted to sing.

Tinubu Might Use His School Certificate To Run For Second Term – Ex-Presidential Candidate

Dan Nwanyanwu has speculated that President Bola Tinubu may not contest with his controversial Chicago State University certificate in the next presidential election.
Nwanyanwu, the presidential candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in the February 25th, 2023 election stated this on Thursday.
There has been controversy around the Chicago State University (CSU) of the President, which the opposition party alleged was forged.
The Supreme Court, however, threw away the evidence during the ruling, claiming that the petition was filed by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) outside the timeframe of the law.
Nwanyanwu speaking on the widely delibrated issue in the country, in an interview on AIT said Tinubu might consider using his school certificate to contest for a second term.
The presidential candidate said, “Well if President Tinubu will be contesting another election, that will be a different page.

“It has nothing to do with this. Maybe at that time, in order to avoid controversies, I had aspirants who came to me; some said they were lawyers, some said they were this, they answered doctors, but when I was filing their papers, they said put school certificate.

“I said, But you’re a lawyer. He said, Chairman, leave that one. So maybe if President Tinubu is going to run for a second term, he may elect (decide) to say, Okay, to avoid controversies, put my school certificate.

“Even without the school certificate, you can run for president of Nigeria. So all you need to do is let INEC be convinced that you can read and write. I mean, what is this much ado about nothing?”

BREAKING: Drama As EFCC Arrests Ex-CBN Governor, Emefiele Immediately After His Release By DSS

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, briefly regained his freedom on Thursday night after he was released by the Department of State Services (DSS).

However, according to SaharaReporters, it was learnt that Emefiele who had been in DSS custody since June 9, was picked up immediately by the anti-corruption agency Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“Emefiele regained his freedom last night but he was immediately picked up by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,” a top security source told SaharaReporters on Thursday.

It was learnt that the Presidency directed the EFCC to take over the case.

The DSS arrested Emefiele in June, on the same day President Bola Tinubu, suspended him from office with immediate effect.

SaharaReporters had reported that Emefiele was suspended “sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”

A release by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information, for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has also said, “Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.”

SaharaReporters in February reported how the DSS attempted to arrest Emefiele when Muhammadu Buhari was Nigeria’s president, but the then-Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor, shielded him by providing soldiers to guard his residence and office.

The DSS had said it intensified its investigations in order to arrest and prosecute Emefiele, on allegations of terrorism financing and fraud.

SaharaReporters had also reported that Emefiele was set to be released from detention by the DSS after entering into plea bargaining with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

SaharaReporters had gathered that the non-prosecution plea bargain for Emefiele was premised upon the former governor’s willingness to return N50 billion which he had corruptly amassed.

Emefiele and his associates were set for arraignment on N6.9 billion procurement fraud at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in August but the arraignment was stalled.

Sources had told SaharaReporters that Emefiele’s arraignment was stalled because the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) was awaiting Tinubu’s approval for it after signing the non-prosecution plea bargain. President Tinubu was out of the country at the time.

Emefiele faced 20 counts of conspiracy and procurement fraud levelled against him by the Nigerian government.

“The exclusive deal has been finalised awaiting Tinubu’s order. Tinubu is expected back in Nigeria this weekend after a medical visit to France. The DSS traced N72 billion to a series of accounts which Emefiele had planned to use for his presidential run. Also, $70 million he hid with a couple who specialised in helping him to do round-tripping was discovered,” a top source had revealed to SaharaReporters.

However, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice, Modupe Ogundoro, denied the existence of any non-prosecution plea bargain involving Emefiele.

Ogundoro said though the legal team representing Emefiele had expressed its intention in court at the last hearing to initiate a plea bargain arrangement, no such agreement existed between the office of the AGF and the former CBN governor.

On Wednesday, the detained former Chairman of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, was also released by the DSS.

Bawa was released 134 days after he was detained by the secret police without trial.

Bawa was arrested and detained by the DSS on June 14, 2023, following an invite.

The invite followed allegations of abuse of office shortly after he was suspended by President Tinubu.

SaharaReporters reported earlier on Wednesday Bawa had sued the DSS, also known as the State Security Service (SSS), for his continued incarceration without trial.

Bawa in the suit filed at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court for the Enforcement of Fundamental Rights, brought by one Barrister Chinedu Oburu of Edu Oburu & Co. on his behalf, sought an order of the court to declare his detention without trial as illegal and to direct his immediate release.

The suit marked FHC/CS/2108/23 between Abdulrasheed Bawa as Applicant and SSS (DSS) as Respondent was brought Pursuant to Order 11 Rules 1, 2 and 3 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure Rules 2009, Sections 35(1)(4)(a), (5)(a)(b), 41(1), 46 of the 1999 Constitution as amended and under the inherent jurisdiction of the honourable court.

In the suit filed on October 20, 2023, the former EFCC chairman sought the following orders:

“A Declaration that the continued detention of the Applicant from June 14, 2023 till date without Arraignment or Criminal prosecution is a fragrant abuse and violation of his fundamental rights to freedom, liberty and personal dignity.

“An Order directing the Respondent to immediately release the Applicant from custody.

“And for further or other Orders as the Court may deem fit to make in the circumstances.”

Naira Hits New Low, Depreciates To N1,315/$ At Parallel Market

On Thursday, the naira, depreciated further yet again to N1,315 per dollar at the parallel section of the foreign exchange (FX) market.

The figure represents a depreciation of N90 or 7.35 percent compared to the N1225 it traded on Monday.

Bureau De Change operators (BDCs), in Lagos, put the buying price of the dollar at N1300 and the selling price at N1315 — resulting in a profit margin of N15.

“The dollar scarcity is still a problem,” a trader identified as Aliyu, told TheCable.

At the official market, the local currency appreciated by 5.51 percent, from N847.77/$ on Tuesday, to close at N801.10/$ on Wednesday.

This is according to data from FMDQ Securities Exchange — a platform that oversees official FX trading in Nigeria.

A total of $100.18 million was traded at the investors’ and exporters’ window (I&E) window — Nigeria’s official trading market.

Following the floating of the naira, the foreign exchange market has witnessed high levels of volatility — with the gap between the official and parallel markets further widening.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) lifted the ban on 43 items restricted from accessing forex to boost liquidity in the foreign exchange market.

CBN also said it will intervene “from time to time” to support the naira.

On Tuesday, the house of representatives summoned Yemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), over the decision to lift the forex ban on the 43 items.

To ease liquidity in the FX market, Wale Edun, minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, said Nigeria expects $10 billion in foreign currency inflows in the next few weeks.

Supreme Court Verdict: Retire From Politics And Allow Youngsters Like Peter Obi Take Over – HURIWA To Atiku

The presidential candidate of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February election, Atiku Abubakar has been urged retire from politics following his loss at the Supreme Court.
The call was made by Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA).
HURIWA urged Atiku to allow youngsters like his counterpart in the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi and others to wrestle power from the ruling party.
The advocacy group disclosed this in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko.
Onwubiko advised Atiku to shun politics and become a statesman and campaign for proper electoral reforms.
Speaking further, the group urged the opposition to advocate that the powers of appointment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman and electoral officers be removed from the president.
He said, “We advise Atiku Abubakar to quit politics and become a statesman and allow youngsters like Peter Obi and few other good people to refocus and re-energise opposition party to wrestle power if the laws are made to remove the powers of appointment of INEC Chairman and electoral officials by the President.

“HURIWA expects Atiku Abubakar to be a statesman and campaign for proper electoral reforms so political cases are decided before any levels of government are sworn in after the election”.

APC Congratulates Tinubu, Hails Supreme Court Judgement (Full Text)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed the Supreme Court for affirming the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The election was affirmed yesterday.
Recall that Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), had earlier approached the court to challenge an earlier verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, which confirmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25th election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
However, the apex court, in a ruling presided over by Justice John Okoro on Thursday, dismissed the petitions of the aggrieved presidential candidates and upheld the lower court’s verdict, describing their appeal as lacking in merit.

Reacting, APC, in a statement signed and issued on Thursday evening by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, commended the Supreme Court judgement, describing it as a landmark victory for the party, Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shettima.
The statement titled ‘APC LAUDS SUPREME COURT JUDGEMENT – CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT TINUBU ON EPOCHAL
VICTORY’ reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) applauds the judgement of the Supreme Court affirming Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the validly elected President of Nigeria.

“Dismissing the appeals of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) as lacking merit, the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Court that found in favour of the President.

“This epochal judgement underscores the independence and vibrancy of the Nigerian judiciary as an indispensable feature of our democracy.

“It is our hope that this judgment will put to rest all lingering misgivings about the 2023 presidential election so that we may all now concentrate on working collaboratively across party lines on behalf of our people.

“We heartily congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and the Nigerian people on this important landmark victory for our democracy.”

Supreme Court Verdict: It’s Time To Rally Behind Tinubu – Buratai

A former Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Tukur Buratai, has called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu to actualise his Renewed Hope agenda.

Buratai made the call in a statement on Friday in Abuja in reaction to the Supreme Court verdict that affirmed the victory of Tinubu as duly elected president during the Feb. 25 Presidential Election.

He said the apex court had, in a significant development, rendered its verdict in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu, thereby dismissing the claims put forth by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party.

According to him, the ruling clearly indicates that the court found merit in the arguments presented by the APC and President Tinubu.

“The decision holds significant implications for the political landscape, potentially shaping future policies and governance under President Tinubu’s leadership.

“I am urging all Nigerians, particularly politicians, to graciously accept the judgment of the Supreme Court and extend their support to President Tinubu.

“It is crucial for the stability and progress of the nation that we unite behind our elected leader.
