How DSS Nabbed Suspect Over Ass@ssination Attempt On Peter Obi in Benin

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested 26-year-old teacher Udeme for his alleged involvement in threats and the February 24 shooting incident targeting former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and other opposition figures in Benin City, Edo State.

The move marks the first solid breakthrough since the tense shooting scare that followed Obi’s visit to Benin, an episode that has continued to stir political debate as the country edges towards the 2027 election season.

Confirming the development on Monday, a top security source told our correspondent, “Yes, it is true.”

According to Vanguard, it was reliably gathered that DSS operatives swung into action shortly after Stephen allegedly posted threatening messages on his X handle, where he claimed responsibility for the attack and issued fresh threats.

In one of the posts cited by investigators, the suspect wrote: “We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he (Obi) survived this one.

“I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State. Na my men go handle that one and dem no dey miss target. Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die.”

Sources said forensic analysis helped track the suspect, who was later arrested in a covert operation. He remains in DSS custody and is expected to be charged in court.

A top source disclosed: “I strongly believe that the outcome of the agency’s forensic investigations implicated the suspect.

“You know that, as a responsible security organisation saddled with the task of counter-espionage, VIP protection, among other asset protection duties, the DSS is always alive to its responsibility of investigating credible intelligence, irrespective of tribe or religion.

“They swiftly deployed operatives and the man who threatened Peter Obi was nabbed and is in custody.”

The February 24 incident occurred shortly after Obi, former Edo State governor and ex-APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, attended a political meeting in Benin.

Armed men were reported to have opened fire near Oyegun’s GRA residence after trailing the convoy from the ADC secretariat on Ogbelaka Street.

The attackers riddled the gate, vehicles and parts of the compound before fleeing when security personnel responded. No casualties were recorded.

Obi’s allies and leaders of the Obidient Movement described the episode as a premeditated assassination attempt and criticised security lapses, while the Edo State Government rejected the claim and dismissed suggestions of official involvement as politically motivated.

The Police earlier confirmed receiving distress calls and reinforcing security in the area, noting at the time that investigations were ongoing.

With Stephen now in custody, security agencies say the probe remains open as efforts continue to determine whether others were involved in the Benin gunfire incident.

Dangote Refinery Raises Petrol Price To ₦875

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has raised its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) gantry price by ₦101, increasing the ex-depot rate from ₦774 to ₦875 per litre—a development that may prompt fresh fuel price adjustments across the country.

A senior official at the refinery confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Monday, attributing the upward review to recent volatility in global crude oil prices.

“Yes, the price has been reviewed. The new gantry price is now ₦875 per litre from ₦774. The review became necessary due to changes in global crude fundamentals and replacement costs,” the official said.

Checks on petroleumprice.ng showed that the revised gantry price had already been reflected, signalling a shift in downstream pricing benchmarks.

The price adjustment followed the refinery’s earlier decision to suspend petrol loading operations effective midnight on March 2, 2026, after international crude oil prices surged past the $80 per barrel mark overnight.

Industry data indicated that Premium Motor Spirit loading stopped exactly at midnight, halting product lifting and the issuance of Proforma Invoices – a clear sign that fresh transactions were temporarily paused.

However, the suspension applied strictly to petrol, as Automotive Gas Oil, popularly known as diesel, continued loading.

The development also prompted a ripple effect across the downstream sector, with several private depot owners reportedly suspending petrol sales during the trading day.

“Several depot owners suspended PMS sales because of the crude rally. The market is already factoring in risk premiums. Nobody wants to sell below replacement cost,” a downstream operator said.

Market watchers say such coordinated pauses often precede price realignments, as operators adjust to global crude movements and projected replacement costs.

The current volatility in the oil market has been linked to heightened geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, raising fears of supply disruptions — particularly around the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Energy analysts warn that sustained hostilities in the Middle East could disrupt global supply chains, push up freight and insurance premiums, and increase import and refining costs – even as Nigeria ramps up local refining capacity.

Five energy experts, in separate interviews with The PUNCH, cautioned that petrol and diesel prices in Nigeria could rise further if crude oil climbs beyond $90 per barrel.

With the gantry price now at ₦875 per litre, marketers are expected to adjust pump prices accordingly in the coming days, potentially pushing retail prices closer to the ₦1,000 mark in some locations.

Why I Stopped Going To Church – Nigerian Streamer, Carter Efe Opens Up (Video)

Popular streamer Caterefe has revealed that skit maker Sidney Talker influenced his decision to stop attending church.

Appearing in a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Caterefe explained that he used to be a consistent churchgoer until Sidney, whom he was looking up to as a dedicated Christian gave him some advice that contradicted his expectation from a seemingly dedicated Christian.

The streamer revealed that Sidney advised him to quit streaming and also discharge his streaming partner Kolu with just a million naira.

He explained that Sidney’s advice comes off to him as malicious and it affected how he views Christians and churchgoers.

“I used to go to church but I stopped because I noticed that a lot of churchgoers are very malicious. For example, Sidney Talker goes to church consistently yet he advised me to quit streaming. I see that as malicious advice.

“He has even advised me before to discharge Kolu with 1 million naira but I refused. That was when I decided to make Kolu my best friend. He said that I should discharge Kolu because his former boss Portable has juju and could attack me.

“I wonder why Sidney Talker is afraid of juju despite his consistency in church. I was surprised by his advice because I was beginning to gain traction and then suddenly he advised me to stop. What reason would you have to tell me to calm down? It seemed malicious to me,” he expressed.

Carter Efe also shared that before he started streaming, he was depressed for months because he felt pressured as skit making was fading out of trend.

He explained that he recovered from depression after he began his streaming.
