2026 WCQ: Super Eagles World Cup Hopes Would Have Been Dead Without Victor Osimhen – Mikel Obi

Former Nigerian international Mikel Obi has asserted that without star striker Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles’ chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup playoffs would be “nonexistent.”

Speaking on the Obi One podcast, Mikel emphasized Osimhen’s crucial role in reviving Nigeria’s World Cup bid. This sentiment follows the decisive final Group C match against Benin, where the Galatasaray star scored a hat-trick in a commanding 4-0 victory, which ultimately sealed the playoff berth for the Super Eagles.

Mikel argued that even against a lesser opponent, the striker’s performance under intense pressure was remarkable.

“If we didn’t win that game, we wouldn’t be talking about trying to qualify for the World Cup. Victor Osimhen has singlehandedly kept us alive. One of the biggest games, he’s come out and scored a hat-trick.”

Mikel underscored Osimhen’s importance by pointing to the team’s record in his absence. He noted that the Super Eagles failed to secure a single win in the matches Osimhen missed, instead recording four draws and one loss. This stark comparison highlights the striker’s profound influence on the team’s results.

Mikel praised the intangible qualities that Osimhen brings to the field: “You can see the intensity, passion, aggressiveness he shows. When the pressure is on, the big boys step up, and that’s exactly what he has done. He’s the big boy in that team right now, and we all needed him.”

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen continued his blistering form with a standout performance on Wednesday night, scoring twice as Galatasaray cruised to a 3-1 win over Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigerian star, who had earlier during the day been shortlisted for the 2025 CAF Player of the Year award, produced a stunning display that proved his growing reputation as a big-game performer under manager Okan Buruk.

2026 WCQ: I Never Fake Care – Nwabali Tells Osimhen Amid Clash With Bassey, Ndidi

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has shared a cryptic Instagram post believed to be directed at striker Victor Osimhen.

It comes just days after a tense on-field clash involving Nwabali, Wilfred Ndidi and Calvin Bassey during Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Benin Republic in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Osimhen scored a hat-trick as the three-time African champions made it into the continental playoffs.

However, there were criticisms aimed at Nwabali and some of his antics, especially after his mistakes in a 2-1 win over Lesotho last week.

While a lot of observers called for Nwabali to be dropped, head coach Eric Chelle kept with him.

But the Chippa United stopper was involved in flash incidents with his own team-mates.

First, he pushed Ndidi who tried to calm him down after he confronted a Benin player.

At half time, as the players trudged off the pitch, he was seen arguing with Bassey.

He has now added a layer to the incident by writing on his Instagram story: “I never fake care anyone.

“What I give, I give from my heart. Choose a good heart.

“People change so fast… I believe you VO9.”

Osimhen fires hat-trick as Nigeria crush Benin 4-0 to reach World Cup Playoffs

Nigeria cruised to a dominant 4–0 victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday night at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, wrapping up their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in emphatic fashion.

Despite the one-sided win, the Super Eagles narrowly missed out on automatic qualification but secured a playoff berth, keeping their World Cup dream alive regardless of results elsewhere in Group C.

Osimhen steals the show with clinical hat-trick

Victor Osimhen was at his ruthless best, opening the scoring in the 3rd minute after connecting with Samuel Chukwueze’s cross.

The Napoli forward doubled the lead in the 37th minute with a towering header, again assisted by Chukwueze, before completing his hat-trick six minutes into the second half from a precise Moses Simon delivery.

Frank Onyeka capped off the dominant display in stoppage time, firing into the top corner from another Simon assist to seal the 4–0 rout.

Super Eagles dominate in style

Nigeria controlled the contest from start to finish, combining sharp attacking play with disciplined defending.

Benin struggled to cope with the Super Eagles’ high press and tempo, resorting to a series of fouls that earned them multiple yellow cards.

Coach Eric Chelle’s well-timed substitutions, introducing Tolu Arokodare and Onyeka helped maintain intensity and focus until the final whistle.

Focus shifts to playoffs

The result saw Nigeria finish second in Group C with 17 points, just one behind South Africa, who topped the table on 18.

While they fell short of direct qualification, the Super Eagles’ convincing win ensures momentum heading into the CAF playoff round, where they will fight for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Champions League: What Van Dijk Said About Osimhen After Galatasaray Defeated Liverpool 1-0

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has praised Victor Osimhen following the Reds’ UEFA Champions League loss to Galatasaray on Tuesday.

Van Dijk said the Nigerian international created some chances for himself but couldn’t convert them.

The Dutch defender, however, noted that Osimhen did convert his penalty against Liverpool.

Recall that a first-half penalty gave Galatasaray the victory against the Premier League champions at Rams Park.

Speaking after the game, Van Dijk also admitted that Arne Slot’s side made mistakes against the hosts.

“They won a penalty and a few chances because of our mistakes. It was a bit of a messy game,”
Van Dijk was quoted by Habersarikirmizi as saying after the game.

“After a terrible performance at the weekend, we are facing a hard defeat to accept.

“Osimhen converted the penalty. He also had some chances due to our mistakes.

“He could not capitalize on them, but he did manage to create some for himself. Galatasaray’s attacking players are successful.”

UCL: Osimhen strike sinks Liverpool in Istanbul

Victor Osimhen was the difference on a thunderous Champions League night as Galatasaray handed Liverpool their second successive defeat.

The Nigerian forward struck from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after Dominik Szoboszlai fouled Baris Alper Yilmaz, punishing the Premier League champions in front of a deafening RAMS Park crowd.

The goal came seconds after Davinson Sanchez had denied Cody Gakpo with a clearance off the line, swinging the tide firmly Galatasaray’s way.

Slot’s gamble backfires as Reds toil

Liverpool coach Arne Slot chose to start without Mohamed Salah, hoping to spark a reaction after the weekend loss at Crystal Palace.

But the decision misfired, with Salah and Alexander Isak only introduced after the hour mark to little effect.

Alisson kept Liverpool in the contest with several big saves, including one from Osimhen, before limping off injured.

A late chance to level disappeared when Ibrahima Konate’s penalty claim was overturned by VAR, silencing brief celebrations.

Reds exposed under pressure

Liverpool once again looked fragile at the back, their expensively assembled attack failing to leave a mark.

Florian Wirtz was anonymous, while Hugo Ekitike added to the problems by departing injured.

The result leaves Slot’s side facing early questions in Europe despite sitting top of the Premier League.

They face Chelsea next in the Premier League this weekend.

Victor Osimhen Is Still In Pain — Galatasaray Manager Reveals

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has disclosed that Victor Osimhen is still struggling with pain from an injury picked up during international duty with Nigeria but is expected to make a return to action soon.

The 26-year-old striker picked up the knock last week while representing the Super Eagles and immediately returned to Turkey for treatment. Galatasaray confirmed his situation in a statement on their official website.

Osimhen was unavailable for the Yellow and Reds’ 2-0 victory over Eyupspor on Saturday, but Buruk remains optimistic about his recovery ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League opener.

“Osimhen’s condition will be determined within a few days. We’re hopeful he’ll play. We think he will, but of course, he’s in pain,” Buruk told the club’s official media.

Galatasaray face Eintracht Frankfurt away on Thursday in their first Champions League group stage match of the season, and Buruk will be eager to have his star forward available.

Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray from Napoli this summer in a high-profile transfer, is seen as central to the Turkish champions’ European ambitions. He arrived after a successful spell in Serie A, where he fired Napoli to their first Scudetto in 33 years in 2023 and won the African Footballer of the Year award.

His fitness will be closely monitored in the coming days, with Nigerian fans also anxious about his availability ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers.
