Tinubu Calls for Stronger Child Inclusion as Nigeria Marks Children’s Day in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has called on governments at all levels, families, and communities to go beyond symbolic gestures and build a culture where children are truly listened to and actively involved in decisions that affect their lives.

He made this declaration at the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja.

Delivering his message through the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the President told pupils and students from primary and secondary schools in attendance that their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations are central to Nigeria’s future.

He described the assurance that “your opinion matters, your ideas matter, your well-being matters” not as mere rhetoric, but as a guiding principle for the country’s democratic renewal.

The event was held under the theme “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” and the President used the occasion to stress that inclusion must serve as the moral bedrock of national development.

He emphasised that no child whether from a remote community or an urban centre, physically challenged or socially vulnerable should feel overlooked or left behind.

Every child, he said, deserves equal access to quality education, healthcare, protection, nutrition, digital opportunities, and a sense of belonging.

Linking these ideals to concrete policy action, President Tinubu pointed to several programmes under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including the Renewed Hope Social Impact Intervention–774, Nutrition 774, ANRiN 2.0, and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), as evidence that children’s needs are being translated into actual budgetary commitments.

He also highlighted investments in STEM education and the Ministry of Education’s NEDI platform as tools to equip children with digital skills for the future.

On child protection, the President noted that while the Child Rights Act has been domesticated across the country, the federal government is currently reviewing both the Act and the National Child Policy to ensure they remain effective and up to date.

He added that through the 2025 Costed Action Plan, the government is backing its commitments with financial resources to tackle violence against children, child marriage, and female genital mutilation.

He further encouraged state governments to strengthen the Nigerian Children’s Parliament, describing it as a vital platform for nurturing leadership, civic engagement, and democratic participation among young Nigerians.

The President also urged children to steer clear of violence, cultism, substance abuse, cybercrime, and bullying, warning that such vices rob young people of their futures.

He encouraged them instead to embrace discipline, hard work, honesty, and patriotism, and to use technology responsibly.

In her welcome address, the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, represented by the Acting Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, Hajiya Mukhtar, said the FCT

Administration with support from UNICEF Nigeria is reinforcing community-based child protection structures, training social workers, and tightening oversight of homes and orphanages to safeguard children’s dignity and safety.

One of the most moving moments of the event came from Jessica Nufi, a student of Government Secondary School, Garki, Abuja, who delivered a passionate appeal to the government on behalf of children across the country.

She called for free and accessible quality education, stronger protection from insecurity and violence, and an end to early marriage, cultism, drug abuse, and environmental dangers.

Jessica painted a sobering picture of the realities many Nigerian children face daily, noting that poverty keeps millions out of school, while insecurity, early marriage, and social pressures continue to rob many children especially girls of their futures and sense of safety.

She appealed to governments at all levels to make education universally accessible, strengthen healthcare for children with special needs, and create safe environments in schools and public spaces

She also called for a Nigeria free from drugs, cultism, and environmental hazards one that the next generation could be proud to inherit.

Closing her speech with a pledge on behalf of Nigerian children, Jessica promised that if adults fulfilled their responsibilities, children would do their part by obeying their parents and teachers, studying hard, shunning vices, and becoming responsible leaders of tomorrow.

Her words were met with resounding applause from children, parents, and officials in attendance.

A former presidential candidate and an activist, Omoyele Sowore has said he will answer in court after being sued by the Department of State Services, DSS over a post he made calling President Bola Tinubu a criminal.
Recall that we had earlier reported that the DSS on Tuesday instituted a five-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against Sowore and social media platforms X, Meta (parent company of Facebook).
The charges, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2015, were instituted by the Federal Republic of Nigeria as complainant, with Sowore, X Inc., and Meta Inc. listed as defendants.
In his reaction, Sowore said he would be present whenever he is needed in court.
“The State Security Service, alias @OfficialDSSNG today filed a 5-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against ‘@X’ (formerly @Twitter), @facebook , and myself,” he wrote on X.
“They claimed that because I called @officialABAT a criminal, I have somehow committed a set of “novel” offences they invented and spread across five counts.

“It’s hard to believe there’s anyone sensible left in these offices that should be making Nigeria work. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow.”
Sowore had earlier revealed he was written by the security outfit who demanded of him to remove the post against the President and tender an unreserved apology.

You Have Been Reduced To A Misinformation Monster – Presidency Fires At Tunde Ednut

The Presidency has accused popular influencer Tunde Ednut of spreading false information about Nigeria’s security situation.

The Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, disagreed with a submission by Ednut that Nigeria is not safe.

The social media influencer had taken to his Instagram page to warn Nigerians against night movement, stating that the country is not safe. He added that claims by politicians that Nigeria is safe are nothing but lies.

However, reacting in a post via his 𝕏 account on Sunday, the presidential media aide accused Ednut of spreading fake news about the security situation in Nigeria.

Olusegun accused Ednut of posting a video from another country just to support his claim that Nigeria is not safe. The presidency cautioned that such acts are not patriotic but rather reek of desperation to get clicks and traffic to his social media page.

“Nigeria’s security apparatus is in no way close to perfection but the need to consistently chase clout while leveraging on the gullibility of an audience who rely on your page for information about the happenings around them has reduced Tunde Ednut to a misinformation monster that now needs to be checked.

“How desperate can one be to post a video from South Africa in a bid to prove to his audience that “Nigeria is not safe” when tomorrow, you will still tell the same audience that South Africa is safer than Nigeria?

“Acts like this are in no way close to the patriotism or good governance advocacy that you tend to promote, rather it reeks of desperation and need for clicks using negativity that quickly resonates with the majority of your audience,” the presidency submitted.

While noting that the fight against insecurity is an ongoing effort, the presidency highlighted some of the major achievements already recorded in the security sector, including the arrest of several high-profile terrorist leaders, the degradation of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following the arrest of Simon Ekpa, as well as improved security on the nation’s highway.

“While no one is saying Nigeria is Eldorado as far as insecurity is concerned, we must lay bare the facts here to let Nigerians know that we are better than where we were coming from.

“Hundreds of top bandit leaders have been eliminated over the past two years while thousands of their members have been sent to their creator via the improved coordination between the military forces as now headed by NSA Ribadu.

“The dangerous Abuja-Kaduna highway has become a safer road, and no major insecurity report has been made over the past few months.

“The IPOB menace in the Southeast still exists but has reduced significantly following the arrest of commander Simon Ekpa.

“Again, this is not to say all is well but we are not where we used to be and using videos from South Africa to justify your claims of insecurity suggests that you are short of the negative content you so much desire for Nigeria to appease your sponsors,” the presidency added.

It concluded by urging Ednut and others to cease from spreading false and inciting messages, all in a bid to chase social media clout.

“Tunde Ednut needs to do better, and the truth must be pointed to him accordingly. This is all shades of wrong!”
the statement concluded.
