Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, President Bola Tinubu is meeting with a delegation of Nigerian Muslim leaders (Ulama) led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, in Aso Rock, Abuja.
Recall that a group of Islamic leaders had recently offered to interface with the coup leaders in Niger Republic on behalf of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, and they got the approval from President Tinubu.
They were in Niger to interact with the junta’s head, General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
The Islamic clerics had advised against the use of military force by ECOWAS.
President Tinubu is the Chairman of the ECOWAS’ Authority of Heads of State and Government and it’s expected that the Islamic leaders will brief the President on the outcome of their interactions with the military junta as well as their colleagues in Niger Republic as regards the political crisis
The ECOWAS had taken steps to show its disapproval of the military take over of power in Niger by imposing a series of sanctions and an ultimatum, which the body threatened could lead to an armed response.
ECOWAS has insisted that the military junta should reinstate the democratically-elected President.
The Ulama are opposed to war with the Nigerien military, as threatened by ECOWAS.
They said that apart from the dire consequences of armed conflict, they were enjoined by their religious faith and the Quran to seek mediation first in cases like this before resorting to war.
The Director-General and CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Aliyu Abubakar Aziz, was on Tuesday ordered to commence a 90-day pre-retirement leave by President Bola Tinubu.
The directive takes effect on August 24, 2023, leading to Aziz’s eventual retirement from service on November 24, 2023.
This was contained in a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Ajure Ngelale.
Tinubu has also approved the appointment of Bisoye Coker-Odusote as the acting Director-General and CEO of NIMC for a 90-day period.
His appointment takes effect on August 24, 2023, after which a full term of four years will begin as the substantive NIMC Director-General/CEO on November 24, 2023.
Furthermore, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub as the Director and CEO of the Directorate of Technical Aid Corps (DTAC).
This follows the recent expiration of the tenure of the former DTAC Director and CEO, Dr Pius Osunyikanmi.
This appointment takes immediate effect.
President Bola Tinubu will hold his first Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, on Wednesday, August 23.
This would be his first since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.
The inaugural FEC will hold after the swearing-in of new ministers into his cabinet on Monday.
It was gathered that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume and the cabinet office are working on the focus of the first FEC which will be more like induction, where President Tinubu is expected to share his priorities under Renewed Hope Agenda with the new cabinet.
The FEC meeting may also approve Ministerial retreat, which is expected to hold immediately after, Western Post reports.
Recall that the SGF had in a statement on Wednesday confirmed that the president would on Monday swear in the 45 minister-designates who were confirmed by the Senate after undergoing screening on August 21.
President Bola Tinubu has reacted after the Super Falcons of Nigeria were knocked out of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
He commended them for their bravery and performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
TORI earlier reported that European champions England defeated nine-time Africa Cup of Nation winners Nigeria on penalties for a place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing tournament.
The Super Falcons held the European champions to a goalless draw for 120 minutes until the Nigerian team lost to the English side 4-2 on penalties.
Reacting in a tweet via his verified Twitter handle on Monday, President Tinubu commended the team for their effort despite crashing out of the Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian leader said the brilliant performance of the team did not go unnoticed despite the final outcome, adding that the players have made Nigeria proud on the global stage.
He wrote: “I must commend the effort by our Super Falcons @NGSuper_Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Your brilliant performance did not go unnoticed despite the final outcome. You made Nigeria proud on the global stage!”
Shehu Sani, a former Nigerian lawmaker, has sent a message to President Bola Tinubu.
He urged Tinubu not to weaponise electricity supply against Niger Republic in handling the leadership crisis in the West African country.
According to Sani, the President should be careful not to be the new apprentice of French neo-Colonialism in the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, sub-region.
In a tweet on Sunday, the social critic is of the view that Nigeria shouldn’t be the vigilante of imperialism in West Africa.
He said that Nigeria should seize the moment and seek a new independent West Africa.
He wrote, “President Tinubu should not weaponise electricity supply to Niger Republic. Nigeria shouldn’t be the vigilante of imperialism in West Africa.
“The President should be careful not to be the new apprentice of French neo-Colonialism in our subregion.
“This is a moment we should seize for a new Independent West Africa; beginning with killing the CFA,Cedi and Naira and adopting a common West African Currency.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said that despite claims by the opposition parties that the 2023 presidential elections were not credible, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) won the polls.
The Nigerian leader stated this on Thursday while addressing the 12th National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling party at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
The President asserted that it is now time to deliver the promises of good governance to the Nigerian people stating that the 2023 election was the best election in Nigeria’s history.
Present at the NEC meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas; Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC governors, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) with a huge accusation.
He accused the APC of trying to compromise the judiciary.
Atiku and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) are challenging the declaration of Bola Tinubu, candidate of the APC, as the winner of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Part of the grounds for the challenge was Tinubu’s failure to secure at least 25% of votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
However, Tinubu, through his counsel, Wole Olanipekun, argued that the FCT is the 37th state for electoral purposes and any other interpretation would “lead to absurdity, chaos, anarchy and alteration of the very intention of the legislature.”
Atiku, in a statement signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe on Saturday, said the APC and agents of Tinubu have “ceaselessly chosen to stand in the way of justice by making “catastrophic threats to anarchy if justice is not served according to their whims.”
“The plot of the APC is simple: intimidate the judiciary, threaten judges with arrest so that they will bow to their will. This is a playbook from 2019, when they removed the CJN and then replaced him with Tanko Muhammad, who himself was later accused of corruption by his colleagues at the Supreme Court and resigned shamefully,” the statement reads in part.
Charles Oputa, the maverick Nigerian singer, who is also known as Charly Boy, has explained why he is still in Nigeria.
He said he is still in Nigeria despite his preferred presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi of the Labour Party not emerging president because he is “hopeful.”
Recall that before the 2023 presidential elections, Charly Boy had vowed to relocate from Nigeria if either Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, or Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, emerged president.
Tinubu was declared the winner of the February 25th presidential election and was subsequently sworn in as president on May 29th.
Months after Tinubu’s swearing-in, Charly Boy said he is still in the country because Peter Obi renewed his hope.
He made this known via his Twitter handle on Friday.
“I remember over 1yr ago, I bin talk say, if PDP or APC win election, I go just pack my tins commot Nigeria.
“Today am still staying put in Nigeria because I am hopeful in the face of all the Potopoto I see.
“Thank you, Peter Obi for renewing my HOPE. God bless you,” he wrote.
