Donald Trump’s Threat Sparks Massive Sell-Offs In Nigerian Stock Market As Investors Lose N2.8tn

The Nigerian stock market suffered a major decline over the past five trading days, with investors at the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) losing a staggering ₦2.8 trillion between November 3 and 7, 2025.

Equity market capitalisation fell sharply to N94.9 trillion, while the All-Share Index, ASI, declined by 2.99 per cent, dropping to 149,524.81 points from the previous week’s 154,126.46 points.

The market traded bearish throughout the week under review.

On Monday alone, investors shed N245.88 billion. The negative trend continued on Tuesday with a further loss of N611.96 billion. By Wednesday, the market posted its worst decline of the week, with investors losing N1.31 trillion in a single trading session — the largest drop recorded during the period.

The sell-offs persisted as the market dipped again by N347.75 billion on Thursday and closed the week weaker with an additional loss of N318.78 billion on Friday, pushing the total weekly loss to N2.8 trillion.

Meanwhile, market activity also slowed.

Investors traded 3.575 billion shares valued at N107.011 billion in 146,429 deals, compared to the previous week’s 7.479 billion shares worth N145.429 billion exchanged in 159,487 deals.

The financial services industry dominated the trading volume chart with 2.946 billion shares worth N65.904 billion across 62,817 deals. Fidelity Bank Plc, FCMB Group Plc, and Aso Savings & Loans Plc led trading by volume, accounting for 1.288 billion shares valued at N19.3 billion in 11,536 deals, representing 36.03 per cent and 18.08 per cent of the total market turnover in volume and value, respectively.

In price movement, 20 equities appreciated during the week—down from 29 in the previous week. Meanwhile, 75 equities declined, higher than the 70 recorded previously, while 51 remained unchanged.

NCR (Nigeria) Plc recorded the highest price gain at 20.94 per cent, followed by Eunisell Interlinked Plc with a 20.17 per cent increase and Union Dicon Salt Plc with a 9.93 per cent rise.

On the losers’ side, Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc led with a 28.21 per cent decline, followed by C & I Leasing Plc, which dipped by 20.16 per cent. Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc also fell by 18.99 per cent over the course of the week.

The latest performance underscores continued investor concerns over market volatility, macroeconomic uncertainty and profit-taking activities across multiple sectors.

This comes after President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over the alleged killing of Christians.

Trump thereafter threatened to take military action in Nigeria.

The development may have impacted investors’ confidence in Nigeria’s stock market in the week under review.

U.S. Reportedly Revoking Valid Visas of Nigerians

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reportedly begun revoking valid visas of Nigerian citizens, leaving professionals, entrepreneurs, frequent travellers, and families stranded.
This was revealed by former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Olufemi Soneye in an article titled “The Quiet Revocation: Why is the U.S. Silently Cancelling Nigerians’ Visas?”
He stated that several affected individuals have confirmed receiving official letters from the embassy in recent weeks, instructing them to submit their passports at the consulate in Lagos or Abuja. Upon submission, their visas were cancelled without explanation.
The cancellation notices, citing Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 41.122, vaguely stated that “new information became available after the visa was issued,” but provided no details, evidence, or avenues for appeal.
Among those impacted are a prominent journalist, the head of a federal government agency scheduled to deliver an international address, and an Abuja-based entrepreneur with a spotless travel record.
Others include professionals and frequent travellers who rely on visas for education, family reunions, medical treatment, and critical business engagements.
Some travellers only discovered the cancellations at airports and boarding gates, with a few briefly detained by immigration officials before being turned back. Several were forced to cancel trips, refund tickets, and explain to partners why they could no longer attend important meetings.
Despite the gravity of the situation, neither the U.S. Embassy nor Nigerian authorities have issued a public statement addressing the wave of cancellations, leaving affected citizens in limbo.
Those affected insist they have never overstayed visas, violated immigration rules, or raised security concerns. The sudden revocations have therefore sparked fears of a quiet but targeted tightening of U.S. visa policy against Nigerians.

Olasinmibo “Sinmi” Abosede, a Nigerian woman who had been declared missing, has been found deceased in Naperville, Illinois, United States.

Abosede, 36, had been missing since July 30, 2025. She was last seen about 9:20 a.m. as she walked away from her home in the 2100 block of Sudbury Street.

The body was found on Thursday afternoon, August 14, near a trailhead at the southwest corner of the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve at 83rd Street and Chandelle Drive, according to a joint news release from Naperville Police Department and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

Naperville police officers were called to the scene for a report of the discovery of a dead body, according to Naperville police.

Officers were led through a dense area of high grass to the body. The clothing on the body matched the clothing that Abosede had last been seen wearing, police said.

While we believe the individual to be Sinmi, the final confirmation will be made by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office,” Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said in a news release.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our sincere condolences to the Abosede family during this difficult time. Thank you to everyone in our community who assisted with this investigation and for your care and concern. We ask that everyone keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this difficult time.

“While the identity of the body found has yet to be confirmed, her cousin, Fehintola da-Silva, confirmed the sad development on X.

“My cousin, Sinmi, was found d3ad. This has been a blow to our family. To everyone who reposted, shared, and reached out during the search, thank you for your kindness. May her soul rest in peace,” she wrote.

St. Raphael Catholic Church also issued a statement about the finding, confirming her d3ath.

“Out parish family at St. Raphael Catholic Church has been praying diligently for the safe return of Olasinmibo “Sinmi” Abosede. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of her passing.

“We are deeply saddened, and out thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time. As a parash, we remain committed to lifting Sinmi and her loved ones in prayer in the days ahead. May our blessed Mother and St. Raphael escort Sinmi into Eternal Life.”

Police said foul play was not suspected.

Yul Edochie Urges Igbos To Leave Ghana, Invest In Southeast

Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie has issued an emotional appeal to Igbos living abroad, especially those in Ghana, urging them to return home and invest in the Southeast.

This comes in response to rising tensions in Ghana, where protests recently erupted, with some locals calling for the deportation of Nigerians amid allegations of increasing criminal activity.

In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, Edochie said the backlash should not be met with hostility, but seen as a spiritual sign to reconnect with their roots.

“Ndi Igbo, come back home and invest in Igbo land. If you’re facing rejection on foreign soil, it’s not a sign to fight. It’s a sign to return home,” he wrote.

He described the situation as a call from Igbo ancestors to rebuild the region, emphasising that a new era of unity and development is dawning in the Southeast.

Quoting a popular proverb, he concluded: “Ana amalu mma si na uno wee puo ilo,  meaning “beauty begins at home before it shines outside.”
