Fernandes, Mbeumo score as Man United win 10-man Tottenham

Manchester United continued their perfect start under Michael Carrick with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, extending the interim head coach’s record to four wins from four matches.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes ensured United capitalised on Tottenham being reduced to 10 men, while the result further lifted confidence around Carrick’s short-term tenure following Ruben Amorim’s departure.

United started with energy and control, moving the ball fluently in midfield and pressing Spurs high up the pitch. Tottenham initially settled into the contest, but their task became significantly harder after Cristian Romero was dismissed midway through the first half.

Romero dismissal turns the game

The decisive moment arrived in the 29th minute when Romero received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro.

The Argentine defender caught the Brazilian on the ankle while attempting to dribble out of pressure, leaving referee Michael Oliver with little hesitation.

The sending-off shifted the game in United’s favour. With the numerical advantage, Carrick’s side increased the tempo and began to pin Spurs back inside their own half.

United made the breakthrough in the 38th minute from a well-worked corner. Fernandes played a low delivery to Kobbie Mainoo, who intelligently flicked the ball into the path of Mbeumo. The winger kept his composure to stroke the ball home for his 10th goal of the season.

Fernandes caps dominant display

United remained on the front foot after the interval, although two further goals were ruled out for offside as Spurs attempted to limit the damage. Fernandes, operating with freedom across midfield, dictated play and repeatedly tested Tottenham’s defensive structure.

The Portuguese captain sealed the win nine minutes from time, finishing from close range after connecting with a Diogo Dalot cross to make it 2-0.

The goal underlined United’s control and removed any lingering doubt about the outcome.

Meanwhile, Tottenham struggled to mount a response with 10 men and offered little attacking threat in the closing stages.

EPL: Manchester United beat Manchester City as Carrick starts strong

Michael Carrick’s return to Manchester Unitedcontinued in fine fashion as the Red Devils claimed a 2-0 derby victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford to move into the Premier League top four.

Carrick had spoken pre-match about the “magic” still present at the club, and United delivered a performance to match the rhetoric, producing their most complete display of the season just days into his tenure.

Carrick impact felt immediately

United benefited from a near fully fit squad, bolstered by the timely returns of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad. The duo added sharpness and intensity to a high-pressing approach that unsettled City throughout.

Mbeumo marked his first appearance in a month by opening the scoring in the 65th minute, offering further relief that Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations exit ensured his availability.

It was United’s first home league win over City since January 2023 and a result that temporarily lifted them to fourth.

City falter as title hopes fade

For City, the defeat further dented hopes of reclaiming the title from Arsenal.

Despite the scoreline, they were fortunate not to concede more, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma repeatedly denying United before eventually being beaten.

Defensive lapses proved costly, particularly for the second goal in the 76th minute when Rico Lewis failed to track Patrick Dorgu, allowing the wing-back to ghost in and finish.

City’s attack offered little resistance, with Phil Foden withdrawn at half-time, Erling Haaland neutralised, and Antoine Semenyo kept quiet.

Old Trafford atmosphere and first-half control

The derby was played against a charged backdrop, with protests aimed at the club’s ownership and banners referencing City’s ongoing Premier League charges.

On the pitch, United dominated large spells of a goalless first half, forcing City into repeated errors under pressure.

Harry Maguire struck the crossbar early on, while Fernandes and Amad both had goals ruled out for offside.

City struggled to cope with United’s aggressive press, and the interval arrived with the visitors fortunate to be level.

Second-half breakthrough seals result

City’s issues deepened after the break, including an injury-enforced withdrawal for Haaland. United continued to press and eventually found reward through Mbeumo before Dorgu sealed the win.

“You can see it either way, in the end we will not lose too many minutes thinking about this, but we will give all our energy and focus on our squad and what we want to do right. We only have one game with Michael Carrick in charge to focus on and to analyze. Of course we have some individual behavior and some group behavior that we think we can see as patterns and want to prepare our team for it. On the other side it is always the best moment to play against Manchester United because we are up for the big challenges and we want to be out there to play on the highest level, to prove ourselves and to prove a point. We just came from a tough match and there’s the next one, this is where we are, where we love to be, and we get challenged on the highest level again on Sunday.
