Reactions Trail Nigerian Monarch’s Call For Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom

Last week, at a health summit for traditional and religious leaders held inside the Presidential Villa, a traditional ruler from Enugu State, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, confronted Bola Ahmed Tinubu, demanding that he either release the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, unconditionally or deport him to Kenya.

Igwe Agubuzu made the demand when he was given the opportunity to address the gathering.

The demand was widely viewed as courageous, especially when many political leaders, who were supposed to have led such campaigns, have all remained silent out of fear.

While Agubuzu was speaking about Kanu’s ordeal and the similarity of his case with that of the Yoruba self determination agitator, Sunday Igboho, President Tinubu, who never envisaged such demand coming at that point was seen laughing hysterically.

However, Igwe Agubuzu’s demand has continued to elicit commendation and applause from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.

Three Igbo advocacy groups based in the United States, including the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), Ambassadors for Self-Determination (ASD) and Rising Sun Foundation (RSF), in a statement, have thrown their weight behind the call and praised the Enugu monarch for telling President Tinubu what many have failed to tell him.

A statement jointly signed by Dr. Sylvester Onyia, AVID, Chief Evans Nwankwo, ASD and Dr. Maxwell Dede, said: “We unequivocally commend His Royal Majesty, Eze Agubuzu of Enugu for his unflinching courage in telling President Bola Tinubu what other Igbo traditional rulers have been too weak, too compromised or too cowardly to say: Release Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu immediately or return him to Kenya.

“Let it be known that Eze Agubuzu and Eze Chukwuemeka Eri are currently the only monarchs who have publicly understood the depth of the pain, injustice and anguish inflicted upon our people by Kanu’s illegal detention.

“While Fulani herder murderers are pampered, Yoruba agitators walk free and the Nigerian state continues to show contempt for Igbo humanity, the majority of Igbo kings and chiefs, including the Obi of Onitsha and Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, remain silent. Their silence is complicity; their inaction is betrayal.

“We ask plainly: What are the titles and crowns of these so-called leaders worth if they cannot stand for the lives, liberty and dignity of their own people? AlaIgbo cannot survive leaders who place personal comfort above collective justice.”

The groups called on all the Igbo traditional rulers to abandon cowardice and complicity, and speak with one voice, stressing that the time for half-measures, whispers and veiled statements was over.

“Step up boldly for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu or step aside and make room for leaders who will. History will not forgive those who chose silence while our people suffered injustice,”the statement added.

The groups commended Agubuzu’s courage, saying he demonstrated that moral authority, not fear of Abuja, is what preserves a people’s dignity.

Similarly, a lecturer at the Michael OKpara University, Umudike, Imo State, Prof. Leo Obinna, has described Igwe Agubuzor as a bold and courageous monarch, whose thought aligns with the majority of the Igbo.

“We want President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. Igwe Agubuzor is a bold and courageous monarch. All he told the president is our thought.

“Not many leaders will speak the way he did. I have my kudos for him, he has my respect.

“Sunday Igboho committed the same acclaimed offence as Kanu. Igboho has been pardoned and we hear that the Ooni of Ife is trying to confer on him one of the highest honour in Yoruba land but our own Kanu is languishing in prison,” he said. He said if it were to be in other climes where justice and fairness rule supreme, Kanu would have been released.

Welcoming the call by Igwe Agubuzor for Kanu’s, a lawyer, Godwin Chinonye, emphasised that the IPOB leader did not do anything.

“The traditional ruler was very correct in what he said. In other regions, people like Kanu were released. Indeed, I am commending the traditional for what he said,” he noted.

An Umuahia-based lawyer, Okezie Ohajuruka, expressed his love with Agubuzu’s statement, describing the monarch as “the type of leader the Igbo need at this point in time; people who will speak truth to power.”

Former President General of Kanu’s community, Afaraukwu, Umuahia, Ikechukwu Ndubueze, also commended Igwe Agubuzu for telling the President the truth to his face.

He said the IPOB leader should have long been released if he were from another tribe and called on other Igbo leaders to speak out to get their son released.

“I don’t think if Kanu were to be a Yoruba or Fulani man, he would still be in prison. But because he is an Igbo man, they would want him to die in prison,” he said.

Nigerian Security Agents Are Impersonating Nnamdi Kanu On Social Media – Family Raises Alarm

The family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has sounded the alarm over what it claims is the impersonation of the pro-Biafra activist on social media by agents of the Nigerian government.

A statement released on Thursday by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family, said several accounts have been opened in Nnamdi Kanu’s name especially on Facebook and Instagram, seeking engagement with members of the public.

The family warned that the fake accounts are being used to spread disinformation to damage the reputation of Kanu and IPOB, and also target his supporters for possible victimization.

Stressing that Kanu does not have any social media account since his incarceration, the statement read, “The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), hereby issues this urgent public safety warning to the general public.

“It has come to our attention that fraudulent social media accounts, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, are impersonating Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. These fake pages — often using official-looking logos, claiming locations such as Nairobi or Sokoto, and posting misleading updates — are not associated with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB, or the Kanu family in any way.

“Since his illegal rendition and detention in June 2021, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has had no active or verified online presence on any social media platform. He does not operate Facebook pages, Instagram accounts, or any other profiles posting personal messages, location updates, or soliciting engagement.

“These impostor pages are part of a sustained deceptive operation, believed to be orchestrated by Nigerian security agencies and their collaborators. Their objectives include: harvesting your personal information, contacts, and data from unsuspecting followers and likers.

“Spreading disinformation to damage the reputation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB. Provoking or monitoring genuine supporters for potential harassment, surveillance, and arrest.”

Warning against any interaction with the said social media accounts, the statement added, “We strongly advise the public as follows: Do not follow, like, comment on, share, or engage with any such fake pages.

“Immediately unlike and unfollow any suspicious account claiming to represent Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Report these fraudulent pages to the platforms as impersonation/scam accounts. Rely solely on verified IPOB channels, primarily through official handles and trusted media affiliates such as Radio Biafra.”

According to the family, anyone who choses to interact with the fake pages does so at their own risk.

“Exposure of personal details could lead to severe consequences in the current climate of repression against the Biafran struggle.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains committed to the peaceful, non-violent pursuit of self-determination for Biafrans. We will continue to expose these dirty tactics and call for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,”the statement added.

Nnamdi Kanu Suffers First Setback In Suit Seeking His Transfer From Sokoto Prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected Nnamdi Kanu’s request to be transferred from Sokoto prison to either Kuje Prison in the FCT or Keffi Prison in Nasarawa State.

Kanu had filed an ex-parte application through the Legal Aid Council, praying the court to approve his request without hearing from the Federal Government.

He sought an order compelling the Federal Government and/or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) “to forthwith transfer him from the Sokoto Correctional Facility to a custodial facility within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court.”

Alternatively, Kanu sought an order transferring him to the court’s “immediate environs, such as the Suleja or the Keffi Custodial Centre, for the purpose of enabling the applicant to effectively prosecute his constitutionally guaranteed right of appeal.”

However, on Monday, the ex-parte application was turned down by Justice James Omotosho in the interest of justice.

The judge ordered the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to convert his ex-parte application to a motion on notice and serve same on all parties to allow them to be heard.

He subsequently fixed January 27, 2026, for hearing of the motion on notice.

Justice Omotosho had, last week, declined to give audience to Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel, who announced his appearance on behalf of the IPOB leader despite not being a lawyer.

Nnamdi Kanu Has Turned Sokoto Prison To Mecca, He Is Now A Celebrity – Sowore Taunts FG

Omoyele Sowore, the renowned activist and SaharaReporters publisher, has stated that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has become a celebrity within the Sokoto Custodial Centre.

Sowore spoke to journalists at the Federal High Court, Abuja, where he insisted that the Federal Government would eventually realise it made a historic blunder by securing a life sentence against the separatist agitator.

The former presidential candidate said Kanu’s influence inside the detention facility had grown significantly since his relocation to Sokoto.

According to him: “Nnamdi Kanu is already a celebrity in prison. They said he has already become the president of the prison, but I doubt, it must have been conferred on him just by respect.”

He added that attempts by authorities to humiliate the IPOB leader had backfired: “When they were taking him to Sokoto, they thought that they would ridicule him, and when they got to Sokoto, he turned Sokoto into another Mecca.”

Sowore maintained that the government would eventually reverse Kanu’s sentence.

“Very soon you will see that, on their own, they would reverse the fundamental mistake they have made regarding Kanu,”
he said.

The activist further claimed he had long foreseen the outcome: “I predicted that they would send him to prison, and I predicted that it would be the mistake of their lives.”

The former Presidential candidate also took a swipe at the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho.

“I want his family members to give me the right to admit people to see him, so that I would tell you the day the judge who sentenced him would go to Sokoto to beg, like Fela was begged, if he has not done that already,”
Sowore said.

He mocked the rush of people seeking to visit the IPOB leader: “The people we asked to protest to prevent Kanu from going to jail are all rushing to Sokoto.”

Sowore blasted federal authorities for allegedly mismanaging the case.

“They don’t have sense or people who can reason in government. Look at where we are, you jailed Kanu and he’s now a celebrity in prison,”
he stated.

The activist insisted that the treatment meted out to the IPOB leader had only elevated his status among supporters.

What Abia Governor, Alex Otti Discussed With Nnamdi Kanu At Sokoto Prison

Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor, has asked the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to stay calm and steadfast as he continues efforts to secure his release.

It was gathered that Otti assured Nnamdi Kanu during a visit to the IPOB leader at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

This was disclosed on Sunday night in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Otti, who was accompanied by Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu; and senior officials of the Sokoto State government, told Nnamdi Kanu that the processes he initiated more than two years ago toward resolving the issue had been “heightened despite recent developments.”

The governor encouraged Kanu to “remain calm but strong,” assuring him that the matter “will be resolved administratively” and that he would eventually regain his freedom.

He also expressed satisfaction that the Sultan of Sokoto shared his stance on the need for Kanu’s release and the broader de-escalation of regional tensions.

Responding, Kanu, who was said to be in high spirits during the visit, reportedly expressed gratitude to Otti for the gesture.

He told the governor that his primary interest was good governance and any effort that would improve the well-being of the people.

He also prayed for God’s guidance for Otti and his team as they continue to serve the state.

The Abia government noted that Kanu was “all smiles” during the meeting and appreciative of the renewed efforts to address his situation.

Recall that following Kanu’s sentencing to life imprisonment, Governor Otti had disclosed that efforts to free the IPOB leader were already underway, stressing that a release framework had been quietly activated “during the trial.”

Kanu was imprisoned after being found guilty of terrorism related crimes.

Abia Governor, Alex Otti Visits Nnamdi Kanu In Sokoto Prison

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Sunday paid a visit to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and Prince Emmanuel Kanu disclosed the development in separate posts on their Facebook pages.

Ejimakor, in his post, thanked the governor “for fulfilling the promise you made to me to visit your brother, MAZI NNAMDI KANU. You’re a man of your words and gutsy to boot.

“May God bless you. And may your august visit to Sokoto today be the first step to ending this undeserved ordeal, sooner than later.”

On his part, Emmanuel Kanu wrote, “Governor Alex Otti and the people of Sokoto have made a unified statement by visiting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Recall that upon Kanu’s sentencing to life imprisonment, Governor Otti had said plans were in motion to secure the release of the IPOB leader from prison.

Otti said he had already activated a strategy to secure Kanu’s final freedom, which, according to him, he had earlier initiated during Kanu’s trial.

Show Mercy, Grant Nnamdi Kanu Presidential Pardon — Nigerians In Germany Beg Tinubu

Ndi Igbo in Germany and Nigerians in the diaspora have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to show compassion by granting a presidential pardon to the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The appeal was made in a communiqué on Friday jointly signed by Benjamin Chinaka, National Coordinator, and Chinasa Ezeji, Secretary General.

The plea followed an emergency meeting of the association held on November 21, 2025, in Frankfurt, Germany, where members expressed deep concern over the reported life sentence handed down to Kanu by a Nigerian court.

The group warned that the judgment could deepen ethnic tensions and worsen the nation’s fragile political climate.

“Nigeria is currently grappling with serious security and socio-political challenges. At such a delicate time, this judgment may further widen divisions among ethnic groups and undermine democratic cohesion,”
the statement read.

“We respectfully appeal to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to exercise his constitutional prerogative of mercy and grant a presidential pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

NIG noted that many of Kanu’s long-standing grievances reflect the frustrations of ordinary Nigerians, particularly in the South-East, who feel economically disadvantaged, politically marginalized, and insecure within the current national structure.

The group urged President Tinubu to “take a magnanimous decision in the interest of national unity, peace, and stability,” adding that releasing Kanu could be a pivotal step toward rebuilding trust in the Nigerian project.

The appeal comes amid growing domestic and international calls for a reconciliatory approach in addressing separatist agitations and regional discontent in South-East Nigeria.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, had convicted Kanu and sentenced him to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offenses, after which he was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Facility.

Heavy Security At Sokoto Prison Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Arrival

Security measures have been significantly reinforced at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following the transfer of Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, to the facility.

Kanu was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja after being convicted on terrorism and related charges.

In his ruling, Justice James Omotosho ordered that Kanu be taken to a “protective prison,” noting that the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja was unsuitable due to past prison breaks and associated security risks.

On Friday, Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, alleged that his client had been moved to Sokoto.

Speaking with Saturday Punch in Abuja, he said the transfer placed Kanu far from his legal team, family, and supporters, and urged Ndigbo to remain calm.

Although officials of the Sokoto Custodial Centre declined to confirm his arrival, Saturday Punch observed unusual security activity around the facility.

Armed personnel were stationed at strategic points within and outside the prison, while a truckload of soldiers drove into the premises—an uncommon development, according to nearby residents.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We saw soldiers entering in trucks this evening. The security here has never been this tight.”

Nnamdi Kanu Has Been Secretly Transferred To Sokoto Prison – Sowore Reveals

Nigerian human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has alleged that Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has been moved to a correctional facility in Sokoto State.

626Blaze reported that Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS since 2021, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of terrorism-related charges.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Sowore alleged that the IPOB leader was secretly moved from the DSS custody to Sokoto prison.

He wrote, “The Tinubu Regime Has Secretly Transferred Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto Prison

“Yes, they have already planned it. Their intention since yesterday was to move Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to a notorious prison based in the northern parts, where his safety cannot be guaranteed. I can confirm now that he’s already in Sokoto prison.

“They openly said he would “become a king” if taken to Kuje correctional center in Abuja, because according to them, “Igbo people” and his supporters would turn Kuje into a place of pilgrimage.

“That is why they are desperate to keep him far away, isolated, and vulnerable.
“It is also why they activated their cronies to start selling the illusion of “renewed hope” for MNK, a psychological tactic to keep the public calm while they execute their darkest agenda. Their plan is simple it is to keep your hopes alive just long enough for him to die in custody.

“They have no intention of releasing him, not even for political calculations or electoral convenience.

“I have said it before without fear, MNK’s greatest enemies are the politicians from his own region. They fear his influence, they fear his connection to the people, and they want him silenced permanently. This is why they fought tooth and nail to frustrate our #FreeNnamdiKanuNOW protest”.
